Download or read book Neurovirology written by Richard B. Tenser and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2023-07-31 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The plethora of miscommunication and disinformation about how SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) spreads suggests a widespread misunderstanding of how viruses work. This book will focus on the interpretation of scientific and medical results, giving the reader guidance on interpreting virological data, including the concepts of 'live' versus infectious virus. The first section covers the background of virology and immunology, introducing the reader to the science of virology (using COVID-19 as an illustration) and considers the measurement of infectious disease, using polymerase chain reaction (PCR), molecular biology and the immune system. The second section looks at clinical virology and neurovirology. Taking a novel perspective on how viruses may play a role in evolution, this book discusses antivirals and how autoimmune disorders may be caused or triggered by viruses. Concise and practical, this is a key resource for those working in neurology, infectious disease and virology.

Download or read book Molecular Neurovirology written by Raymond P. Roos and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 599 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neurovirology, the study of viral infection of the ner vous system, has evolved at the interface of three of the most rapidly unfolding fields of investigation-neurobiology, vi rology, and immunology. In all three, increasing knowledge about the molecular structure of surface receptors, how in tracellular messages are transmitted, and how diversity is regulated genetically is provided, along with the techniques of molecular biology. This promises to give us knowledge not only about the process of infection and the complex host and viral determinants of neuroinvasiveness and neurovirulence, but eventually it will provide the background from which to engineer vaccines and to devise novel therapeutic agents. Animal virology and molecular biology developed quite independently from different origins. Animal virology was originally the province of the pathologists, and by clinical observation and histological preparations, they tried to ex plain the incubation period, the pathways of virus spread, and the mechanisms of disease. Molecular virology grew out of biochemistry, particularly through studies of bacterio phage, with emphasis on the physical and chemical structure of viruses and the sequences of biochemical events during the replicative cycle in cells.

Book HIV and Psychiatry

  • Author : John A. Joska
  • Publisher : John Wiley & Sons
  • Release : 2014-02-26
  • ISBN : 1118339525
  • Pages : 233 pages

Download or read book HIV and Psychiatry written by John A. Joska and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-02-26 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mental health and HIV/AIDS are closely interlinked. Mental disorders, including substance-use disorders, are associated with increased risk of HIV infection and affect adherence to and efficacy of antiretroviral treatments. Conversely, HIV infection can increase risk for neuropsychiatric complications including stress, mood, and neurocognitive disorders. This book provides clinicians with a comprehensive evidenced-based and practical approach to the management of patients with HIV infection and co-morbid mental disorders. It provides up-to-date and clear overviews of current clinical issues, as well as the relevant basic science. Information and data from studies of different HIV groups (eg men who have sex with men) make the text relevant to a broad spectrum of clinicians, including those working with low socioeconomic status groups in high income countries and those working in the developing world. The book uses the popular format of the World Psychiatric Association’s Evidence and Experience series. Review chapters summarize the evidence on the epidemiology, pathogenesis and clinical aspects of mental disorders in HIV,and interventions (both psychotherapy and psychopharmacology including drug-drug interactions). These are complemented by commentaries addressing particular facets of each topic and providing insight gained from clinical experience. Psychiatrists, psychologists and all mental health staff working with HIV-infected patients will find this book of great benefit.
