Book Invoking the Invisible Hand

Download or read book Invoking the Invisible Hand written by Robert Asen and published by MSU Press. This book was released on 2009-03-02 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Invoking the Invisible Hand Robert Asen scrutinizes contemporary debates over proposals to privatize Social Security. Asen argues that a rights-based rhetoric employed by Social Security's original supporters enabled advocates of privatization to align their proposals with the widely held belief that Social Security functions simply as a return on a worker's contributions and that it is not, in fact, a social insurance program. By analyzing major debates over a preeminent American institution, Asen reveals the ways in which language is deployed to identify problems for public policy, craft policy solutions, and promote policies to the populace. He shows how debate participants seek to create favorable contexts for their preferred policies and how they connect these policies to idealized images of the nation.

Book New Directions in Saskatchewan Public Policy

Download or read book New Directions in Saskatchewan Public Policy written by David McGrane and published by University of Regina Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this new scholarly compilation by David P. McGrane, established and emerging trends in Saskatchewan public policy are the foundation for setting new directions for the province in the 21st century. In what direction should Saskatchewan be headed in the 21st century? To answer this question, academics from various disciplines at the University of Regina and University of Saskatchewan have come together to produce New Directions in Saskatchewan Public Policy, the first edited book exclusively devoted to public policy in the province, with chapters discussing taxation, immigration, agriculture, urban affairs, poverty reduction, the social economy, labour, aging, Aboriginal public administration, and climate change. The authors provide an analysis and description of the current policies of the Wall government, and also look back to explore what the Romanow and Calvert governments did in these areas. The overarching theme of the book is that, despite the province's robust economic growth, significant public policy challenges remina for the Saskatchewan provincial government. The lesson is that economic growth does not magically solve entrenched societal problems and that economic prosperity will dissipate if worrisome social trends are left unchecked. While many scholarly books shy away from prescription, the authors of this book include sections in their chapters that set out new directions for policy development. As such, the book not only contains solid analysis of the present policy situation, but also offers concrete ideas for future policy makers.

Book Aging and the Macroeconomy

Download or read book Aging and the Macroeconomy written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2013-01-10 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States is in the midst of a major demographic shift. In the coming decades, people aged 65 and over will make up an increasingly large percentage of the population: The ratio of people aged 65+ to people aged 20-64 will rise by 80%. This shift is happening for two reasons: people are living longer, and many couples are choosing to have fewer children and to have those children somewhat later in life. The resulting demographic shift will present the nation with economic challenges, both to absorb the costs and to leverage the benefits of an aging population. Aging and the Macroeconomy: Long-Term Implications of an Older Population presents the fundamental factors driving the aging of the U.S. population, as well as its societal implications and likely long-term macroeconomic effects in a global context. The report finds that, while population aging does not pose an insurmountable challenge to the nation, it is imperative that sensible policies are implemented soon to allow companies and households to respond. It offers four practical approaches for preparing resources to support the future consumption of households and for adapting to the new economic landscape.

Book New Directions in Old Age Policies

Download or read book New Directions in Old Age Policies written by Janie S. Steckenrider and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1998-09-11 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the changed political environment in the United States and what it means for the policies and programs benefiting the elderly and their families. It includes chapters written by distinguished contributors, such as Fernando Torres-Gil, Assistant Secretary for Aging, Clinton Administration, and discusses specific, realistic policy options for the future. New Directions in Old-Age Policies suggests that old-age policy in the changed political environment is a paradox of competing agendas: individual versus fiscal responsibility in policy choices, doing more for the elderly and their families with fewer public resources, and prioritizing the status quo or change in policy decisions for the elderly.

Book New Directions in the Sociology of Aging

Download or read book New Directions in the Sociology of Aging written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2013-12-26 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aging of the population of the United States is occurring at a time of major economic and social changes. These economic changes include consideration of increases in the age of eligibility for Social Security and Medicare and possible changes in benefit levels. Furthermore, changes in the social context in which older individuals and families function may well affect the nature of key social relationships and institutions that define the environment for older persons. Sociology offers a knowledge base, a number of useful analytic approaches and tools, and unique theoretical perspectives that can facilitate understanding of these demographic, economic, and social changes and, to the extent possible, their causes, consequences and implications. New Directions in the Sociology of Aging evaluates the recent contributions of social demography, social epidemiology and sociology to the study of aging and identifies promising new research directions in these sub-fields. Included in this study are nine papers prepared by experts in sociology, demography, social genomics, public health, and other fields, that highlight the broad array of tools and perspectives that can provide the basis for further advancing the understanding of aging processes in ways that can inform policy. This report discusses the role of sociology in what is a wide-ranging and diverse field of study; a proposed three-dimensional conceptual model for studying social processes in aging over the life cycle; a review of existing databases, data needs and opportunities, primarily in the area of measurement of interhousehold and intergenerational transmission of resources, biomarkers and biosocial interactions; and a summary of roadblocks and bridges to transdisciplinary research that will affect the future directions of the field of sociology of aging.
