Book excerpt: Making use of every possible contemporary source - diaries, almanacs, newspapers, advice books, government papers, even the Register of Patents - Liza Picard shows us exactly how the denizens of seventeenth-century London lived: the streets, houses, and gardens; cooking, housework, laundry, and shopping; clothes and jewelry; cosmetics and hairdressing; medicine, sex, education, hobbies, and etiquette; law and crime; religion and popular beliefs. The London of three hundred years ago is brought wonderfully (and sometimes horrifyingly) to life. In her exact and vivid descriptions of London before and after the Great Fire, the busy everyday activities, and the intellectual horizons and language of ordinary people, Liza Picard brings back to us the living echoes of our seventeenth-century ancestors.

Book Building Capitalism

Download or read book Building Capitalism written by Linda Clarke and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2011 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1992, this Routledge Revival sees the reissue of a truly original exploration of the nature of urbanization and capitalism. Linda Clarke's vital work argues that: Urbanization is a product of the social human labour engaged in building as well as a concentration of the labour force. The quality of the labour process determines the development of production. Changes to the built environment reflect changes in the production process and, in particular, the development of wage labour. To support these arguments, the author identifies a qualitatively new historical stage of capitalist building production involving a significant expansion of wage labour, and hence capital, and the transition from artisan to industrial production. Linda Clarke draws from a wide range of original material relating to the development of London from the mid-eighteenth to the early nineteenth century to provide a complete description of the development process: materials extraction, roadbuilding, housebuilding, paving, cleansing, etc; profiles of builders and contractors involved, and a picture of the new working class communities, as in Somers Town - their living conditions, population, working environment, and politics.

Book English almanacs astrology and popular medicine 1550 1700

Download or read book English almanacs astrology and popular medicine 1550 1700 written by Louise Hill-Curth and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2018-09-30 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early modern almanacs have received relatively little academic attention over the years, despite being the first true form of British mass media. While their major purpose was to provide annual information about the movements of the stars and the corresponding effects on Earth, most contained a range of other material, including advice on preventative and remedial medicine for humans and animals. Based on the most extensive research to date into the relationship between the popular press, early modern medical beliefs and practices, this study argues that these cheap, annual booklets played a major role in shaping contemporary medical beliefs and practices in early modern England. Beginning with an overview of printed vernacular medical literature, the book examines in depth the genre of almanacs, their authors, target and actual audiences. It discusses the various types of medical information and advice in almanacs, preventative and remedial medicine for humans, as well as ‘non-commercial’ and ‘commercial’ medicines promoted in almanacs, and the under-explored topic of animal health care.
