Book excerpt: This view of a life-altering moment in our history—captured from one photographer’s Brooklyn rooftop—is a testament to human hope and resilience, and what we’ve learned about living in community. The roof of a New York apartment building, like some New York neighbors, can be elusive—you could live there for years and never see it. The unique constraints of 2020’s quarantine drove photographer and Brooklyn transplant Josh Katz up to his Bushwick rooftop and introduced him to both. What he discovered there astonished him. Families, lovers, dogs, meditators, artists, exercise fanatics, daredevils, drinkers, dancers—in this strange time the world below had found a way to continue ticking on up above, subject to new patterns and distances. And then, there were the pigeon fanciers, who had been up there for decades, watching the neighborhood change around them. Josh reached for his camera. The project grew from a man’s attempt to cope with his own isolation to a tender portrait of his community—captured entirely from his own roof—and a resonant chronicle of how some of us found new hope and space in a life-altering year. Characters as heartfelt as any in the now-classic Humans of New York accompany Josh’s keen observations on urban space, human interaction, and new ways of city living we can bring down from the roof to apply in a post-quarantine world.

Book excerpt: When NYC emerged as a pandemic hotbed, rooftops became our only respite from cramped apartments; our only escape into the outside world. Since the beginning of quarantine, I have spent hundreds of hours photographing the rise of roof culture from my rooftop in Bushwick, Brooklyn. This is a photo book about New Yorkers persevering through quarantine, photographed from my Brooklyn rooftop. 100% of profits go to Doctors Without Borders (MSF).

Book excerpt: A collection of images taken in a very quiet time in NYC. THE LACK OF SUBJECT IS THE SUBJECTEarly March was the beginning of a long mandated quarantine to combat a previously unseen threat in the form of COVID-19. Institutions and businesses alike began to leave behind the places of work and worship and remain at home to avoid the disease and "flatten the curve". The images contained in this book are from that time. Lone walks by myself through empty and quiet city streets of New York. The financial district, governement center, entertainment hubs, transit, all gone quiet while scientists tried to figure it out and hospitals tried to save everyone. Streets empty like movie sets, displayed the dearth of people in a city known for being alive with energy, excitement and people. Lots of people. What the city will look like when our smartest minds solve this is anyones guess but these images are a record of Quiet in NYC.

Book excerpt: This riveting story of the typhus and cholera epidemics that swept through New York City in 1892 has been updated with a new preface that tackles the COVID-19 pandemic. Winner, 2003 Arthur J. Viseltear Prize for Outstanding Book in the History of Public Health, American Public Health Association In Quarantine! Howard Markel traces the course of the typhus and cholera epidemics that swept through New York City in 1892. The story is told from the point of view of those involved—the public health doctors who diagnosed and treated the victims, the newspaper reporters who covered the stories, the government officials who established and enforced policy, and, most importantly, the immigrants themselves. Drawing on rarely cited stories from the Yiddish American press, immigrant diaries and letters, and official accounts, Markel follows the immigrants on their journey from a squalid and precarious existence in Russia's Pale of Settlement, to their passage in steerage, to New York's Lower East Side, to the city's quarantine islands. This updated edition features a new preface from the author that reflects on the themes of the book in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. At a time of renewed anti-immigrant sentiment and newly emerging infectious diseases, Quarantine! provides a historical context for considering some of the significant problems that face American society today.

Book excerpt: Over five centuries, a global archipelago of quarantine stations came to connect the world's oceans from the Mediterranean to the South Pacific, from Atlantic coasts to the Red Sea. In the process, great new carceral structures materialised, many surviving into the present as magnificent ruins or as 5 star hotels with a dark tourism edge. This book offers new histories and geographies of quarantine islands and isolation hospitals across the world, bringing their local and global pasts and present into view. An international cast of leading experts examine the enduring historical problems of migration and mobility, segregation, prevention and protection by states with different interests in freedoms, health and commerce. With case studies from as far afield as the Red Sea, Hong Kong and New Zealand, and from the early modern period forward, this book provides an invaluable insight into the history of quarantine.

On June 11, in response to the global spread of a new strain of influenza, the level of influenza pandemic alert was raised to indicate the start of an actual pandemic. Questions relating to employment is a significant issue raised by a pandemic since if individuals fear losing their employment, compliance with public health measures such as isolation or quarantine may suffer. Although the common law doctrine of employment-at-will (EAW) is applicable, there is an exception for public policy reasons. This report examines the EAW doctrine, application of the public policy exception in the case of a potential influenza pandemic, the Family and Med. Leave Act, and application of the non-discrim. mandates of the Americans with Disability Act. Illustrations.
