Book Labour Markets and Employment in Asia

Download or read book Labour Markets and Employment in Asia written by Association of Asian Social Science Research Councils. Conference and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many developing countries in Asia have registered high growth rates with rising productivity for the last few decades in the wake of globalization. However, the high growth has not been translated into proportionate increase in employment. In fact, the period is largely marked with slow growth in employment opportunities and rising unemployment and underemployment. Accordingly, the issue of employment has come to occupy centre-stage in the current debate on development linked with globalization. The volume, based on revised papers presented in the XVIth Conference of the Association of Asian Social Science Research Councils (AASSREC) in Delhi, explores the issues of growth and employment in detail in the context of selected Asian economies. The nine country papers included in the volume provide useful insights to the issues relating to labour markets and challenges of unemployment in these countries. As a whole, the articles argue for a growth strategy that aims at employment creation and equitable development. The volume will be useful for researchers, policymakers and all those interested in the issues of labour markets and employment in Asia.

Book Labor and Economic Growth in Five Asian Countries

Download or read book Labor and Economic Growth in Five Asian Countries written by Walter Galenson and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1992-03-23 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work explores developments in the labor markets of five countries--South Korea, Malaysia, Taiwan, Thailand, and the Philippines--which have undergone successful economic development during the past quarter of a century. This includes employment, earnings, industrial relations, and social security measures. While the Philippines' progress has lagged, the other four countries constitute the most successful group of the world's developing countries--offering a interesting contrast in approaches to growth. The author's methodology is comparative by specific subject, so that a correlation of developmental stages and the emergence of particular features of the labor market emerges. This study is unique in that inter-country comparisons are made in terms of specific aspects of the labor market. The work will be of interest to economists, political scientists, and sociologists concerned with problems of development. And it will be useful in pointing the way to successful development practices.

Book Growth Employment and Migration in Southeast Asia

Download or read book Growth Employment and Migration in Southeast Asia written by Prema-chandra Athukorala and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2000 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comparative analysis of growth, structural change and labour market dynamics in the Greater Mekong countries (Yunnan Province in China, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Lao PDR and Myanmar) of Southeast Asia is the first of its kind. It explores economic integration and cooperation, the possibilities for improving the functioning of labour markets and facilitating mutually beneficial labour flows in the region. The book begins with a comparative overview of policy reforms, economic performance and structural changes, focusing on economic relations in the Greater Mekong countries. It then examines the salient features of labour market structures and policies, patterns of cross-border migration, and information systems, paying attention to the similarities and differences between countries. It is especially timely in the context of economic transition from socialist systems in the three Indochina countries, the ongoing policy reforms in Yunnan Province and Myanmar, and in light of the Asian financial crisis in shaping growth trends. The analysis yields policy recommendations for improvement in labour market performance. The book will be of great interest to development and labour economists and those working in the field of Asian studies, as well as to policymakers.

Book New Welfare States in East Asia

Download or read book New Welfare States in East Asia written by Gyu-Jin Hwang and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2011 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fast changing economic climate is creating substantial pressure for welfare state restructuring worldwide. Yet the discussion regarding challenges faced and the responses required has been confined to the 'standard welfare states' in the West. This book examines whether these challenges also apply to the countries in the East, whether these countries have generated different responses to their Western counterparts, and whether they have undergone a process of regime transformation while responding to these pressures. Comparative in approach, this book offers lively discussion on the new social challenges faced in East Asia following the unprecedented scale of the recent global financial crisis. It reaches beyond policy descriptions to offer more systematic analyses of welfare restructuring in the region in relation to the fast changing global economic order. By examining the dynamics of welfare state restructuring both in terms of continuity and change, it explores intensified impacts of global restructuring of welfare and the nature of welfare state adaptation in the region.
