Book The Black Book and the Mob

Download or read book The Black Book and the Mob written by Ronald Farrell and published by Univ of Wisconsin Press. This book was released on 1995-09-01 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A tale of good and evil, of corruption and deceit, of prejudice, politics, and power, this compelling account scrutinizes the immensely lucrative Nevada gambling industry’s struggle to maintain legitimacy—or at least the appearance of it. Ronald A. Farrell and Carole Case tell how state regulators created the “Black Book” in the 1960s, a list of “notorious and unsavory” persons banned forever from owning, managing, or even entering casinos in the state. The regulators dramatically pursued and publicly denounced former lieutenants of Al Capone, alleged overlords of the American Mafia, nationally known professional gamblers, and major casino owners, as well as small-time bookies and hoods, reputed sports fixers, and gambling cheats. To date, thirty-eight names have been entered in the Black Book, including Sam Giancana, Anthony Spilotro, and Frank “Lefty” Rosenthal. Farrell and Case contend, however, that the denunciations were a melodrama, meant to show that the government was cleansing the city of corruption. Through the Black Book, the regulators focus public attention on “the Mob,” rather than on a multitude of competing criminal interests already in the gaming industry. The authors uncover evidence of ethnic discrimination by the regulators, including selective prosecution of Italian Americans whose notoriety fit popular Mafia stereotypes. The Black Book and the Mob records hearings of the regulatory commission and the voices of lawyers, government officials, casino owners, and the people named in the Black Book itself. This Las Vegas story is a rebuke to the gaming industry and a cautionary tale for many states and communities now weighing the legalization of casino gambling.

Book excerpt: This book should be read by everyone who sets foot in a casino --- average casino patrons, skilled players, casino employees, and anyone else. It should be required reading for police officers, regulators, other public officials, and attorneys who may represent any of the aforementioned. Bob Nersesian is an attorney who represents victims of casino wrongdoing against patrons. In an enjoyable writing style, he takes a look at the often too-cozy relationship between casinos, police, and regulators. He discusses specific cases and dispenses sound, practical advice that patrons, casinos and public officials would be wise to heed. Cases discussed include Nevada and other jurisdictions.

Book Playing the Cards that are Dealt

Download or read book Playing the Cards that are Dealt written by Robert Thomas King and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Derived from oral history interviews with the late Mead Dixon, this authoritative narrative provides previously unrecorded information about the gaming industry. Topics include boardroom maneuvering, cheating scams, "creative" financing, power plays among partners, and intense rivalries between casinos. Among the featured characters are Bill Harrah, the Houssels family, Donald Trump, Warren "Doc" Bayley, Jimmy Contratto, Jake Kozloff, Bob Maheu, and Si Redd. Dixon's career gave him an extraordinary perspective on gaming. Admitted to the Nevada bar in 1949, he became counsel to casinos and to groups launching gaming operations in Las Vegas, Reno, and Lake Tahoe. By 1957 he was the principal attorney for William F. Harrah and Harrah's Clubs, and by the late 1960s he was on the board of directors of Harrah's, the Showboat, and the Tropicana. Following Bill Harrah's death, Dixon was elected chairman of the Harrah's board, where he engineered the 1980 merger of Harrah's with Holiday Inns. Upon his retirement from Holiday, he returned to the Showboat board of directors and guided that company's successful expansion into Atlantic City. Playing the Cards That Are Dealt explores four decades of casino gaming history in the United States through the career of one of the industry's most prominent figures."--Publisher.
