Book Artists and Patrons in Post war Britain

Download or read book Artists and Patrons in Post war Britain written by Courtauld Institute of Art and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-01 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2001. An examination of art and patronage in Britain during the post-war years. It consists of five case studies, initially written as MA theses, that closely investigate aspects of the mechanisms of patronage outside the state institutions, while indicating structural links within it. The writers have sought to elucidate the relationship between patronage, the production of art and its dissemination. Without seeking to provide an inclusive account of patronage or art production in the early post-war years, their disparate and highly selective papers set up models for the structure of patronage under specific historical conditions. They assume an understanding that works of art are embedded in their social contexts, are products of the conditions under which they were produced, and that these contexts and conditions are complex, fluid and imbricated in one another.

Book The Franklin D Murphy Sculpture Garden at UCLA

Download or read book The Franklin D Murphy Sculpture Garden at UCLA written by Cynthia Burlingham and published by University of California Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For nearly thirty years, starting in the 1960s, Franklin D. Murphy was a dominant figure in the cultural development of Los Angeles. As chancellor of UCLA and later as chief executive of the "Times Mirror "company, Murphy channeled more than a billion dollars into the city's universities, museums, concert halls, and libraries. The Franklin D. Murphy Sculpture Garden, one of his landmark projects, is also one of the UCLA campus's great treasures. Standing as a model for sculpture gardens internationally since its dedication in 1967, the Murphy Garden features seventy-two important modern and contemporary sculptures in a five-acre site designed by landscape architect Ralph Cornell. This fully-illustrated catalog documents the entire Murphy Garden collection and provides a scholarly entry for each artist--a sampling of which includes Deborah Butterfield, Alexander Calder, Henri Matisse, Joan Miro, Henry Moore, Isamu Noguchi, Auguste Rodin, and David Smith. Three essays--by Victoria Steele, Cynthia Burlingham, and Marc Treib-- focus respectively on the role of Franklin Murphy in the garden's planning and execution, the acquisition of the sculptures, and the garden's significance within the history of sculpture garden design.

Book Brian Wall

    Book Details:
  • Author : Chris Stephens
  • Publisher : Momentum Books LLC
  • Release : 2006
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 242 pages

Download or read book Brian Wall written by Chris Stephens and published by Momentum Books LLC. This book was released on 2006 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is hard to understand why relatively little has been written about Brian Wall's contributions to modern sculpture, particularly since he has had such a dramatic impact upon the field, his colleagues, and global audiences. Happily, we now have a brilliant analysis for both professional and introductory readers, which captures splendidly the ambitious spirit and the lyrical creativity of Brian Wall. This is the first major study of his work, and it is long overdue. Stevens' volume is an elegant synthesis of theory and process, combined with a careful explanation of Wall's viewpoint and consistent use of materials. With glorious links that range from painting to poetry, the craft and the values of Brian Wall are presented with a purity and simplicity that mirrors the creative refinement of the sculptural works themselves. With remarkable impact, Wall has repeatedly tested the boundaries of contemporary visual art, with a daring and playful experimentation that juxtaposes architectural patterns with the courageous transformation of aesthetic space. top of his craft, or even someone committed to their own harmonious beauty, this splendid study of Brian Wall will become a treasured volume.
