Book New Current Sensing Solutions for Low cost High power density Digitally Controlled Power Converters

Download or read book New Current Sensing Solutions for Low cost High power density Digitally Controlled Power Converters written by Silvio Ziegler and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: [Truncated abstract] This thesis studies current sensing techniques that are designed to meet the requirements for the next generation of power converters. Power converters are often standardised, so that they can be replaced with a model from another manufacturer without an expensive system redesign. For this reason, the power converter market is highly competitive and relies on cutting-edge technology, which increases power conversion efficiency and power density. High power density and conversion efficiency reduce the system cost, and thus make the power converter more attractive to the customer. Current sensing is a vital task in power converters, where the current information is required for monitoring and control purposes. In order to achieve the above-mentioned goals, existing current sensing techniques have to be improved in terms of cost, power loss and size. Simultaneously, current information needs to be increasingly available in digital form to enable digital control, and to allow the digital transmission of the current information to a centralised monitoring and control unit. All this requires the output signal of a particular current sensing technique to be acquired by an analogue-to-digital converter, and thus the output voltage of the current sensor has to be sufficiently large. This thesis thoroughly reviews contemporary current sensing techniques and identifies suitable techniques that have the potential to meet the performance requirements of the next-generation of power converters. After the review chapter, three novel current sensing techniques are proposed and investigated: 1) The usefulness of the resistive voltage drop across a copper trace, which carries the current to be measured, to detect electrical current is evaluated. Simulations and experiments confirm that this inherently lossless technique can measure high currents at reasonable measurement bandwidth, good accuracy and low cost if the sense wires are connected properly. 2) Based on the mutual inductance theory found during the investigation of the copper trace current sense method, a modification of the well-known lossless inductor current sense method is proposed and analysed. This modification involves the use of a coupled sense winding that significantly improves the frequency response. Hence, it becomes possible to accurately monitor the output current of a power converter with the benefits of being lossless, exhibiting good sensitivity and having small size. 3) A transformer based DC current sense method is developed especially for digitally controlled power converters. This method provides high accuracy, large bandwidth, electrical isolation and very low thermal drift. Overall, it achieves better performance than many contemporary available Hall Effect sensors. At the same time, the cost of this current sensor is significantly lower than that of Hall Effect current sensors. A patent application has been submitted. .... The current sensing techniques have been studied by theory, hardware experiments and simulations. In addition, the suitability of the detection techniques for mass production has been considered in order to access the ability to provide systems at low-cost.

Book Input Voltage Ripple Based Sensorless Current Sharing Auto tuning Controller for Multiphase DC DC Converters

Download or read book Input Voltage Ripple Based Sensorless Current Sharing Auto tuning Controller for Multiphase DC DC Converters written by Wangxin Huang and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multiphase power converter topology has been widely adopted for Point-of-Load (PoL) converter application. To achieve a high-performance multiphase converter design, several design considerations must be taken into account during the design phase. These factors include but are not limited to high power density (smaller size), fast transient response and equal current sharing which are introduced in Chapter 1. Current sharing, as a key design consideration to ensure reliable operation of multiphase DC-DC converter, is further explored in this work. Equal current sharing control loop is typically required for multiphase converter in order to prevent inductor current saturation and overstressing the devices in certain phases. Several conventional current sharing control schemes are first reviewed in Chapter 2. The major drawback of these schemes is the need for accurate current sensing for each phase, which causes the performance of the current sharing to be highly sensitive to the accuracy of current sensing in addition to increased cost and complexity. To address the need for accurate current sensing, a new digital sensorless current sharing control scheme is proposed and developed in this work. It is based on auto-tuning the duty cycle value for each phase while observing the input capacitor voltage of the multiphase converter. The theoretical basis/observation of the proposed concept is presented and mathematically verified in Chapter 2 followed by an introduction of the operation of the proposed controller. In addition to eliminating all of the current sensors, the proposed controller eliminates the impact of voltage sensing inaccuracies on the performance of current sharing. The simulation verification of the theoretical basis and operation of the proposed controller is performed by using MATLAB®/SIMULINK® software package. The simulation model is introduced and the simulation results are presented in Chapter 3. A proof-of-concept experimental prototype set-up is first introduced in Chapter 4. The design and implementation of the proposed controller are then covered in details. The periodic and continuous auto-tuning operations are demonstrated under both steady-state and load transient conditions. The experimental results are presented and discussed to further validate the proposed controller. Finally, some directions for future work are given.

Book An Integrated Lossless and Accurate Current sensing Technique for High performance Switching Regulators

Download or read book An Integrated Lossless and Accurate Current sensing Technique for High performance Switching Regulators written by H. Pooya Forghani-zadeh and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Switching power converters are an indispensable part of every battery-operated consumer electronic product, nourishing regulated voltages to various subsystems. In these circuits, sensing the inductor current is not only necessary for protection and control but also is critical to be done in a lossless and accurate fashion for state-of-the-art advanced control techniques, which are devised to optimize transient response, increase the efficiency over a wide range of loads, eliminate off-chip compensation networks, and integrate the power inductor. However, unavailability of a universal, integrable, lossless, and accurate current-sensing technique impedes the realization of those advanced techniques and limit their applications. Unfortunately, use of a conventional series sense resistor is not recommended in high-performance, high-power switching regulators where more than 90% efficiency is required because of their high current levels. A handful of lossless current-sensing techniques are available but their accuracies are significantly lower than the traditional sense resistor scheme. Among available lossless but not accurate techniques, an off-chip, filter-based method that uses a tuned filter across the inductor to estimate current flow and its accuracy is dependent on the inductance and its equivalent series resistance (ESR) was selected for improvement because of its inherent continuous and low-noise operation. A schemes is proposed to adapt the filter technique for integration by automatically adjusting bandwidth and gain of an on-chip programmable gm-C filter to the off-chip power inductor during the system start-up through measuring the inductance and its ESR with on-chip generated test currents. The IC prototype in AMI2s 0.5-um CMOS process achieved overall DC and AC gain errors of 8% and 9%, respectively, at 0.8 A DC load and 0.2 A ripple currents for inductors from 4 uH-14 uH and ESR from 48 mOhm to 384 mOhm when lossless, state-of-the-art schemes achieve 20640% error and only when the nominal specifications of power component (power MOSFET or inductor) are known. Moreover, the proposed circuit improved the efficiency of a test bed current-mode controlled switching regulator by more than 2.6% at 0.8 A load compared to the traditional sense resistor technique with a 50 mOhm sense resistor.

Book Digital Signal Processing in Power Electronics Control Circuits

Download or read book Digital Signal Processing in Power Electronics Control Circuits written by Krzysztof Sozański and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-05-10 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This revised and extended second edition covers problems concerning the design and realization of digital control algorithms for power electronics circuits using digital signal processing (DSP) methods. This book discusses signal processing, starting from analog signal acquisition, through conversion to digital form, methods of filtration and separation, and ending with pulse control of output power transistors. The book is focused on two applications for the considered methods of digital signal processing, a three-phase shunt active power filter and a digital class-D audio power amplifier. The book bridges the gap between power electronics and digital signal processing. Many control algorithms and circuits for power electronics in the current literature are described using analog transmittances. This may not always be acceptable, especially if half of the sampling frequencies and half of the power transistor switching frequencies are close to the band of interest. Therefore in this book, a digital circuit is treated as a digital circuit with its own peculiar characteristics, rather than an analog circuit. This helps to avoid errors and instability. This edition includes a new chapter dealing with selected problems of simulation of power electronics systems together with digital control circuits. The book includes numerous examples using MATLAB and PSIM programs.
