Book excerpt: As the moments pass, Aolene begins second-guessing his incantations. Has he done something wrong? He has his doubts, right up until the moment he sees it, the bright fire that shoots out from the perimeter of the bloodstained circle, causing the wizard to turn away, hoping its great intensity will not blind him. As the flames begin to dissolve, the demon comes into focus, and the entire room brightens up in a fluorescent orange glow. This beast's eyes are generating all this light; they are like that of fire. From its mouth, foams a thick black smoke. It is the size and shape of a man, except that its skin is covered in scales, and its body is encased in something resembling dried mud. The demon's hands are webbed and long claws stretch out inches from the tips of its fingers. There are grey bat-shaped wings sprouting from its back, easily crossing the sphere-shaped markings on the floor beneath it ... the demon appears to have no teeth, but this is only until it smiles, focusing in on its captor. Aolene takes in the fear, noticing its pointed fangs. They are the only thing in this room that sparkle.

Rex Mumford brings to life in this western novel much of the suspense, action, and surprise of the traditional old west. Follow the lives of those portrayed in this novel during a time when men and women wanted little more than some land and to live peacefully. Yet when faced with difficult challenges they could and would meet them head on. Often they were the judge and jury with little time to decide the fate of those that wronged them. When someone draws on you, you only have two choices, be faster or die in: The Lawless Land Brown's Hole, one of the stops along the outlaw trail. A beautiful valley for ranching, but also a haven for those hiding from the law with no were else to run. More often than not, they possessed only a fast horse, and even faster gun hand. It was fight or die. Most fought, some died. Two deputy marshals, leaving their badges and authority behind, and a girl with a different agenda, all enter the valley known as Brown's Hole. Two looking for answers, one looking for revenge. Faced with challenges and odds never before faced, each will find what they are looking for and a whole lot more than they bargained for. The only problem is surviving.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This marvelous book, borne of a unique collaboration between Dr. Allen Schoen—a world-renowned veterinarian and author—and trainer and competitor of many years Susan Gordon, introduces the 25 Principles of Compassionate Equitation. These Principles, conceived by Dr. Schoen and Gordon, are a set of developmental guidelines, encouraging a level of personal awareness that may be enacted not only through the reader's engagement with horses, but can be extended to all humans and sentient beings he or she encounters. The 25 Principles share stories and outline current, peer-reviewed studies that identify and support methods of training, handling, and caring for horses that constitute a safe, healthy, non-stressful, and pain-free environment. Through their Compassionate Equestrian program, the authors encourage all involved in the horse industry to approach training and handling with compassion and a willingness to alleviate suffering. By developing deeper compassion for their own horses, and subsequently, all equines, equestrians transcend their differences in breed preferences, riding disciplines, and training methodologies. This leads to the ability to empathize and connect more closely with the “global collective” of horses and horse people. In doing so, a worldwide community of compassionate equine practitioners and horse owners will emerge, which will not only benefit the horses: People involved with horses are found in many influential segments of society and have the potential to affect wide circles of friends, acquaintances, and co-workers from every walk of life. These are simple changes any horse person can make that can have a vast impact on the horse industry and society as a whole.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'All men must die': or 'Valar Morghulis', as the traditional Essos greeting is rendered in High Valyrian. And die they do – in prodigious numbers; in imaginatively varied and gruesome ways; and often in terror within the viciously unpredictable world that is HBO's sensational evocation of Game of Thrones. Epic in scope and in imaginative breadth, the stories that are brought to life tell of the dramatic rise and fall of nations, the brutal sweeping away of old orders and the advent of new autarchs in the eternal quest for dominion. Yet, as this book reveals, many potent and intimate narratives of love and passion can be found within these grand landscapes of heroism, honour and death. They focus on strong relationships between women and family, as well as among the anti-heroes, the 'cripples, bastards and broken things'. In this vital follow-up to Winter Is Coming (2015), acclaimed medievalist Carolyne Larrington explores themes of power, blood-kin, lust and sex in order to draw entirely fresh meanings out of the show of the century.

From the vast level acreage, where longhorns grew fat on lush grass, the surrounding hills looked verdant and hospitable; but this was pure deceit on Nature's part. Those hills were treacherous, and Bryant Cavendish loved them for that selfsame treachery. Sitting on the porch of his rambling house, the bitter old man spat tobacco-flavored curses at the infirmities that restricted him. His legs, tortured by rheumatism, were propped on a bentwood chair, and seemed slim and out of proportion to his barrel-shaped torso. His eyes, like caves beneath an overhanging ledge, were more restless than usual, as he gazed across the basin. He rasped a heavy thumbnail across the bristle of his slablike jowl..."
