Book Neutralized Transport of High Intensity Beams

Download or read book Neutralized Transport of High Intensity Beams written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 3 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The NTX experiment at the Heavy Ion Fusion Virtual National Laboratory is exploring the performance of neutralized final focus systems for high perveance heavy ion beams. A converging ion beam at the exit of the final focus magnetic system is injected into a neutralized drift section. The neutralization is provided by a metal arc source and an RF plasma source. Effects of a ''plasma plug'', where electrons are extracted from a localized plasma in the upstream end of the drift section, and are then dragged along by the ion potential, as well as the ''volumetric plasma'', where neutralization is provided by the plasma laid down along the ion path, are both studied and their relative effects on the beam spot size are compared. Comparisons with 3-D PIC code predictions will also be presented.

Book An Introduction to the Physics of Intense Charged Particle Beams

Download or read book An Introduction to the Physics of Intense Charged Particle Beams written by R. Miller and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An intense charged particle beam can be characterized as an organized charged particle flow for which the effects of beam self-fields are of major importance in describing the evolution of the flow. Research employing such beams is now a rapidly growing field with important applications ranging from the development of high power sources of coherent radiation to inertial confinement fusion. Major programs have now been established at several laboratories in the United States and Great Britain, as well as in the USSR, Japan, and several Eastern and Western European nations. In addition, related research activities are being pursued at the graduate level at several universities in the US and abroad. When the author first entered this field in 1973 there was no single reference text that provided a broad survey of the important topics, yet contained sufficient detail to be of interest to the active researcher. That situation has persisted, and this book is an attempt to fill the void. As such, the text is aimed at the graduate student, or beginning researcher; however, it contains ample information to be a convenient reference source for the advanced worker.

Book Intense Pulsed Ion Beams for Fusion Applications

Download or read book Intense Pulsed Ion Beams for Fusion Applications written by Stanley Humphries (Jr.) and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject of this review paper is the field of intense pulsed ion beam generation and the potential application of the beams to fusion research. Considerable progress has been made over the past six years. The ion injectors discussed utilize the introduction of electrons into vacuum acceleration gaps in conjunction with high voltage pulsed power technology to achieve high output current. Power levels from injectors exceeding 1000 MW/cm2 have been obtained for pulse lengths on the order of 10−7 sec. The first part of the paper treats the physics and technology of intense ion beams. The second part is devoted to applications of intense ion beams in fusion research. A number of potential uses in magnetic confinement systems have been proposed.

Book Investigation on the Transport of High intensity Beams Using Particle in cell Simulations

Download or read book Investigation on the Transport of High intensity Beams Using Particle in cell Simulations written by Daniel Noll and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the transport of high-intensity hadron beams in low-energy beam lines of linear accelerators, the compensation of space charge forces by the accumulation of particles of opposite charge is an important effect, reducing the required focusing strength and potentially the emittance growth due to space charge forces. In this thesis, space charge compensation was studied by including the secondary particles in particle-in-cell simulations. For this purpose, a new electrostatic particle-in-cell code named bender was developed. The software was tested using known self-consistent solutions for an electron plasma confined in an external potential as well as for a KV distributed beam in a periodic focusing lattice. For the simulation of compensation, models for residual gas ionisation by proton and electron impact were implemented. ...

Book Physics Of Intense Charged Particle Beams In High Energy Accelerators

Download or read book Physics Of Intense Charged Particle Beams In High Energy Accelerators written by Ronald C Davidson and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2001-10-22 with total page 603 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physics of Intense Charged Particle Beams in High Energy Accelerators is a graduate-level text — complete with 75 assigned problems — which covers a broad range of topics related to the fundamental properties of collective processes and nonlinear dynamics of intense charged particle beams in periodic focusing accelerators and transport systems. The subject matter is treated systematically from first principles, using a unified theoretical approach, and the emphasis is on the development of basic concepts that illustrate the underlying physical processes in circumstances where intense self fields play a major role in determining the evolution of the system. The theoretical analysis includes the full influence of dc space charge and intense self-field effects on detailed equilibrium, stability and transport properties, and is valid over a wide range of system parameters ranging from moderate-intensity, moderate-emittance beams to very-high-intensity, low-emittance beams. This is particularly important at the high beam intensities envisioned for present and next generation accelerators, colliders and transport systems for high energy and nuclear physics applications and for heavy ion fusion. The statistical models used to describe the properties of intense charged particle beams are based on the Vlasov-Maxwell equations, the macroscopic fluid-Maxwell equations, or the Klimontovich-Maxwell equations, as appropriate, and extensive use is made of theoretical techniques developed in the description of one-component nonneutral plasmas, and multispecies electrically-neutral plasmas, as well as established techniques in accelerator physics, classical mechanics, electrodynamics and statistical physics.Physics of Intense Charged Particle Beams in High Energy Accelerators emphasizes basic physics principles, and the thorough presentation style is intended to have a lasting appeal to graduate students and researchers alike. Because of the advanced theoretical techniques developed for describing one-component charged particle systems, a useful companion volume to this book is Physics of Nonneutral Plasmas by Ronald C Davidson./a

Book Development of a Shock tube Driven Molecular Beam

Download or read book Development of a Shock tube Driven Molecular Beam written by George T. Skinner and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The preliminary development of a high intensity molecular beam, in which a small tailored interface hypersonic shock-tunnel is used as the gas source, is reported. The aim is to extend molecular beam techniques into the 1-10 e.v. per particle range by utilizing the capability of the shock tube to generate high temperatures. A 0.7 e.v. nitrogen beam was produced in the pilot apparatus. The intensity of 2.5 x 10 to the 18th power molecules 1/sq.cm./sec. and the spreading angle of 6 deg agree with a theoretical analysis which takes into account attenuation caused by scattered molecules which have been thermally accommodated at the walls of the apparatus. A modified Kantrowitz-Grey system is used to obtain the high-energy beam.
