Book Neutrino nucleon Scattering

Download or read book Neutrino nucleon Scattering written by and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the following, the author tries to summarize the current status of neutrino-nucleon scattering as it bears on contemporary issues regarding the spin structure of the nucleon. It is straightforward to express the electroweak current of a hadron in terms of its underlying electroweak partonic currents. The matrix elements of these currents are, of course, presently uncalculable but may be characterized by form factors extracted from experiment. When neutrinos are used as probes, there are several problems associated with carrying out the required cross section measurements. Active neutrino detectors of necessity contain nuclei more complex than hydrogen. These nuclei create additional backgrounds and create complications of interpretation that make these experiments challenging. However, given the continued demonstrated difficulty of measuring and extracting the spin structure functions, it appears that there are no easy measurements to investigate the nucleon spin structure save the earlier experiments that fixed the axial vector form factors of well-known baryon decays (neutron, lambda, etc.). With the emergence of the provocative results from the EMC group on the spin structure function of the proton, there has been renewed interest in the information contained in the cross sections for neutral current neutrino-nucleon scattering. The theoretical background for describing this process has been worked out in detail. It is presented in briefest outline below to define the terms needed to describe experimental results.

Book First Observation of Coherent Elastic Neutrino Nucleus Scattering

Download or read book First Observation of Coherent Elastic Neutrino Nucleus Scattering written by Bjorn Scholz and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-10-26 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis describes the experimental work that finally led to a successful measurement of coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering—a process proposed forty-three years ago. The experiment was performed at the Spallation Neutron Source facility, sited at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, in Tennessee. Of all known particles, neutrinos distinguish themselves for being the hardest to detect, typically requiring large multi-ton devices for the job. The process measured here involves the difficult detection of very weak signals arising from nuclear recoils (tiny neutrino-induced “kicks” to atomic nuclei), but leads to a much larger probability of neutrino interaction when compared to all other known mechanisms. As a result of this, “neutrino technologies” using miniaturized detectors (the author's was handheld and weighed only 14 kg) become a possibility. A large community of researchers plans to continue studying this process, facilitating an exploration of fundamental neutrino properties that is presently beyond the sensitivity of other methods.

Book Measurement of Neutrino Nucleon Neutral Current Elastic Scattering Cross section at SciBooNE

Download or read book Measurement of Neutrino Nucleon Neutral Current Elastic Scattering Cross section at SciBooNE written by and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this thesis, results of neutrino-nucleon neutral current (NC) elastic scattering analysis are presented. Neutrinos interact with other particles only with weak force. Measurement of cross-section for neutrino-nucleon reactions at various neutrino energy are important for the study of nucleon structure. It also provides data to be used for beam flux monitor in neutrino oscillation experiments. The cross-section for neutrino-nucleon NC elastic scattering contains the axial vector form factor G{sub A}(Q2) as well as electromagnetic form factors unlike electromagnetic interaction. G{sub A} is propotional to strange part of nucleon spin ([Delta]s) in Q2 2!0 limit. Measurement of NC elastic cross-section with smaller Q2 enables us to access [Delta]s. NC elastic cross-sections of neutrino-nucleon and antineutrino-nucleon were measured earlier by E734 experiment at Brookheaven National Laboratory (BNL) in 1987. In this experiment, cross-sections were measured in Q2> 0.4 GeV2 region. Result from this experiment was the only published data for NC elastic scattering cross-section published before our experiment. SciBooNE is an experiment for the measurement of neutrino-nucleon scattering cross-secitons using Booster Neutrino Beam (BNB) at FNAL. BNB has energy peak at 0.7 GeV. In this energy region, NC elastic scattering, charged current elastic scattering, charged current pion production, and neutral current pion production are the major reaction branches. SciBar, electromagnetic calorimeter, and Muon Range Detector are the detectors for SciBooNE. The SciBar consists of finely segmented scintillators and 14336 channels of PMTs. It has a capability to reconstruct particle track longer than 8 cm and separate proton from muons and pions using energy deposit information. Signal of NC elastic scattering is a single proton track. In [nu]p 2![nu]p process, the recoil proton is detected. On the other hand, most of [nu]n 2![nu]n is invisible because there are only neutral particles in final state, but sometimes recoil neutron is scattered by proton and recoil proton is detected. Signal of this event is also single proton track. Event selection for the single proton track events using geometrical and dE/dx information of reconstructed track is performed. After the event selection, NC elastic scattering data sample is obtained. They includes [nu]p 2![nu]p and [nu]n 2![nu]n is obtained. Absolute cross-section as a function of Q2 is evaluated from this NC elastic scattering data sample.

