Whether issuing a proclamation to declare New Mexico a sanctuary state or commuting the death sentences of proven murderers, Governor Anaya took controversy head on, even if it meant circumventing legislation in place or taking a hit on the public opinion polls. The brilliance and potential that burned so brightly in the early states of a promising career, however, ultimately faded and fizzled. Anaya's political actions will be used as a lens to analyze why a politician and man who enjoyed such overwhelming support in the election and early days of his administration fell to the depths of the political abyss and garnered an approval rating approaching single digits. The answer to this question can be found in the relationship between Anaya's own personal characteristics as a politician and the realities of New Mexico's political landscape, both historically and at the time he was governor.
