Book Neutron deuteron Breakup and Quasielastic Scattering

Download or read book Neutron deuteron Breakup and Quasielastic Scattering written by Alice Elisabeth Ohlson and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quasielastic scattering and deuteron breakup in the 200 MeV region is studied by impinging a pulsed neutron beam on a deuterium target at the Weapons Neutron Research facility at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center. The scattered neutrons from the d(n, np)n reaction are detected by a wall of neutron time-of-flight scintillators, and scattered protons are detected by two scintillators and a wire chamber. This setup allows for measurement of the incident neutron energy, scattered neutron energy, and scattered proton energy, as well as the scattering angle and position of the scattered neutron. The results of the experiment are compared with a Monte Carlo simulation of neutron-proton scattering, to observe the differences between two-body and three-body quasielastic collisions. The four-dimensional differential cross section for the d(n, np)n reaction is determined from the data.

Book Principles of Neutron Scattering from Condensed Matter

Download or read book Principles of Neutron Scattering from Condensed Matter written by and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2020-07-09 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neutron scattering is arguably the most powerful technique available for looking inside materials and seeing what the atoms are doing. This textbook provides a comprehensive and up-to-date account of the many different ways neutrons are being used to investigate the behaviour of atoms and molecules in bulk matter. It is written in a pedagogical style, and includes many examples and exercises. Every year, thousands of experiments are performed at neutron scattering facilities around the world, exploring phenomena in physics, chemistry, materials science, as well as in interdisciplinary areas such as biology, materials engineering, and cultural heritage. This book fulfils a need for a modern and pedagogical treatment of the principles behind the various different neutron techniques, in order to provide scientists with the essential formal tools to design their experiments and interpret the results. The book will be of particular interest to researchers using neutrons to study the atomic-scale structure and dynamics in crystalline solids, simple liquids and molecular fluids by diffraction techniques, including small-angle scattering and reflectometry, and by spectroscopic methods, ranging from conventional techniques for inelastic and quasielastic scattering to neutron spin-echo and Compton scattering. A comprehensive treatment of magnetic neutron scattering is given, including the many and diverse applications of polarized neutrons.

Book Differential Cross Section Measurement for the D n Np Reaction

Download or read book Differential Cross Section Measurement for the D n Np Reaction written by Sho Uemura and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The differential cross section for the quasielastic d(n, np) neutron-induced deuteron breakup reaction was measured as a function of incident and scattered particle energies and angles, using a liquid deuterium target at the Weapons Neutron Research (WNR) spallation neutron beam at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center at the Los Alamos National Laboratory. Cross sections were computed for the incident neutron energy ranges of 10010, 20010, and 30010 MeV. We used proton detectors covering a range of = 17 - 25 in the lab frame, and neutron detectors covering a range of = 55 - 76 in the lab frame. Experiment setup and data analysis are discussed, and preliminary results are presented for the cross section.

Book Quasielastic Neutron Scattering and Solid State Diffusion

Download or read book Quasielastic Neutron Scattering and Solid State Diffusion written by Rolf Hempelmann and published by Oxford University Press on Demand. This book was released on 2000 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quasielastic neutron scattering has made many important contributions to the atomistic elucidation of diffusion processes in solids. The aim of this book is to inform researchers in solid state physics, solid state chemistry, and inorganic materials science of the potential of quasielasticneutron scattering. The book has been written for experimentalists and contains in its first part the theoretical background on neutrons, neutron scattering, and solid state diffusion, which is essential for the proper use of quasielastic neutron scattering. This general part should be useful fornon-experts in the field of neutron scattering and diffusion as well. The second part of the book addresses the experts in this vivid field of research. It summarizes the scientific applications of quasielastic neutron scattering to special solid state materials systems, as for example to hydrogenin metals or to diffusion in solid state ionic conductors.
