Download or read book Whiskey Tango Foxtrot written by Alan Axelrod and published by Skyhorse. This book was released on 2013-06-01 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few areas of human endeavor have produced more—or more colorful—terms than has the military. Soldiers, sailors, marines, and airmen have over centuries come up with words, phrases, and acronyms to express everything from raw emotion to complex technology. The military is both a distinctive way of life and a community, and a command of its slang is essential to admission to full membership within the group. Most military slang is almost always familiar only to the troops. Mating mosquitoes, for example, refers to the two-chevron insignia of the Army corporal. Gadget describes an enlisted man or woman who is temporarily promoted to a position of increased responsibility to fill an urgent need, while a panty raid is a foray into enemy territory for the purpose of gathering evidence of adversary activity. Among the less delicate entries are the day the eagle shits, or payday, and skimmer puke, a submariner’s term for any surface ship sailor. (And then there’s the book’s title, the acronym for What The F-ck). Many elements of military vocabulary have become part of our national speech: John Wayne, boondocks, attaboy, and hot dog. But whether the words and phrases are the exclusive property of our fighting men and women or are also in general use, the “real” language of the modern military set forth in this lively book embodies a uniquely American attitude and an exuberantly colloquial, unwaveringly honest, and enduringly American grace under pressure.

Book Dictionary of Naval Terms

Download or read book Dictionary of Naval Terms written by Deborah W. Cutler and published by US Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most professions have their own languages, and the U.S. Navy with its obscure terms and labored acronyms is certainly no exception. Those in and out of the naval profession will find this dictionary an essential tool in deciphering their unique language, which has its origins in the days of sail and continues to mutate in the ever-growing vocabulary of technology. For this completely revised and fully updated edition, Deborah Cutler and Thomas Cutler identify and clearly define a vast array of terms that can make documents and conversations with naval professionals so bewildering. Highly qualified 'NAVSPEAK linguists, the Cutlers have built upon the original works, culling, adding, and bringing the entries up to date for the twenty-first century. Official terms like Seapower 21 are included as well as such colorful, unofficial vocabulary as cannon cocker. Helpful notations of word origins for the very old and very new make definitions even clearer.

Book U S Department of Defense Handbook of Military Symbols

Download or read book U S Department of Defense Handbook of Military Symbols written by Department of Defense and published by Skyhorse. This book was released on 2013-07-09 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Being able to effectively communicate using maps, charts, and symbols is an integral part of any military operation. The system contained in the U.S. Department of Defense Handbook of Military Symbols (MIL-STD-2525C) is designed to eliminate conflicts within various symbol sets and to establish a core set of common symbology under one Department of Defense standard. This standardization is essential during joint service operations, and this edition has been edited by Colonel Peter T. Underwood, USMC (Ret.), to cover the topics and symbols most useful to military and civilian readers alike. This handbook provides sets of C2 symbols, a coding scheme for symbol automation and information transfer, and technical details to support systems, which make it the best tool to learn the complete symbology of warfighting. It provides a thorough list of definitions and acronyms, along with tables and figures displaying thousands of symbol variants.
