Book Ludwig Mies Van Der Rohe

Download or read book Ludwig Mies Van Der Rohe written by Laura Pavia and published by Ilios Editore. This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mies van Der Rohe building is part of the late production of the German architect but is the one that encloses all the essence of his research. A building where the architectural type of "museum" perfectly fits the type of the "temple." The result is a quiet sacred place able to express itself beyond time. The most interesting thing, in fact, is that this is the Mies' building around which most things have happened. From the IBA building by James Stirling to the monumental Potsdammer Platz site all things have changed around it. But, if you visit now Berlin, you will find that the Neue Nationalgalerie site keeps his holyness alive. This book show a clean architectural and proportional graphic analysis of the museum through a huge number of sketches, 3d prospective and axonometric views and a complete reconstruction of the process that lead Mies to build this wonderful building.

This book was released on 2021-08-31 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Neue Nationalgalerie on the Berlin Kulturforum is an architectural icon as well as the crowning conclusion of architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe's life work. An outstandingly successful and sensitive refurbishment and modernization project was carried out for the building's most significant overhaul since its opening in 1968. It complies with the requirements of a contemporary museum exhibition facility, as well as monument-preservation guidelines. David Chipperfield Architects developed the renovation concept under the motto of "As much Mies as possible." This publication provides deep insight into the planning, execution, monument preservation and restoration from the perspective of those involved. The exemplary handling of the historical fabric is presented in design documents and numerous large-format photographs that impressively illustrate the design stage, the construction site and the results of the refurbishment. With articles by David Chipperfield, Bernhard Furrer, Gunny Harboe, Joachim Jaeger, Dirk Lohan, Fritz Neumeyer, Alexander Schwarz, Gerrit Wegener, and some 30 project managers

Book The Berlin Masterpieces in America

Download or read book The Berlin Masterpieces in America written by Peter J. Bell and published by Giles. This book was released on 2020-07-21 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new volume tells the story of some of the paintings rescued by the the Monuments, Fine Arts and Archives (MFAA) organization, the so-called "Monuments Men." In December 1945, 202 paintings, found in German salt mines 2,100 feet underground, where they had been hidden to escape the allied bombing of Berlin, were brought to the United States "for safe keeping" by the Department of the Army. They were exhibited in 1948 at the National Gallery of Art, Washington DC, before some of them were sent on a whistle-stop tour of 13 US cities, despite furious opposition from museum directors, Gallery staff, the public, government officials, and a resolution from 98 leading art authorities demanding the immediate return of the works to Germany. All the paintings, examples of Flemish, Dutch, German, French, English, and Italian Schools, were from museums in Berlin, and had been found in April 1945, along with 100 tons of Reichsbank gold, by the special team of art historians and experts, seconded in the US army, and charged with locating and restituting works of art looted by the Nazis. This book is the first to consider the paintings themselves; it features 22 artworks that were in the original NGA exhibition, including four paintings on loan from Berlin, augmented by others from Cincinnati Art Museum, National Gallery of Art, Washington, The Getty Museum, Miami University (Oxford, OH), and the Taft Museum.

Book Fighting for Visibility

Download or read book Fighting for Visibility written by Yvette Deseyve and published by . This book was released on 2019-10-14 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exactly 100 years ago, the first women were allowed to participate in regular art courses at the Berliner Kunstakademie. While such a late date is no cause for celebration, it nonetheless offers the opportunity to consider the works of these women painters and sculptors, who triumphed against adversity to break into the art world and succeeded in having their works included in the Nationalgalerie's collection. Among them are Sabine Lepsius's self-conscious self-portrait, Maria Slavona's impressionistic view of the houses of Montmartre, and Caroline Bardua's spectacular paintings. Even more than the painters, the sculptors encountered opposition to their artistic activities. The powerful works of the German-American sculptor Elisabeth Ney and the Berlin artists Kathe Kollwitz and Renee Sintenis gave the lie to such prejudices. Alongside these well-known names, the catalogue and exhibition also invites visitors to discover lesser known figures, some of whom are being shown in the Alte Nationalgalerie for the first time.

Book Neues Museum Berlin

Download or read book Neues Museum Berlin written by Julian Harrap and published by Walther Konig. This book was released on 2009 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, edited by David Chipperfield, documents his most important project to date: the Neues Museum, the centrepiece of the Berlin Museumsinsel. Here he connects the old and new in a completely novel way. As he says himself, he proceeded like a painter, who painstakingly considers every dab of paint. Photographs by Candida Höfer show the rooms after their completion and before they were furnished. As Höfer avoided using artificial light, the rooms are bathed in a soft natural light. These critical moments are perfectly reproduced in the book as matt colour plates. The photographer is inspired by the empty rooms and grandiose corridors of space to then dedicate her attention to the architects interventions. This artistic-photographic documentation is complemented by texts from wellknown architects, architectural historians, art historians and conservation architects. They highlight the fundamental principles of the project of conservation and complementation. Kenneth Frampton discusses the almost historical endeavour to restore such a building and responds to Chipperfields architectural interventions, purely abstract forms that avoid any trace of kitsch. Joseph Rykwert describes the fragmented history of which this building is evidence, thanks to its many layers. An interview with David Chipperfield byWolfgangWolters imparts insights into the problems and questions that the restoration posed, and in his contribution, ThomasWeski takes a closer look at Candida Höfers photography. In addition, a chronology offers an overview of the history of the building, the request for proposals for its reconstruction and the restoration itself.
