This book was released on 2018-03-12 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Zealand and Its Colonization, Vol. 1 Missionary but the pioneer of the destruction of its heathen people? Is a problem still waiting its solution in New Zealand. On what principle, with reference to native rights, have these Islands been erected into a British Colony? And what are the obligations contracted by the Crown of England in subjecting them to British rule? To what extent have the native race adopted the habits and usages of civilized life? And what pro gress has been made by them in industrial pur suits? What is the prospect of their permanent preservation? And what means have been taken for saving them from that process of exter mination under which uncivilized tribes have too commonly disappeared when brought into contact with civilized men? To these, and questions such as these, the following pages will be found to contain a faithful answer. Contemporary events, however, are seldom rightly discerned or fully appreciated, even' by their principal actors; but when the subject shall have become a matter of History, the Colonization of these Islands and the commingling of the Races will be read with all the interest of romance. Th_ey led the Baron to enter tain the hope Of acquiring extensive territories and rights Of chieftainship in New Zealand; and Mr. Kendal undertook to act as his agent for that purpose in the islands. Mr. Kendal received the sum Of seven hundred pounds from Baron de Thierry as the intended purchase-money Of lands; and, in 1822, effected a purchase, Of which I afterwards heard the particulars. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of New Zealand, Vol. 1 At one time it was hoped that several persons of great ability and high character, who had amassed much recorded information and had lived long in New Zealand, would combine the results and give them to the world. But that hope has vanished. I learned from one of them, who went to New Zealand in 1839, and lives there now, that on the occasion of a visit to Europe he abandoned the idea of publication, and destroyed his manuscripts. The failure of that project, and encouragement from those concerned in it, embolden me to present the following narrative compiled with a diligent endeavour to test every statement by reference to the most authentic sources of information. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Zealand and Its Colonization, Vol. 1 From a variety of causes, the experiment of founding a Colony in the Islands of New Zealand has, from the outset, been regarded with unusual interest. What are the advantages offered by New Zealand as a field of British Colonization? What are the characteristic features and the comparative advantages of its several Provinces? What has experience proved to be the sanative value of its climate? What has been the progress of the Colony in agriculture, commerce, population, and wealth? and What is the nature of its Constitution, government, and laws? are questions of interest to all who may be seeking for themselves a home among the Islands of the South. But there are questions of yet deeper and wider interest connected with the Colonization of these Islands. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Six Colonies of New Zealand Since the termination of the ten nights' debates on New Zealand in the House of Commons in 18415, and the cessation of the native war which ensued soon afterwards, the public mind in England seems to have forgotten the colony altogether. Any interest which is taken in it seems limited to the movements of the Canter bury Association, or to the Parliamentary Grant, which once a year is made in its behalf, when financial reformers express their astonishment that so flourishing 'a colony as it is represented to be should require such large amounts of British money for its support. Book The Official Handbook of New Zealand

Download or read book The Official Handbook of New Zealand written by Julius Vogel and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-26 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Official Handbook of New Zealand: A Collection of Papers by Experienced Colonists on the Colony as a Whole, and on the Several Provinces The rapid sale which the First Edition of the "Official Handbook of New Zealand" baa met with, has occasioned an unexpectedly early demand for a New Edition. The materials for bringing the information contained in the publication down to the latest period are not procurable in England, and the question had to be considered whether to allow the book lo go out of print, or to publish a second edition with only such additional information as could be obtained without sending to the Colony. Thu Editor, who is on a visit to England, decided to adopt the latter course; and it becomes his duty to explain that the latest information is not so complete as he would have desired. It has been gleaned from different sources, and so far as it goes is to be relied on. As It is not sufficient to be made applicable to all portions of the book, and as it would embarrass the reader to leave him in uncertainty as to the dates to which the various particulars extend, it has been thought better to append the additional information to this introduction, leaving the bulk of the book as before, excepting that the Official Directory has been corrected as far as possible. In the absence of a copy of the Census of 1874, the particulars of that Census, procured from fragmentary sources, are produced at less length than might otherwise be desirable. As the paper on the Public Works Department could not be subjected to official revision, it has been thought better to leave it as it originally appeared. It is to be regretted that official materials are not to hand