Book Cross Currents in Second Language Acquisition and Linguistic Theory

Download or read book Cross Currents in Second Language Acquisition and Linguistic Theory written by Thom Huebner and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1991-07-12 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The term “crosscurrent” is defined as “a current flowing counter to another.” This volume represents crosscurrents in second language acquisition and linguistic theory in several respects. First, although the main currents running between linguistics and second language acquisition have traditionally flowed from theory to application, equally important contributions can be made in the other direction as well. Second, although there is a strong tendency in the field of linguistics to see “theorists” working within formal models of syntax, SLA research can contribute to linguistic theory more broadly defined to include various functional as well as formal models of syntax, theories of phonology, variationist theories of sociolinguists, etc. These assumptions formed the basis for a conference held at Stanford University during the Linguistic Institute there in the summer of 1987. The conference was organized to update the relation between second language acquisition and linguistic theory. This book contains a selection of (mostly revised and updated) papers of this conference and two newly written papers.

Book Linguistic Choice Across Genres

Download or read book Linguistic Choice Across Genres written by Antonia Sánchez Macarro and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1998-01-01 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, based on revised papers originally delivered at the VII International Systemic Functional Workshop in Valencia in 1995, explores some of the choices open to speakers and writers for the expression of meaning in different socio-cultural contexts. Many of the papers draw their inspiration from models of language developed by Michael Halliday and in particular recent theories of variation in relation to texts and genres explored by Halliday and his followers. There is an emphasis on the interdependence and interaction of linguistic choices across sentence boundaries and speaking turns, and also a consistent focus across many papers on the importance of lexicogrammar in the construction of texts. Several papers examine the differences between native-speaker and non-native-speaker choices in speech and writing. The volume also contributes to our understanding of differences and similarities between spoken and written varieties of English and of the central significance of interpersonal functions in the communication of messages. By drawing on naturally-occurring data collected on a range of genres as diverse as philosophy articles, scientific research papers, emergency telephone calls, and casual conversation, contributors both refine descriptions of the relations between text and context and offer numerous new insights and analyses.

Book Sound Patterns in Second Language Acquisition

Download or read book Sound Patterns in Second Language Acquisition written by Allan James and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2019-11-18 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Language acquisition is a human endeavor par excellence. As children, all human beings learn to understand and speak at least one language: their mother tongue. It is a process that seems to take place without any obvious effort. Second language learning, particularly among adults, causes more difficulty. The purpose of this series is to compile a collection of high-quality monographs on language acquisition. The series serves the needs of everyone who wants to know more about the problem of language acquisition in general and/or about language acquisition in specific contexts.

Book Natural Language Processing and Computational Linguistics 2

Download or read book Natural Language Processing and Computational Linguistics 2 written by Mohamed Zakaria Kurdi and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2018-02-28 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Natural Language Processing (NLP) is a scientific discipline which is found at the intersection of fields such as Artificial Intelligence, Linguistics, and Cognitive Psychology. This book presents in four chapters the state of the art and fundamental concepts of key NLP areas. Are presented in the first chapter the fundamental concepts in lexical semantics, lexical databases, knowledge representation paradigms, and ontologies. The second chapter is about combinatorial and formal semantics. Discourse and text representation as well as automatic discourse segmentation and interpretation, and anaphora resolution are the subject of the third chapter. Finally, in the fourth chapter, I will cover some aspects of large scale applications of NLP such as software architecture and their relations to cognitive models of NLP as well as the evaluation paradigms of NLP software. Furthermore, I will present in this chapter the main NLP applications such as Machine Translation (MT), Information Retrieval (IR), as well as Big Data and Information Extraction such as event extraction, sentiment analysis and opinion mining.

Book What is the Matter with Communicative Competence

Download or read book What is the Matter with Communicative Competence written by Reinhold Peterwagner and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2005 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book integrates recent findings of linguistic research into ELT. Its aim is - to introduce (future) teachers to the complex concept of communicative competence - to critically analyse learners' teaching/learning deficiencies in the light of the requirements they are expected to meet at the school-leaving exams or at university-entry - to offer suggestions about how to remedy these shortcomings and also to provide teaching and testing materials.

