Book excerpt: This book presents the proceedings of the "Biwako Symposium on Glycolipids" which was held in Otsu, Japan, September 17-19, 1981, just before the 6th International Symposium on Glycoconjugates in Tokyo. The meeting was convened by Dr. Taro Hori in commemoration of the discovery of hematoside and globoside by Dr. Tamio Yamakawa in 1951. Glycolipid research beginning from the age of Thudichum, father of neurochemistry, developed rapidly in the third quarter of this century and is now extensive and interdisciplinary, having progressed to the isolation and chemical characterization of a great number of glycolipids, studies on catabolism and synthesis, biochemical elucidation of inherited sphingolipidoses, immunochemical characterization of various antigens, studies on membrane phenomena and cancer problems, and so on. These developments have been stimulated by both methodological advances (TLC, GLC, MS, NMR and cell cultures) and mutual interactions with many other fields of life science. Although glycolipids are relatively minor components of cells and tissues, and their functions depend essentially on their carbohydrate moiety like other glycoconjugates, they are unique in biochemistry and biophysics by way of their amphipatic properties. The purpose of the meeting was to bring together scientists involved in a wide variety of aspects of glycolipid biochemistry, and to promote further research. The proceedings also includes the very fruitful discussions at the meeting as well as some papers which were not presented at the meeting but dedicated to Dr. T. Yamakawa on the 60th anniversary of his birth. Regretfully, we cannot communicate the pleasant atmosphere of the "get-together" on the same boat on Lake Biwako, and other informal events during the convention.

C. , Canada on July 6-10, 1983. The symposium was organized ao a satellite to the ninth meeting of the International Society for Neurochemistry, held immediately afterward in Vancouver City, B. C. Close to 50 speakers from 9 countries presented papers on a wide range of topics on the ganglioside theme. These encompassed the many aspects of basic research that have evolved over the past half-century, as well as some newer topics relating to the biomedical potential of gangliosides as therapeutic agents. One of the purposes of the meeting was to encourage dialogue between investigators in these seemingly diverse areas in the hope that each would come away with fresh perspective toward his own work. Judging from the many spirited, informed discussions that took place throughout the four day meeting, this goal was achieved. The charm and beauty of Vancouver Island undoubtedly contributed to the congenial atmosphere which quickly developed among the 120 or so participants. Drawn from 13 countries of Europe (East and West), America (North and South), Asia and the Middle East, this gathering reflected the broad geographical scale on which ganglioside research is now conducted. That this field is still in its "logarithmic" stage of growth is indicated by the increasing number of citations appearing each year in the various abstracts (e. g. fig. next page).

Book excerpt: We are pleased to present to our readers the Proceedings of the Fifth International Workshop on Phosphate and Other Minerals which was held in New York City, New York, U.S.A during September 23-27,1981. It was hosted by Joseph M. Letteri, M.D., Professor of Medicine at the State University of New York at Stonybrook School of Medicine, and Chief, Division of Nephrology, Nassau County Medical Center. As in the previous Workshops, this meeting provided an oppor tunity for interested scientists from interrelated fields, including nephrology, endocrinology, physiology, biochemistry and nutrition, to get together and discuss the recent advances in the field of phosphate and mineral metabolism. There were 29 invited presenta tions by leading scientists and 40 oral and 90 poster presentations selected from over 250 abstracts submitted to the Organizing Committee. The Workshop was attended by 250 scientists from 14 countries including Austria, Australia, Canada, Denmark, England, France, Germany, Holland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Sweden, and the United States of America. The Sixth International Workshop on Phosphate and Other Minerals will be held during June 24-26, 1983 in Verona, Italy. It will be hosted by Professor Giuseppe Maschio, Director, Division of Nephrology, Istituti Ospitalieri, Verona, Italy. The theme of this coming Workshop will continue to focus on the pathophysiology of phosphate homeostasis and the metabolism of other minerals.
