Book New Brunswick before the Equal Opportunity Program

Download or read book New Brunswick before the Equal Opportunity Program written by Laurel Lee Lewey and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2018-06-26 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prior to the implementation of the Equal Opportunity program in the 1960s, most New Brunswickers, many of them Francophone, lived with limited access to welfare, education, and health services. New Brunswick’s social services framework was similar to that of nineteenth-century England, and many people experienced the patronizing attitudes inherent in these laws. New Brunswick before the Equal Opportunity Program examines the observations and experiences of New Brunswick’s early social workers, who operated under this system, and illuminates how Premier Louis J. Robichaud’s Equal Opportunity program transformed the province’s social services. Authors Laurel Lewey, Louis J. Richard, and Linda Turner, describe more than a century of social work history, including the work of the earliest Acadian social workers. They also address the fact that the federal government did not take responsibility for social welfare of the Mi’kmaq and Maliseet people, planning for assimilation instead. Clan structures continued to be relied on while subsisting upon inadequate relief provisions.

Book Engineering Equal Opportunity

Download or read book Engineering Equal Opportunity written by William Bliss White and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Program of Equal Opportunity (EO) marked a period of wide-reaching reform in New Brunswick for the areas of local government, education, health, social welfare, as well as province’s court and jail system during the Long 1960s. The province was considered by many observers to be the “social laboratory” of Canada. Devised by the government of Louis Robichaud, EO was entrenched by the Acadian premier’s immediate successor Richard Hatfield. While consistent with the literature, this project is more forceful in its assertion that the two governments constituted one policy regime. New Brunswick flirted with government by technocracy at mid-century. These technocrats, actually a cadre of officials, consultants, and bureaucrats from a wide variety of backgrounds, espoused the tenets of high and low modernism in an effort to engineer a modern polity. They provided the main bridge between the two administrations. By applying this framework and engaging with a broad literature, a nuanced account of social change in the province is revealed. Technocrats and government officials looked out and looked within the province and ultimately brought top-down change to New Brunswick during the era of Equal Opportunity.

Book Ottawa and the Outer Provinces

Download or read book Ottawa and the Outer Provinces written by Stephen Tomblin and published by Lorimer. This book was released on 1995 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For decades, Ottawa has struggled with Atlantic Canada and the West over the question of political restructuring. Although Ottawa has often tried to push the "outer" provinces towards regional integration, it has never been successful. Ottawa and the Outer Provinces explores the idea of regional integration from several perspectives: it examines the relevance of the issue in Canadian history; the effect of institutional variables on the debate; the impact of past cultural experiences; and the challenge of balancing equity and efficiency principles in a divided policy. Ottawa and the Outer Provinces treats a perennial theme in Canadian political culture, examining it in light of both past successes and failures.