Book The Measurement of the Quasi elastic Neutrino nucleon Scattering Cross Section at the Tevatron

Download or read book The Measurement of the Quasi elastic Neutrino nucleon Scattering Cross Section at the Tevatron written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The quasi-elastic neutrino nucleon cross section measurement has been measured in the low energy region less than 100 GeV. The data agree well with the model proposed by C.H. Llewellyn Smith. This model predicts that the quasi-elastic cross section should be constant in the high enery region. The NuTeV experiment at Fermilab provides data which allows us to measure the quasi-elastic cross section for both neutrinos and anti-neutrinos at high energy. We find that [alpha] qe Nucleon (nu) = 0.94 " 0.03(stat.) " 0.07(syst.), and [alpha] qe Nucleon (nu-bar) = 1.12 " 0.04(stat.) " 0.10(syst.) for neutrino and anti-neutrino, respectively.

Book Neutrino Nucleus Interactions in the Few Gev Region

Download or read book Neutrino Nucleus Interactions in the Few Gev Region written by Geralyn P. Zeller and published by American Institute of Physics. This book was released on 2008-01-15 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NuInt07, the fifth in a series of international workshops, was held at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia, IL. It was the successful continuation of a series of workshops focused solely on the understanding and measurement of low energy neutrino-nucleus interactions. Neutrino cross sections in the few-GeV energy range are an important ingredient for neutrino oscillation experiments as well as being interesting in their own right. Such measurements and their accompanying theoretical calculations had not been updated for decades. The goal of this workshop series has been to remedy this situation by providing an environment where both experimentalists and theorists in nuclear and high energy physics can come together to review and discuss recent progress in neutrino-nucleus measurements and calculations.

Book Supernova Neutrino Scattering Rates Reduced by Nucleon Spin Fluctuations

Download or read book Supernova Neutrino Scattering Rates Reduced by Nucleon Spin Fluctuations written by and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 2792 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a nuclear medium, spin-dependent forces cause the nucleon spins to fluctuate with a rate \Gamma_\sigma. We have previously shown that as a consequence the effective axial-current neutrino-nucleon scattering cross section is reduced. Here, we calculate this reduction explicitly in the perturbative limit \Gamma_\sigma\ll T. By virtue of an exact sum rule of the spin-density structure function, we express the modified cross section in terms of the matrix element for neutrino-nucleon scattering in the presence of a spin-dependent nuclear potential. This representation allows for a direct comparison with and confirmation of Sawyer's related perturbative result. In a supernova core with a typical temperature T=10\, \rm MeV, the perturbative limit is relevant for densities \rho\alt10\̂, \rm g\, cm{̂-3} and thus applies around the neutrino sphere. There, the cross-section reduction is of order a few percent and thus not large; however, a new mode of energy transfer between neutrinos and nucleons is enabled which may be important for neutrino spectra formation. We derive an analytic perturbative expression for the rate of energy transfer.

Book Measurement of the Antineutrino Double Differential Charged Current Quasi Elastic Scattering Cross Section at MINERvA

Download or read book Measurement of the Antineutrino Double Differential Charged Current Quasi Elastic Scattering Cross Section at MINERvA written by Cheryl E. Patrick and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-11-15 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis represents the first double differential measurement of quasi-elastic anti-neutrino scattering in the few GeV range--a region of substantial theoretical and experimental interest as it is the kinematic region where studies of charge-parity (CP) violation in the neutrino sector most require precise understanding of the differences between anti-neutrino and neutrino scatter. This dissertation also presents total antineutrino-scintillator quasi-elastic cross sections as a function of energy, which is then compared to measurements from previous experiments. Next-generation neutrino oscillation experiments, such as DUNE and Hyper-Kamiokande, hope to measure CP violation in the lepton sector. In order to do this, they must dramatically reduce their current levels of uncertainty, particularly those due to neutrino-nucleus interaction models. As CP violation is a measure of the difference between the oscillation properties of neutrinos and antineutrinos, data about how the less-studied antineutrinos interact is especially valuable. The measurement described herewith determines the nuclear and instrumental effects that must be understood to undertake precision neutrino physics. As well as being useful to help reduce oscillation experiments' uncertainty, this data can also be used to study the prevalence of various correlation and final-state interaction effects within the nucleus. In addition to being a substantial scientific advance, this thesis also serves as an outstanding introduction to the field of experimental neutrino physics for future students.
