Book Chalk Talks in Internal Medicine

Download or read book Chalk Talks in Internal Medicine written by Somnath Mookherjee and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-09-30 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides teaching scripts for medical educators in internal medicine and coaches them in creating their own teaching scripts. Every year, thousands of attending internists are asked to train the next generation of physicians to master a growing body of knowledge. Formal teaching time has become increasingly limited due to rising clinical workload, medical documentation requirements, duty hour restrictions, and other time pressures. In addition, today’s physicians-in-training expect teaching sessions that deliver focused, evidence-based content that is integrated into clinical workflow. In keeping with both time pressures and trainee expectations, academic internists must be prepared to effectively and efficiently teach important diagnostic and management concepts. A teaching script is a methodical and structured plan that aids in effective teaching. The teaching scripts in this book anticipate learners’ misconceptions, highlight a limited number of teaching points, provide evidence to support the teaching points, use strategies to engage the learners, and provide a cognitive scaffold for teaching the topic that the teacher can refine over time. All divisions of internal medicine (e.g. cardiology, rheumatology, and gastroenterology) are covered and a section on undifferentiated symptom-based presentations (e.g. fatigue, fever, and unintentional weight loss) is included. This book provides well-constructed teaching scripts for commonly encountered clinical scenarios, is authored by experienced academic internists and allows the reader to either implement them directly or modify them for their own use. Each teaching script is designed to be taught in 10-15 minutes, but can be easily adjusted by the reader for longer or shorter talks. Teaching Scripts in Internal Medicine is an ideal tool for internal medicine attending physicians and trainees, as well as physician’s assistants, nurse practitioners, and all others who teach and learn internal medicine.

Book Chalk Talk and Crayon Presentation

Download or read book Chalk Talk and Crayon Presentation written by Charles L. Bartholomew and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chalk Talk and Crayon Presentation: A Handbook of Practice and Performance in Pictorial Expression of Ideas The speaker along any line who uses a story, relates an anecdote or describes a scene, is in reality drawing a picture with words before his audience. The use of illustrations is not confined to entertainment. The appeal through the eye is universal. The lecturer who presents facts in picture most pleasingly conveys information to others. The teacher who can visualize ideas is the one whose lessons will be most enduring, as well as most attractive. The reformer or evangelist who can present truths in picture most quickly attracts attention and most convincingly arrives at conclusions. One need not be an artist to convey ideas pictorially. The simple diagrammatic picturing of ideas constituted the printed language of many primitive peoples. The lecturer, teacher, reformer or promoter of thought along any line, whether in business, education or entertainment, will do well to get the habit of carrying a piece of crayon before his audience, if it is for no other purpose than focusing attention in the introduction of his subject. Download or read book Do Not Erase written by Jessica Wynne and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2021-06-22 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A photographic exploration of mathematicians’ chalkboards “A mathematician, like a painter or poet, is a maker of patterns,” wrote the British mathematician G. H. Hardy. In Do Not Erase, photographer Jessica Wynne presents remarkable examples of this idea through images of mathematicians’ chalkboards. While other fields have replaced chalkboards with whiteboards and digital presentations, mathematicians remain loyal to chalk for puzzling out their ideas and communicating their research. Wynne offers more than one hundred stunning photographs of these chalkboards, gathered from a diverse group of mathematicians around the world. The photographs are accompanied by essays from each mathematician, reflecting on their work and processes. Together, pictures and words provide an illuminating meditation on the unique relationships among mathematics, art, and creativity. The mathematicians featured in this collection comprise exciting new voices alongside established figures, including Sun-Yung Alice Chang, Alain Connes, Misha Gromov, Andre Neves, Kasso Okoudjou, Peter Shor, Christina Sormani, Terence Tao, Claire Voisin, and many others. The companion essays give insights into how the chalkboard serves as a special medium for mathematical expression. The volume also includes an introduction by the author, an afterword by New Yorker writer Alec Wilkinson, and biographical information for each contributor. Do Not Erase is a testament to the myriad ways that mathematicians use their chalkboards to reveal the conceptual and visual beauty of their discipline—shapes, figures, formulas, and conjectures created through imagination, argument, and speculation.

Book Protocols in the Classroom

Download or read book Protocols in the Classroom written by David Allen and published by Teachers College Press. This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For nearly 2 decades, Looking Together at Student Work and The Power of Protocols have sustained educators in their professional learning. Protocols in the Classroom expands the scope of those books from teachers’ professional learning to include students’ learning, providing teachers with the tools they need to use discussion protocols to support students in developing crucial skills and habits as readers, writers, critical thinkers, and active participants within the classroom community. For each protocol the authors provide a clear set of steps, tips for teachers and students in facilitating the protocol, and a story of a teacher using the protocol with students. The book is filled with resources for getting started using protocols with students, as well as for deepening the use of protocols over time. It also relates protocols to other strategies for supporting students’ learning, including Accountable Talk, Thinking Routines, and Socratic seminars. The authors describe how protocols contribute to a schoolwide culture of discussion, inquiry, and reflection. “These authors really know what they are writing about—not just protocols (though they are world experts there) but teaching and learning.” —From the Foreword by Joseph P. McDonald, emeritus professor, New York University “Excellent examples, along with multiple protocols, provide the tools to get started immediately. This book is a phenomenal resource.” —Kari Thierer, School Reform Initiative “This is the perfect guidebook for teachers to use protocols effectively in their classrooms.” —Ron Berger, EL Education