Book Segmental Structure and Complex Segments

Download or read book Segmental Structure and Complex Segments written by Jeroen van de Weijer and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2015-08-17 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers a theory of phonological structure which pays particular attention to the representation of 'complex segments', such as affricates. The first two chapters are concerned with the primitives needed to express place of articulation in phonological segments. In chapters 3 and 4 the relevance of complex segments to phonological theory is discussed from a general perspective. Chapter 3 also provides a general formalisation of complexity in segmental phonology, namely as branching in the segmental structure. Chapter 5 is concerned with the structure of the other phonological dimension that is investigated, namely manner. The second part of the volume deals with specific studies of segmental complexity on the place and the manner dimension, respectively: chapter 6 is concerned with place complexity, and chapters 7-9 with manner complexity. Chapter 7 deals with affricates, chapter 8 with prenasalised stops and chapter 9 with /s/ plus stop clusters. Chapter 10, finally, discusses a category of segments which combine two root nodes under a single timing position, such as consonants with secondary articulation and short diphthongs.

Book Discourse Intonation in L2

Download or read book Discourse Intonation in L2 written by Dorothy M. Chun and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2002-04-08 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intonation, rhythm, and general “melody” of language are among the first aspects of speech that infants attend to and produce themselves. Yet, these same features are among the last to be mastered by adult L2 learners. Why is this, and how can L2 learners be helped? This book first presents the latest linguistic theories of intonation, in particular, how intonation functions in discourse not only to signal sentence types and attitudinal meanings but also to provide turn-taking and other conversational cues. The second part of the book examines the research in applied linguistics on the acquisition of L2 phonology and intonation. The third section offers practical applications of how to incorporate the teaching of intonation into L2 instruction, with a focus on using new speech technologies. The accompanying CD-ROM makes a unique addition in allowing for simultaneous audio playback and visual display of the pitch contours of utterances contained in the book. Users can start or stop the playback at any point in the utterance and can observe first-hand how such visual and audio representations could be useful for L2 learners.

Book Dependency and Non Linear Phonology

Download or read book Dependency and Non Linear Phonology written by Jacques Durand and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-03 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1986. The purpose of this collection of articles is to explore in depth the notational model dependency phonology, and also to offer rival, non-dependency-based accounts of aspects of suprasegmental and intrasegmental structure. Dependency and Non-Linear Phonology offers an introduction to dependency phonology that does not presuppose any knowledge of this framework and points out some of the major differences between dependency phonology and competing systems of representations. The book will also act as a guide to current debates in the field of ‘non-linear’ phonology.

  • Pages : 597 pages

Download or read book Error Analysis written by Bernd Spillner and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1991 with total page 597 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Errors are information. In contrastive linguistics, they are thought to be caused by unconscious transfer of mother tongue structures to the system of the target language and give information about both systems. In the interlanguage hypothesis of second language acquisition, errors are indicative of the different intermediate learning levels and are useful pedagogical feedback. In both cases error analysis is an essential methodological tool for diagnosis and evaluation of the language acquisition process. Errors, too, give information in psychoanalysis (e.g., the Freudian slip), in language universal research, and in other fields of linguistics, such as linguistic change. This bibliography is intended to stimulate study into cross-language, cross-discipline and cross-theoretical, as well as for language universal, use of the numerous, but sometimes hard to come by, error analysis studies. 5398 titles covering the period 1578 up to 1990 (with work in more than 144 languages and language families) are cited, cross-referenced, and described. The subject areas covered are numerous. For example: Theoretical Linguistics (Linguistic Typology, Cognitive Linguistics), Historical Linguistics (Language Change), Applied Linguistics (e.g. Speech Disorders), Translation, Mother Tongue Acquisition, Foreign Language Learning (Negative Transfer, Intralingual and Interlingual Errors), Psychoanalysis (Slips of the Tongue), Typography, Shorthand, Clinical Linguistics and Speech Pathology, Reading Research, Automatic Error Detection, Contact Linguistics (Code-switching, Interference), etc.
