Book Neutron Scattering Studies of Pretransitional Phenomena in Structural Phase Transformations

Download or read book Neutron Scattering Studies of Pretransitional Phenomena in Structural Phase Transformations written by and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Materials exhibiting structural phase transformations are well known to possess pretransitional phenomena. Below the transition temperature, T/sub c/, an order parameter appears and the pretransitional effects are associated with the fluctuations of the order parameter. Neutron scattering techniques have proved invaluable in studying the temporal and spatial dependence of these fluctuations. SrTiO3 is the prototypical example of a structural phase transformation exhibiting features observable in other transformations such as martensitic and order-disorder. The experimental evolution of the understanding of the phase transformation in SrTiO3 will be reviewed and the features observed will be shown to typify other systems.

Book Neutron Scattering Studies of Pre Transitional Effects in Solid Solid Phase Transformations

Download or read book Neutron Scattering Studies of Pre Transitional Effects in Solid Solid Phase Transformations written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neutron scattering studies have played a fundamental role in understanding solid-solid phase transformations, particularly in studying the lattice dynamical behavior associated with precursor effects. A review of the studies performed on solids exhibiting Martensitic transformations is given below. The mode softening and associated elastic diffuse scattering, previously observed in NiAl alloys, will be discussed as well as more recent work on Ni2MnGa, a system exhibiting magnetic order as well as a Martensitic transformation. Also, new results on the precursor effects in ordered and disordered FePt alloys will be presented.

Book Structural Phase Transitions II

Download or read book Structural Phase Transitions II written by K. Alex Müller and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Structural Phase Transitions II, like its predecessor (Topics in Current Physics, Vol. 23), presents selected methods and recent advances in the experimental investigation of phase transitions in solids. The two chapters in this volume deal with electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and with nuclear magnetic and nuclear quadrupole resonance (NMR-NQR). Both techniques are particularly sensitive to local properties. The chapter on EPR concentrates largely on the investigation of static properties, including mean-field behaviour, critical and multicritical phenomena, whilst NMR is shown to be a powerful tool for studying nonlinear dynamics, incommensurate transitions, and disordered systems. This book will serve as an excellent introduction to the methodology and applications of EPR and NMR-NQR for all those wishing to become acquainted with these important tools for studying structural phase transitions.

Book Neutron and X ray Scattering Studies of Premartensitic Phenomena

Download or read book Neutron and X ray Scattering Studies of Premartensitic Phenomena written by and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper discusses neutron and x-ray investigations of some metallic alloys which are known to exhibit martensitic transformations. It is shown that precursor effects are usually present in the diffuse scattering and in the phonon dispersion curves, but the transition cannot be described in terms of the soft mode picture used in the Landau and Devonshire theory to describe structural phase transitions. In addition, it is noted that it is inappropriate to look at these microstructures as incommensurate systems, but more correctly as a coherent coexistence of two phases.

Book Neutron Scattering Studies of the Structural Phase Transformation in NbO2

Download or read book Neutron Scattering Studies of the Structural Phase Transformation in NbO2 written by and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NbO2 shows an apparently second order phase transformation at T/sub c/ approximately equal to 810°C, which coincides with anomalous changes in both electrical and magnetic properties. New neutron scattering measurements are summarized and the nature of the structural distortions and the relation between the structural instabilities in the isoelectronic compounds VO2 and NbO2 are discussed.

Book Neutron Scattering

Download or read book Neutron Scattering written by G. Kostorz and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Treatise on Materials Science and Technology, Volume 15: Neutron Scattering shows how neutron scattering methods can be used to obtain important information on materials. The book discusses the general principles of neutron scattering; the techniques used in neutron crystallography; and the applications of nuclear and magnetic scattering. The text also describes the measurement of phonons, their role in phase transformations, and their behavior in the presence of crystal defects; and quasi-elastic scattering, with its special merits in the study of microscopic dynamical phenomena in solids and liquids. Special materials problems in neutron devices are also considered. Materials scientists, solid state physicists, physical chemists, and metallurgists will find the book invaluable.

Book Phase Transitions and Neutron Scattering

Download or read book Phase Transitions and Neutron Scattering written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A review is given of recent advances in neutron scattering studies of solid state physics. The author has selected the study of a structural phase transition as the best example to demonstrate the power of neutron scattering techniques. Since energy analysis is relatively easy, the dynamical aspects of a transition can be elucidated by the neutron probe. He will discuss in some detail current experiments on the 100K transition in SrTiO3, the crystal which has been the paradigm of neutron studies of phase transitions for many years. This new experiment attempts to clarify the relation between the neutron central peak, observed in energy scans, and the two length scales observed in recent x-ray diffraction studies where only scans in momentum space are possible.

Book Photoinduced Phase Transitions

Download or read book Photoinduced Phase Transitions written by K. Nasu and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2004 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new class of insulating solids was recently discovered. Whenirradiated by a few visible photons, these solids give rise to amacroscopic excited domain that has new structural and electronicorders quite different from the starting ground state. This occurrenceis called photoinduced phase transition, and this multi-authoredbook reviews recent theoretical and experimental studies of this newphenomenon.