in England by tho aid of which u particularized account could be given of the very great progress which the Railways and other public works have made since tho paper was written. As tho best substitute for an official statement, an article from the New Zealand Times of March 11th, describing the operations of the Public Works Department to the end of 1874, is appended. The following extract from a letter dated June 8th, 1875, written by the Hon. E. Richardson, tho Minster for Public Works in New Zealand, briefly describes the then condition of the principal railways: - "The line from Auckland to Mercer, forty-six miles, is open; also that from Invercargill to Mutaura, forty miles; also Christchurch to Rangitata, seventy miles; seventeen miles of the Win ton line nearly ready; Dunedin to Clutha, fifty-two miles, next month. Book Historical Records of New Zealand Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Historical Records of New Zealand Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Robert McNab and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-20 with total page 800 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Records of New Zealand, Vol. 1 The adoption of this course serves a double purpose. In the first place, it enhances the value of the History, for it enables the reader to turn at any point from the narrative of the writer to the fuller information which the reports and despatches supply. The advantage gained by this treatment of the official papers is obvious. N O matter how faithfully a writer of history may perform his task, he cannot cover all the ground no matter how acutely he may criticize the actors who take. Part in the scenes he describes, he cannot exhibit them in so clear a light as they are shown in their own writings. Thus the publication of the Records may be regarded as desirable from the historical point of view. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The New Zealand Colony

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Zealand Colony: Its Geography and History Until very recently it was customary to regard the colony Of New Zealand as more or less a part of the continent of Australia. The history Of New Zealand has certainly been connected with that of the neighbouring continent; their exports to the British Isles are much of the same character 5 and, roughly speaking, New Zealand and Australia lie at the same distance from the Mother Country. Confusion has also been caused by the convenient term Australasia, under which heading New Zealand, and many Of the South Sea Islands, have been included with Australia in works on geo graphy. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Edward Gibbon Wakefield: The Colonization of South Australia and New Zealand Amonc all the men celebrated in this series of biographies as 'builders of Greater Britain, ' Edward Gibbon Wakefield, inferior to none in genius and achievement, is perhaps the only one whose inclusion could excite inquiry or surprise. Not that his claims have at any time been weighed and found wanting, but that their existence is unknown to the multitude. By the mass of his countrymen at home he is chiefly remembered by the one incident in his career which he would have wished to be forgotten. The historians of the colonies he founded in general pass him over with slight notice, some omitting his very name. Download or read book Ghosts of Gondwana written by George Gibbs and published by . This book was released on 2016-10 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever wondered why New Zealand's plants and animals are so different from those in other countries? Why kakapo is the only parrot in the world that cannot fly, or why the kiwi lives here and nowhere else? New Zealand is an extraordinary place, unique on earth, and the remarkable story of how and why life evolved here is the subject of Ghosts of Gondwana. The challenge of explaining New Zealand's natural origins is picked up in this fully revised edition of the popular award-winning book. It presents the latest scientific research in highly readable form, highlighting studies that reveal the deep historical background of our landscapes, fauna and flora - from ancient frogs and moa to delicate insects and the magnificent southern beech forests. It introduces the latest discoveries and resolves past issues like the 'Oligocene drowning' hypothesis. Exciting fossil discoveries are revealed and new scientific technologies and approaches to the discipline of historical biogeography are discussed - approaches that range from undersea geology to molecular clocks - and it inevitably draws attention to the debates and conflicts that distinguish different schools of opinion in this holistic branch of theoretical science. This revision incorporates the results of 10 years of intensive scientific research and includes four entirely new chapters to: focus on 'yesterday's maps' to draw attention to the ephemeral islands in our history that have possibly acted as stepping stones for terrestrial animals and plants but today have sunk into the sea; incorporate the author's own special interest in an ancient group of 'jaw-moths', unknown and unnoticed by most people but with a strong message that New Zealand is part of the world when it comes to explaining where our fauna have come from; present recent research findings on our huge flightless birds, the ratites; and include New Zealand's terrestrial molluscs into the story. Ghosts of Gondwana identifies New Zealand as one of the most challenging places on earth to explain, but it's readable, engaging style and revised illustrations render this often-controversial discipline of science into a format that is accessible to any reader with an interest in natural history and the unique environment of New Zealand.
