Book Edible and Medicinal Mushrooms of New England and Eastern Canada

Download or read book Edible and Medicinal Mushrooms of New England and Eastern Canada written by David L. Spahr and published by North Atlantic Books. This book was released on 2018-12-11 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This beautifully illustrated guidebook provides specific, easy-to-understand information on finding, collecting, identifying, and preparing the safer and more common edible and medicinal mushroom species of New England and Eastern Canada. Author David Spahr, a trained commercial photographer, here combines his mycological expertise and photographic skill to produce an attractive and detailed overview of his subject. Based on decades of practical experience and research, the book is written in a clear and forthright style that avoids the dry, generic descriptions of most field guides. Edible and Medicinal Mushrooms of New England and Eastern Canada also provides useful ideas for cooking mushrooms. Rather than simply providing recipes, the book discusses the cooking characteristics of each variety, with advice about matching species with appropriate foods. Many mushrooms contain unique medicinal components for boosting the immune system to fight cancer, HIV, and other diseases, and Spahr offers practical and prudent guidelines for exploration of this rapidly emerging area of alternative therapeutic practice.

Book A Fall Cruise Guide to Eastern Canada and New England 2019 20

Download or read book A Fall Cruise Guide to Eastern Canada and New England 2019 20 written by Dr Lew Deitch and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2019-04-26 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every year a transformation occurs in the broadleaf forests of eastern Canada and the northeastern United States. It is known as the changing of the colors, and it is one of nature's most breathtaking spectacles. Going back as far as colonial times, locals would ride their carriages or wagons into the countryside and often picnic or camp out just to witness this spectacle, many spending the weekend in communion with nature. By the late 19th century, railroads began to offer special excursions that brought visitors from even greater distances. Country inns that used to cater to spring and summer visitors from the cities began to remain open past the Labor/Labour Day weekend to accommodate those who were now coming to enjoy the fall foliage. Visitors were dubbed "leaf peepers" by locals and this term is still widely used today. The idea of fall cruising the St. Lawrence River, around the shores of the Canadian Atlantic provinces and the New England shores came later, and today this is one of the most in demand itineraries with most major cruise lines participating. What easier way to see the cavalcade of brilliant colors without the need to be driving hundreds of miles, staying in numerous hotels or country inns than to do it on board a luxury cruise ship. As more people are introduced to the comfort and convenience of cruising, it has become one of the most sought after means for viewing the changing colors of eastern Canada and New England. Again there is one limitation to a fall cruise to see the colors as opposed to motoring. This two volume set is designed to give you the best information possible to help you plan what to see, where to dine and how to maximize your onshore time at each of the ports of call in Eastern Canada and New England during the magnificent fall season. This is not a mass market book, but one designed to bring you the very best of what awaits you on shore. This is Volume 2, which brings you the New England ports of call.

Book excerpt: This is a totally new and revised book that takes you on a virtual tour of the major and minor ports of call in Eastern Canada and New England during the fall colour season. Of all the cruises in North America, this is the most sought after because of the drama and beauty of the changing colours. However, in recent years with the climates of the world showing a warming trend, it is becoming harder to predict the specific time for peak fall colour. This book explores every aspect of what it means to take a cruise through the St. Lawrence River, the Atlantic Provinces and the coast of New England. The author's many years of experience in the cruise industry combined with his knowledge and love of this part of the world makes this an unrivaled guide. Unlike the large mass-market guides, this one is tailored to what you need to know when spending one day or just a few hours in port while on a cruise through the area. Tips on what to see, where to dine and shop will help you maximize your cruise experience.

Book A Personal Fall Cruise Guide to Eastern Canada and New England 2022 23

Download or read book A Personal Fall Cruise Guide to Eastern Canada and New England 2022 23 written by Dr Lew Deitch and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2022-02-26 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every year a transformation occurs in the broadleaf forests of eastern Canada and the northeastern United States. It is known as the changing of the colors, and it is one of nature's most breathtaking spectacles. As the days begin to shorten and the nights become colder, the leaves of the deciduous broadleaf trees begin to lose their ability to produce the vital sugars that keep the tree nourished during spring and summer. The trees prepare to become dormant in advance of the long, cold winters. As the leaves begin to die, a physical change occurs in which the chemical composition of each leaf is altered. The end result is an incredible transformation of the leaf color from green to yellow, gold, orange or red, depending upon the particular species. And since the forests are a mix of species, the colors splash across the landscape in a patchwork quilt of daubs of brilliance. Whole hillsides or riverbanks begin to blaze in vivid warm tones, visually dazzling to the human eye. And it is this natural phenomenon that draws visitors from all over the world to bear witness. It begins in the northern reaches of the broadleaf forest where it mixes with the great boreal taiga whose coniferous trees do not shed their needles all at once. By mid-September the first tinges of color were always seen north of the St. Lawrence River in the Canadian Shield or at the higher elevations of the northern Appalachian Mountains of the New England states. Slowly as the calendar progresses, the color change works its way south or lower in elevation until by mid to late October the whole region would generally be ablaze. Like a real fire, the change engulfs every broadleaf tree, joining all their shades of color into a kaleidoscope of hues that brings out the cameras and paintbrushes. It is important to note that with warming temperatures brought about by climate change, there have been significant changes in the timing and intensity of the fall colors. What was noted above is no longer as reliable a guide to the changing of the colors. Much now depends upon how warm the daytime temperatures are in September and into early October. This will impact both the start of the fall color season and also the intensity of the actual color itself. In 2015, for example, the colors came about two weeks later than normal but were as intense and brilliant as those of us who have lived in these parts can remember. In 2017, exceptionally unseasonable temperatures persisted into early October. Thus the fall color season came late and in many areas it was nowhere near as vibrant as expected, nor did it last as long. Yet in many localized pockets the color was brilliant and even lasted until early November. Once it was so reliable that you could book a tour or cruise in late September or early October and virtually be assured of a dynamic color change. In 2020 and 2021 the fall colors were quite brilliant and lasted well into the early part of November.
