  • Publisher : American Mathematical Soc.

Download or read book Linear Algebra I written by Frederick P. Greenleaf and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2019-01-30 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first of two volumes on linear algebra for graduate students in mathematics, the sciences, and economics, who have: a prior undergraduate course in the subject; a basic understanding of matrix algebra; and some proficiency with mathematical proofs. Proofs are emphasized and the overall objective is to understand the structure of linear operators as the key to solving problems in which they arise. This first volume re-examines basic notions of linear algebra: vector spaces, linear operators, duality, determinants, diagonalization, and inner product spaces, giving an overview of linear algebra with sufficient mathematical precision for advanced use of the subject. This book provides a nice and varied selection of exercises; examples are well-crafted and provide a clear understanding of the methods involved. New notions are well motivated and interdisciplinary connections are often provided, to give a more intuitive and complete vision of linear algebra. Computational aspects are fully covered, but the study of linear operators remains the focus of study in this book.

Download or read book Educational Algebra written by Eugenio Filloy and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-10-12 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book takes a theoretical perspective on the study of school algebra, in which both semiotics and history occur. The Methodological design allows for the interpretation of specific phenomena and the inclusion of evidence not addressed in more general treatments. The book gives priority to "meaning in use" over "formal meaning". These approaches and others of similar nature lead to a focus on competence rather than a user’s activity with mathematical language.

Book The Math Myth

  • Author : Andrew Hacker
  • Publisher : New Press, The
  • Release : 2010-05-25
  • ISBN : 1620970694

Download or read book The Math Myth written by Andrew Hacker and published by New Press, The. This book was released on 2010-05-25 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New York Times–bestselling author looks at mathematics education in America—when it’s worthwhile, and when it’s not. Why do we inflict a full menu of mathematics—algebra, geometry, trigonometry, even calculus—on all young Americans, regardless of their interests or aptitudes? While Andrew Hacker has been a professor of mathematics himself, and extols the glories of the subject, he also questions some widely held assumptions in this thought-provoking and practical-minded book. Does advanced math really broaden our minds? Is mastery of azimuths and asymptotes needed for success in most jobs? Should the entire Common Core syllabus be required of every student? Hacker worries that our nation’s current frenzied emphasis on STEM is diverting attention from other pursuits and even subverting the spirit of the country. Here, he shows how mandating math for everyone prevents other talents from being developed and acts as an irrational barrier to graduation and careers. He proposes alternatives, including teaching facility with figures, quantitative reasoning, and understanding statistics. Expanding upon the author’s viral New York Times op-ed, The Math Myth is sure to spark a heated and needed national conversation—not just about mathematics but about the kind of people and society we want to be. “Hacker’s accessible arguments offer plenty to think about and should serve as a clarion call to students, parents, and educators who decry the one-size-fits-all approach to schooling.” —Publishers Weekly, starred review

Book Everything You Need to Ace Pre Algebra and Algebra I in One Big Fat Notebook

This book was released on 2021-10-05 with total page 641 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pre-Algebra/Algebra 1 is the first real taste of high school math, and for most kids it's like, uh-oh, we're not in Kansas anymore! But help is here from the The Big Fat Notebooks, the series that has single-handedly changed the study guide landscape for middle and high school kids, roaring along with tremendous success and reaching millions and millions of students. In the invaluable Big Fat Notebook way--where critical ideas are broken down and clearly explained, diagrams and doodles illuminate key concepts and mnemonics provide valuable shortcuts, and strategic quizzes give the material another way to sink in--Pre-Algebra/Algebra 1 covers it all: the number system, ratios and proportions, introduction to equations, square roots and cube roots, to factoring polynomials and solving and graphing quadratic equations. It's important to note also that Pre-Algebra/Algebra 1 is the natural next book after Math, the bestselling Big Fat Notebook with TK copies in print. It not only picks up where Math leaves off, but Pre-Algebra/Algebra 1 is a subject that precocious eighth-graders take before entering high school, helping those students on their accelerated track.

Book The Algebra of Happiness

Download or read book The Algebra of Happiness written by Scott Galloway and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2019-05-14 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An unconventional book of wisdom and life advice from renowned business school professor and New York Times bestselling author of The Four Scott Galloway. Scott Galloway teaches brand strategy at NYU's Stern School of Business, but his most popular lectures deal with life strategy, not business. In the classroom, on his blog, and in YouTube videos garnering millions of views, he regularly offers hard-hitting answers to the big questions: What's the formula for a life well lived? How can you have a meaningful career, not just a lucrative one? Is work/life balance possible? What are the elements of a successful relationship? The Algebra of Happiness: Notes on the Pursuit of Success, Love, and Meaning draws on Professor Galloway's mix of anecdotes and no-BS insight to share hard-won wisdom about life's challenges, along with poignant personal stories. Whether it's advice on if you should drop out of school to be an entrepreneur (it might have worked for Steve Jobs, but you're probably not Steve Jobs), ideas on how to position yourself in a crowded job market (do something "boring" and move to a city; passion is for people who are already rich), discovering what the most important decision in your life is (it's not your job, your car, OR your zip code), or arguing that our relationships to others are ultimately all that matter, Galloway entertains, inspires, and provokes. Brash, funny, and surprisingly moving, The Algebra of Happiness represents a refreshing perspective on our need for both professional success and personal fulfillment, and makes the perfect gift for any new graduate, or for anyone who feels adrift.

Download or read book Algebra written by William A. Adkins and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is designed as a text for a first-year graduate algebra course. As necessary background we would consider a good undergraduate linear algebra course. An undergraduate abstract algebra course, while helpful, is not necessary (and so an adventurous undergraduate might learn some algebra from this book). Perhaps the principal distinguishing feature of this book is its point of view. Many textbooks tend to be encyclopedic. We have tried to write one that is thematic, with a consistent point of view. The theme, as indicated by our title, is that of modules (though our intention has not been to write a textbook purely on module theory). We begin with some group and ring theory, to set the stage, and then, in the heart of the book, develop module theory. Having developed it, we present some of its applications: canonical forms for linear transformations, bilinear forms, and group representations. Why modules? The answer is that they are a basic unifying concept in mathematics. The reader is probably already familiar with the basic role that vector spaces play in mathematics, and modules are a generaliza tion of vector spaces. (To be precise, modules are to rings as vector spaces are to fields.
