It consists of a bundle of 15,000 scintillating fibers each of 100[micro]m diameter. The fibers are oriented parallel to the beam and gave a measuring resolution of 38[micro]m transverse to the beam. In this report the authors analyzed about 50,000 elastics as close as 3 mm from the beam. Simulated data runs show that the total cross section should be obtained to an accuracy of[+-]2%. The smallest t-bin used has a background subtraction of[approximately]20%, but for most of the t-bins the background is much smaller and the detection efficiency is over 95%. Very preliminary analysis gives a total cross section of[approximately]71 mb at[radical]s= 1.8 TeV using a luminosity-independent method. This is consistent with the earlier Fermilab E710 result which used a different kind of elastic detector. The rho-value analysis has not yet been completed. A personal interpretation (by Orear) of a slower rise in the total cross section is given at the end.

Book excerpt: The {bar p}p differential elastic scattering cross section was measured at √{bar s} = 1800 GeV, using an improved accelerator luminosity determination and CDF small angle data in the range of 0.05 ≤ t ≤ 0.2(GeV/c)2. By extrapolating the differential cross sections to t=0 and using the optical theorem we obtain a total cross section of [sigma]{sub tot}({bar p}p) = 72.0 {plus minus} 3.6 mb. This result is preliminary in the sense that we expect to further reduce the systematic error on the optical point. 9 refs., 8 figs.

The {mu}-plus-jets final state is analyzed in a data sample of 94 pb{sup -1} and a total of 14 events are selected with a background expectation of 11.7 {+-} 1.9 events. The measurement yields: {sigma}{sub p{bar p} {yields} t{bar t} + X} = 2.4{sub -3.5}{sup +4.2}(stat.){sub -2.6}{sup +2.5}(syst.) {+-} 0.3(lumi.) pb. The analysis, being part of a larger effort to re-observe the top quark in Tevatron Run II data and to measure the production cross section, is combined with results from all available analyses channels. The combined result yields: {sigma}{sub p{bar p}} {yields} t{bar t} + X = 8.1{sub -2.0}{sup +2.2}(stat.){sub -1.4}{sup +1.6}(syst.) {+-} 0.8(lumi.) pb.

This analysis uses 405 pb−1 of data collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. Fully hadronic t{bar t} decays with final states of six or more jets are separated from the multijet background using secondary vertex tagging and a neural network. The t{bar t} cross section is measured as?{sub t{bar t}} = 4.5{sub -1.9}{sup +2.0}(stat){sub -1.1}{sup +1.4}(syst) ± 0.3(lumi) pb for a top quark mass of m{sub t} = 175 GeV/c2.

The integrated luminosity of the data set is 140 pb{sup -1} and a total of four candidate events are seen, with an expected background of 2.61 events. The measured cross section of {sigma}{sub t{bar t}} = 11.1{sub -9.3}{sup +22.1}(stat.){sub -4.5}{sup +4.3}(sys.) pb is in agreement with a NNLO calculation of 6.77 pb.
