Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental forensics is the application of scientific techniques for the purpose of identifying the source and age of a contaminant. Over the past several years, this study has been expanding as a course of study in academia, government and commercial markets. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) are among the governmental agencies that utilize the study of environmental forensics to ensure national security and to ensure that companies are complying with standards. Even the International Network for Environmental Compliance and Enforcement (INECE), a group supported by the European Commission and the World Bank, utilizes the study of environmental forensics as it applies to terror threats. This title is a hands-on guide for environmental scientists, engineers, consultants and industrial scientists to identify the origin and age of a contaminant in the environment and the issues involved in the process. An expansion of the authors' first title with Academic Press, Introduction to Environmental Forensics, this is a state-of-the-art reference for those exploring the scientific techniques available. - Up-to-date compendium for referencing forensic techniques unique to particular contaminants. - International scientific unit system - Contributors from around the world providing international examples and case studies.

Book Low Level Hexavalent Chromium Treatment Options

Download or read book Low Level Hexavalent Chromium Treatment Options written by Philip Brandhuber and published by American Water Works Association. This book was released on 2005-07-31 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In February 1999, the California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment issued a Public Health Goal (PHG) for total chromium of 2.5 μg/L. The PHG, based on a 10^6 risk level for 0.2 μg/L hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)], was 40 times less than the USEPA's contaminant MCL of 100 μg/L for total chromium [Cr(III) ] Cr(VI)]. The success of the movie Erin Brockovich, which popularized a groundwater chromium pollution lawsuit in Hinkley, California, sensitized the public to the health hazards of chromium in drinking water. In 2001, the California state legislature passed a bill requiring the California Department of Health Services to adopt an MCL for Cr(VI). All of these actions must be viewed from the perspective that, at the time, no technology had been demonstrated to be effective at treating chromium to concentrations consistent with the total chromium PHG or the Cr(VI) 10^6 risk level of 0.2 μg/L. The purpose of this report was to present the results of this partnership study, which included an analysis of chromium occurrence and co-occurrence, an evaluation of Cr(VI) removal technologies, and an examination of chromium oxidation and reduction chemistry. This study investigated nearly all of the potential methods of controlling Cr(VI) either through the use of technologies that remove Cr(VI) directly (adsorption, anion exchange, membrane filtration) or those that remove the reduced form of chromium, Cr(III) (precipitation with membranes or coagulation and precipitation with conventional or membrane filters). These technologies were investigated using laboratory-scale testing methods, including batch isotherm tests, bench membrane systems, flow-through mini-columns, and jar testing techniques. For most technologies, controlled water matrices were used to screen performance. Selected technologies were further assessed using natural groundwater matrices from the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power and the Glendale Water and Power groundwater facilities.

Book Environmental Analysis Laboratory Handbook

Download or read book Environmental Analysis Laboratory Handbook written by Anshul Nigam and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2020-09-23 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most comprehensive and up-to-date volume on environmental analysis available today, this is the standard laboratory reference for any environmental or chemical engineer, chemist, or scientist. Today, environmental issues are a great cause of concern at the global level, and universities and other institutions around the world are involved in research on climate change, deforestation, pollution control, and many other issues. Moreover, environmental science and environmental biotechnology are inherent parts of various courses while some universities provide degrees in these fields. Although the environment perspective of water is discussed time and again in research, academic, and non-academic discussions, there is no book summarizing protocols involved in water quality analysis. The information seems to be sporadically distributed on the internet. Even if available at all, the information does not discuss limits of the protocols or caveats involved. For example, essays on chemical oxygen demand (COD) on the internet mostly do not discuss differences between organic compounds of biological origin and aliphatic/aromatic. The authors have performed nearly all the protocols mentioned in this new volume, and their protocols are discussed in a simplified, easy-to-understand manner. The book has been written after elaborative discussions with and input from faculty and research students to ensure the clarity of the material for use on many levels. Further, the authors have emphasized low-cost methods which involve minimal use of high-end instrumentation keeping in mind limitations faced in developing countries. A valuable reference for engineers, scientists, chemists, and students, this volume is applicable to many different fields, across many different industries, at all levels. It is a must-have for any library.
