This book was released on 2017-05-16 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I have lived an incredible life. Some would even call it lucky. For me, life is Never a GAMBLE, it's Always a sure Bet. I look back over everything that I've been able to accomplish in my storied career in the Sports and Cable industries. I owe it all to one specific source. That source is Central State University a Historic Black College & University (HBCU) centered in Southern Ohio. The impact, influence, and income that was derived as a direct result of my association with that HBCU experience transformed my life. As I look back and realize the constant care, concern and cajoling my professors, administrators and staff gave me, I appreciate the support and guidance that made a difference in my life. My greatest goal was to play college basketball. Their greatest goal was for me to graduate and become a productive member of society. Both goals have been met. This book is an expression of how they were met. As I look back over my life I recognize how I excelled because of my incredible HBCU experience. I was nurtured and groomed to become successful. This is all because of my HBCU experience. I also look back at the lives of many others that had no other choice but to attend an HBCU. Today there are many other choices.... but is that true? Today's African-American youth are graduating from inner-city, suburban and rural schools that are largely segregated. Those students find themselves having difficulty matriculating through mainstream institutions of higher learning. Today more than ever there's a need for HBCU's. These are schools where black students are nurtured, supported as well as receive "tough love." HBCU's now are becoming more and more culturally diverse which reflects society today and gives these students of color an opportunity to achieve in a safe and nurturing environment. More importantly, they will be prepared to enter the workforce with confidence. Join this journey with me as I share the value and significance of Historically Black Colleges and Universities. It is my hope that you will both understand and experience why HBCU's are Never a GAMBLE and indeed they are Always a sure BET!

Book It Was Never a Gamble

Download or read book It Was Never a Gamble written by James Conrad Jr. and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2000-08-11 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It Was Never A Gamble is a true-life story of an early 1900's gambler and hustler. It chronicles the life of Jimmy James. Born in 1900 and leaving home at the age of 14, he made a living by taking advantage of other's greed. He learned early that to get ahead he might have to bend a few rules. But, in a time when the rules were few and the enforcement was often left to one's own conscious, there could be big rewards for the person with the intestinal fortitude to bend the rules. From the worn down storefront street games to the most luxurious hotels and clubs of the times, Jimmy James was able to operate freely and feel at home. He was able to mingle with the common street grifters and rub shoulders with some of the most influential people of the times as he made his way across the country. This is a story of one man's life journey through many adventures, twists and turns, ups and downs. Cards, dice, roulette, no game was safe; no game was ever a gamble. This is the story of Jimmy James, hustler and gambler.

Book The World According to Fannie Davis

Download or read book The World According to Fannie Davis written by Bridgett M. Davis and published by Little, Brown. This book was released on 2019-01-29 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As seen on the Today Show: This true story of an unforgettable mother, her devoted daughter, and their life in the Detroit numbers of the 1960s and 1970s highlights "the outstanding humanity of black America" (James McBride). In 1958, the very same year that an unknown songwriter named Berry Gordy borrowed $800 to found Motown Records, a pretty young mother from Nashville, Tennessee, borrowed $100 from her brother to run a numbers racket out of her home. That woman was Fannie Davis, Bridgett M. Davis's mother. Part bookie, part banker, mother, wife, and granddaughter of slaves, Fannie ran her numbers business for thirty-four years, doing what it took to survive in a legitimate business that just happened to be illegal. She created a loving, joyful home, sent her children to the best schools, bought them the best clothes, mothered them to the highest standard, and when the tragedy of urban life struck, soldiered on with her stated belief: "Dying is easy. Living takes guts." A daughter's moving homage to an extraordinary parent, The World According to Fannie Davis is also the suspenseful, unforgettable story about the lengths to which a mother will go to "make a way out of no way" and provide a prosperous life for her family -- and how those sacrifices resonate over time.

Book Thinking in Bets

Download or read book Thinking in Bets written by Annie Duke and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2019-05-07 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Wall Street Journal bestseller, now in paperback. Poker champion turned decision strategist Annie Duke teaches you how to get comfortable with uncertainty and make better decisions. Even the best decision doesn't yield the best outcome every time. There's always an element of luck that you can't control, and there's always information hidden from view. So the key to long-term success (and avoiding worrying yourself to death) is to think in bets: How sure am I? What are the possible ways things could turn out? What decision has the highest odds of success? Did I land in the unlucky 10% on the strategy that works 90% of the time? Or is my success attributable to dumb luck rather than great decision making? Annie Duke, a former World Series of Poker champion turned consultant, draws on examples from business, sports, politics, and (of course) poker to share tools anyone can use to embrace uncertainty and make better decisions. For most people, it's difficult to say "I'm not sure" in a world that values and, even, rewards the appearance of certainty. But professional poker players are comfortable with the fact that great decisions don't always lead to great outcomes, and bad decisions don't always lead to bad outcomes. By shifting your thinking from a need for certainty to a goal of accurately assessing what you know and what you don't, you'll be less vulnerable to reactive emotions, knee-jerk biases, and destructive habits in your decision making. You'll become more confident, calm, compassionate, and successful in the long run.
