Book Synthesis of Fused Ring Thiophenes for the Use in Electronic Devices

Download or read book Synthesis of Fused Ring Thiophenes for the Use in Electronic Devices written by Sarah M. Peak and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent advances in synthetic and materials chemistry have led to the incorporation of organic conducting materials into various next generation electronic devices. In many applications, organics can act as the semiconducting material in place of more traditional components. Real-world, molecular based devices which incorporate organic semiconductors include Organic Light Emitting Diodes (OLEDs), Organic Photovolatic (OPV) cells, and Field-Effect Transistors (FETs). Organic electronic materials possess several advantages over traditional semiconductors (e.g., silcon), including lower cost of production, enhanced processibility, and the ability to function on flexible substrates (so called "plastic electronics"). Aromatic heterocycles, in particular thiophenes, represent an intriguing class of organic semiconductors due to their synthetic versatility and environmental stability. However, continued exploration into the formation of these novel materials is required before thiophene-based electronics become commercially feasible. This paper will focus on the role of thiophenes in electronic devices, previous research on thiophene-based electronic materials, and several synthetic pathways for the formation of thiophene derivatives. These transformations will start with a 2,5-disubstituted thiophene, 2,5-dimethylthiophene. Formation of various 5,5 and 5,6-fused thiophene rings was accomplished by first functionalizing at the 3- and 4- position, followed by ring closure with hydrazine hydrate, Lawesson's Reagent, and various fused ring thiophene derivatives incorporating a pyridazene, a thiophene, and reduced pyrrole into this 2,5-dimethylthiophene substrate. The overall goal of this research is to increase solubility, improve handling, increase conductivity, and have good synthetic versatility of these conducting materials so that each thiophene derivative has practical applications in next generation electronic devices.

Book excerpt: The series Topics in Current Chemistry Collections presents critical reviews from the journal Topics in Current Chemistry organized in topical volumes. The scope of coverage is all areas of chemical science including the interfaces with related disciplines such as biology, medicine and materials science. The goal of each thematic volume is to give the non-specialist reader, whether in academia or industry, a comprehensive insight into an area where new research is emerging which is of interest to a larger scientific audience. Each review within the volume critically surveys one aspect of that topic and places it within the context of the volume as a whole. The most significant developments of the last 5 to 10 years are presented using selected examples to illustrate the principles discussed. The coverage is not intended to be an exhaustive summary of the field or include large quantities of data, but should rather be conceptual, concentrating on the methodological thinking that will allow the non-specialist reader to understand the information presented. Contributions also offer an outlook on potential future developments in the field.

Book Doping Of Semiconducting Polymers For Electronic Applications

Download or read book Doping Of Semiconducting Polymers For Electronic Applications written by David Jones and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One branch of modern electronics requires avoiding the high processing costs associated with inorganic semiconductors in order to create novel low-cost, mechanically flexible, and low-profile devices for the next generation of consumer devices. Organic semiconductors can be doped to improve their charge mobility and carrier density towards creating better polymer-based photovoltaics, organic thin-film transistors, and organic light-emitting diodes. Dopants offer one route to improved device performance, but the specific interactions between the dopant molecule and the semiconductor must be designed for the desired function. This work explores the effects of sulfonic acid groups on the behavior of the common organic semiconductor poly-(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT). P3HT was chosen for its ubiquitous use in photovoltaics and other organic electronic applications. The doping of P3HT by sulfonic acid-containing moieties was explored initially as a method to replace the poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) electron blocking later at the photovoltaic transparent indium tin oxide electrode. Measurements of doped thiophene-based polymers were conducted in organic thin-film transistor geometries to measure the charge carrier densities. Additionally, spectroscopic evidence of doping complemented the transistor and photovoltaic studies. This work explores the extent to which P3HT can be doped at the highest density and how it may be used in modern organic electronics such as transistors, photovoltaics, and light-emitting diodes.

Book Synthesis of Functionalized Thiophene Based Materials

Download or read book Synthesis of Functionalized Thiophene Based Materials written by Dushanthi Shamila Dissanayake and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Functionalized thiophene based materials are promising candidates in many organic electronic applications such as organic field effect transistors, photovoltaic devices, organic light emitting diodes and sensors. Low temperature deposition and solution processing make these materials particularly interesting as their fabrication processes are much less complex than conventional silicon technology. Furthermore, the mechanical flexibility of organic materials makes them well-suited for plastic substrates in light weight and flexible products. Incorporation of different functional moieties can alter the optoelectronic properties of these materials. Attaching stimuli responsive compounds make these materials responsive towards the particular stimulus, and electron donating and withdrawing moieties can be used to tune the HOMO and LUMO energy levels. Spiropyrans are photochromic compounds which shows large structural variation upon absorption of light, and developing new synthetic methodologies to incorporate these units into thiophene based materials via a conjugated pathway is crucial in order to study the effect of photochromism on optoelectronic properties of a conjugated material. Functionalization of thiophene based materials with alkoxy substituents raise the HOMO level of the materials and thus lower the band gap. Application of alkoxy substituted polythiophene on organic electronic devices can demonstrate how charge transportation of the material is affected by the substituent. Chapter 1 discusses the thiophene based conjugated materials and their electronic properties including band structure, conductivity and charge transport mechanism. The operation mechanism of organic field effect transistors and effect of functionalization of thiophene based materials with photochromic spiropyrans and alkoxy groups with respect to organic electronic applications is discussed. Chapter 2 demonstrates development of synthetic methodologies to incorporate photochromic spiropyran as a backbone unit into thiophene based polymers via a conjugated pathway. Chapter 3 illustrates a new synthetic method to incorporate photochromic spiropyran substituents as pendent groups to thiophene repeat units through a conjugated pathway. Chapter 4 discusses the synthesis of triethylene glycol monomethyl ether substituted polythiophene, optoelectronic properties and the charge carrier mobility with field-effect transistors and in Schottky diode. It also describes the applicability of doped polymer as an alternative to commercially available PEDOT: PSS.
