Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "On the morning of 26 April 1607, three small ships carrying 143 Englishmen arrived off the Virginia coast of North America, having spent four months at sea.... All hoped for financial success and perhaps a little adventure; as it turned out, their tiny settlement eventually would evolve from colony into a prominent state in an entirely new nation." So begins Old Dominion, New Commonwealth: A History of Virginia, 1607-2007 and the remarkable story behind the founding not only of the state of Virginia but of our nation. With this book, the historians Ronald L. Heinemann, John G. Kolp, Anthony S. Parent Jr., and William G. Shade collaborate to provide a comprehensive, accessible, one-volume history of Virginia, the first of its kind since the 1970s. In seventeen narrative chapters, the authors tackle the four centuries of Virginia’s history from Jamestown through the present, emphasizing the major themes that play throughout Virginia history—change and continuity, a conservative political order, race and slavery, economic development, and social divisions—and how they relate to national events. Including helpful bibliographical listings at the end of each chapter as well as a general listing of useful sources and Websites, the book is truly a treasure trove for any student, scholar, or general-interest reader looking to find out more about the history of Virginia and our nation. Timed to coincide with the 2007 quadricentennial, Old Dominion, New Commonwealth will stand as a classic for years to come.

Book The Development Business

Download or read book The Development Business written by M. McWilliam and published by Springer. This book was released on 2001-12-03 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Commonwealth development Corporation (CDC) was launched with all-party support as one of the initiatives to build a better post-war world. After a troubled start it earned its role as Britain's development agency. The chairmanship of Lord Reith in the 1950s left a legacy of robust independence within the public sector framework. Few public sector businesses escaped privatisation by the Conservative Governments of the 1980s and 1990s, yet CDC was exempted. The first privatisation announcement of the New Labour Government in 1997 was in respect of CDC and enabling legislation has since been passed to provide for a long-term public-private partnership. The compatibility of a continuing development role with meeting the requirements of investors is still controversial as CDC adapts its operations to those of a private equity fund for emerging economies. Sir Michael McWilliam has written a study of institutional transformation that reflects changing perceptions of the role of development agencies. His membership of the CDC Board and access to its records give authority to this appraisal and to the discussion of the proposed privatisation.

This book was released on 1991 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global political and economic change and its impact on the development process, together with ways to improve development policies - domestic and international - are the principal themes of our Report. In our work, we have learned that the problems and opportunities thrown up by these changes cannot be analysed in isolation ... We can find solutions only if we see theses changes as part of a rich, complex, confusing but potentially promising whole. The Commonwealth should take an early and sustained lead in bringing all these issues to the attention of governments and institutions. The aim would be to stimulate a wide ranging debate at many levels ... We hope that the debate will prepare the way for a meeting of Heads of Government representative of the global community to focus the world's attention on the impact of current changes on the process of development. From the ReportThe Group's Report points to the danger of further increase in the existing disparities, if action is not taken urgently by the developed and developing countries as well as the world community as a whole. It points to the mutuality of interest which makes action a necessity; and to the opportunities presented by change. But effective action will only be possible if there is ready acceptance that the challenge of development cannot be ignored; and that current piecemeal efforts are not the answer. International understanding and cooperation will be a critical requirement. From the Foreword by the Commonwealth Secretary-General

But in the past three decades the conventional pattern of structural transformation has changed, with the services sector growing faster than the manufacturing sector.
