Download or read book Sunday s on the Phone to Monday written by Christine Reilly and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2017-04-18 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Royal Tenenbaums meets J. D. Salinger in this “sharply observed and bittersweet family romance with a rock ’n’ roll heart” (Elle). Claudio and Mathilde Simone, once romantic bohemians hopelessly enamored with each other, find themselves nestled in domesticity in New York, running a struggling vinyl record store and parenting three daughters as best they can: Natasha, an overachieving prodigy; sensitive Lucy, with her debilitating heart condition; and Carly, adopted from China and quietly fixated on her true origins. With prose that is as keen and illuminating as it is whimsical and luminous, debut novelist Christine Reilly tells the unusual love story of this family. Poignant and humane, Sunday’s on the Phone to Monday is a deft exploration of the tender ties that bind families together, even as they threaten to tear them apart.

Book excerpt: Connie Nixon is no stranger to making lists. In fact, she has rewritten the list of her deepest desires no fewer than forty-eight times. And each Sunday, for as long as she can remember, she’s tinkered with it. But actually doing something about her desires is a different story—until the night she comes across a box belonging to her estranged daughter…and makes a stunning discovery. It turns out that her seemingly straitlaced Jessica is part owner of one of the most successful sex toy shops in America. Shocked by her daughter’s secret life, Connie tucks her list in her back pocket and does something utterly impulsive: she hops on a plane to New York City to track down Jessica—and winds up on the wildest adventure of her life. Because with her daughter’s help, Connie’s about to let her own inner bombshell see the light of day. Now, for the first time ever, things are flying off Connie’s list. Like reconnecting with her daughter. And getting tipsy before noon. And the most startlingly extraordinary desire of all: falling in love.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Carter has written a memoir that captures the quintessential America that now seems to be slipping away from us. A real treat." --John Tebbel, author, A History of Book Publishing in the United States "Deeply moving. The book is a delight, and, of course, you write like a dream.Your introductory comments on the subject of memoirs are interesting.Congratulations on what I believe we used to call a great read, and more than that, a deeply affecting record." --Ellen Feldman, author, Lucy "Robert Carter has that rare quality in a writer whose prose is transparent: nothing apparently stands between the reader and the world of the 1930s and early 1940s. That world is portrayed as essentially an unflinchingly revealed emotional one; there is a heartbreaking account of his mother's death--an event that drives his subsequent relations." Download or read book The Evaluability Hypothesis written by Johan Brandtler and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2012-02-16 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the field of polarity is well researched, this monograph offers a new take on polarity sensitivity that both challenges and incorporates previous theories. Based primarily on Swedish data, it presents new solutions to long-standing problems, such as the non-complementary distribution of NPIs and PPIs in yes/no-questions and conditionals, long distance licensing by superordinate elements, and the occurrence of polarity items in wh-questions. It is argued that polarity sensitivity can be understood in terms of evaluability. Lacking any immediate predecessor in the literature, evaluability refers to the possibility of accepting or rejecting an utterance as true in a communicative exchange. Intriguingly, the evaluable status of a clause is shown to have syntactic correlates in Swedish, mirrored in the configuration of the C-domain. This book is of interest to scholars studying the interplay between syntax, semantics and pragmatics, particularly those working on negation and polarity.
Download or read book A Nickel Can of Pork and Beans written by Bryan Davidson and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2011-02-22 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A Nickel Can of Pork and Beans, is the autobiographical story of the life and career of Bryan Davidson told in his own humble, homespun and at times quite humorous words. Bryan Davidson enjoyed a long, illustrious career in radio. His fascination with radio began in his early teen years, just as the golden era of broadcasting began. Newly discharged from the U.S. Navy following World War II, he began as an announcer at WSON Henderson, Kentucky. The next several years found him employed in positions of announcer or manager at WIKY Evansville, Indiana, WITZ Jasper, Indiana, WPEO Peoria, Illinois and WRAY Princeton, Indiana. Eventually he and partner, Thomas Land, built, owned and managed WFIW Fairfield, Illinois, and WJBD Salem, Illinois. While he had written reams of radio commercials, this book, a record of his life, was Mr. Davidsons first attempt at narrative writing; and it chronicles his successes and his failures. His intended purpose for this memoir was to attest to his strong faith in Jesus Christ. He also hoped that his story might inspire young people to hold onto their dreams, regardless of financial hardship, temporary setbacks or discouragement. From his own experiences, he knew that dreams can be fulfilled and goals can be achieved, Life in a small Alabama coal-mining town during the Great Depression was hard as dried jerky and twice as tough. Mr. Davidsons recollections of his fathers years of working in coal mines and his mothers fierce determination to feed themselves and their only child is a tribute to the American spirit. Interlaced with humor, pathos and drama, Mr. Davidsons written words echo his distinctive radio voice. Against all odds, Bryan Davidson built and maintained a successful radio station in Salem, Illinois, one that continues to thrive and serve the community well.
