Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 'Paektusan Generals' have ruled supreme over North Korea since 1948, three Kims to rule them all. North Korean historiography, ideology and statecraft have it that Kim Il Sung, Kim Jong Il and Kim Jong Un are everything from Alpha to Omega as far as power and charisma is concerned in Pyongyang. Historians might of course suggest that this was not always so, that North Korea had to create its own narrative and mythology as it went along to develop, consolidate and maintain control over its territory. Kim Il Sung had to be transformed along the way from guerrilla fighter to father of the nation, founder of a dynasty, heir to the energies and power of Mount Paektu. This book explores a character vital to this story and its mythographies, but little known and rarely deeply considered, Kim Jong Suk, the first wife of Kim Il Sung, mother to Kim Jong Il and grandmother to Kim Jong Un. Kim Jong Suk is herself transformed by North Korean history, melded by the political energies of Pyongyang's theatric politics, moulded by projections of geomantic power from both Korea's deep past, and nationalist present. Robert Winstanley-Chesters traverses the imagined and reconstructed mythologies of Kim Jong Suk's transformation from traumatised child of colonial oppression, to notorious 'crackshot', revolutionary warrior hero, a New Goddess on Mount Paektu.

Book Change and Continuity in North Korean Politics

Download or read book Change and Continuity in North Korean Politics written by Adam Cathcart and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2016-11-03 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the years since the death of Kim Jong-il and the formal acknowledgement of Kim Jong-un as head of state, the North Korean regime has made a series of moves to further augment and consolidate the ideological foundations of Kimism and cement the young leader’s legitimacy. Historical narratives have played a critical, if often unnoticed, role in this process. This book seeks to chronicle these historical changes and continuities. Continuity and Change in North Korean Politics explores the stable and shifting political, cultural and economic landscapes of North Korea in the era of Kim Jong-un. The contributors deploy a variety of methodologies of analysis focused on the content, narratives and discourses of politics under Kim Jong-un, tracing its historical roots and contemporary practical and conceptual manifestations. Moving beyond most analyses of North Korea’s political and institutional ideologies, the book explores uncharted spaces of social and cultural relations, including children’s literature, fisheries, grassland reclamation, commemorative culture, and gender. By examining critical moments of change and continuity in the country’s past, it builds a holistic analysis of national politics as it is currently deployed and experienced. Demonstrating how historical, political and cultural narratives continue to be adapted to suit new and challenging circumstances, this book will be of interest to students and scholars of Korean Studies, Korean Politics and Asian Studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If we want to improve life on earth and our own lives, it is necessary to find a new guide: one that can meet the challenges of our time and of the future. The old guides were good in principle, but have become bogged down in calcified structures, often accomplishing the opposite of what was originally intended. The development of society makes it necessary to find new guiding principles from time to time. To do so, however, we need to know what the history was, how the present society is structured, and how it is likely to develop. The author aims to discover this by highlighting the following topics: Information: truth and lies Conspiracies: real and imagined conspiracies Nodes and choices: in history and as individuals Education Religions Cultures and subcultures Good and evil Resolving conflicts Freedom Justice Security How a poor country can become rich. Nature and the environment and global warming Art Creativity The meaning of life Peace Reform of the United Nations Health: Physical and mental Advice on how to become happy What ultimately matters is how to safeguard and promote life on earth. According to the author, making the right choice at certain crucial moments (called "nodes") is of great importance. Ultimately, it is about love and the unity of all and everything,

Book Religion in Japanese Daily Life

Download or read book Religion in Japanese Daily Life written by David C. Lewis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-22 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are Japanese people religious – and, if so, in what ways? David Lewis addresses this question from the perspective of ordinary Japanese people in the context of their life cycles, and explores why they engage in religious activities. He not only discusses how Japanese people engage in different religious practices as they encounter new events in their lives but also analyses the attitudes and motivations behind their behaviour. Activities such as fortune-telling, religious rites in the workplace, ancestral rites and visits to shrines and temples are actually engaged in by many people who view themselves as ‘non- religious’ but express their motivations in terms other than the conventional ‘religious’ ones. This book outlines the religious options available, and assesses why people choose particular religious activities at various times in their lives or in specific circumstances. The author challenges some widespread assumptions about religion in urban and industrial contexts and also shows how some of the underlying motivations behind Japanese behaviour are expressed both in religious and non-religious forms.
