Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, I have selected topics that are representative of neuroscience inquiry, retaining brief references to a larger context that includes the study of neurology, anthropology, paleontology, computer science and philosophy. There have been several attempts to develop a "theory" of brain function that incorporates a large collection of observations, experimental results and a growing understanding of the innate features of human nature. I doubt that a single theory is feasible and suggest that the goal is integration of knowledge from diverse disciplines into a comprehensive understanding of who we are and why we are the way we are.

Book Neurology and Clinical Neuroscience

Download or read book Neurology and Clinical Neuroscience written by Roger Brumback and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States Congress has designated the 1990s as the "Decade of the Brain" in recognition of the major importance of neurology and the other neurosciences in the health and well-being of Americans. It has been suggested that as many as 20% of all patients seeking medical treatment have neurologic problems, either as the presenting complaint or as an associated condition complicating the primary illness. Thus, it is fitting that Springer-Verlag should acknowledge the prominence of this medical specialty area by devoting an entire volume of the Oklahoma Notes series to neurology and clinical neuroscience. Of course, this text is an outline overview and does not attempt to provide ency clopedic coverage of neurology (the student desiring a comprehensive review of the field may wish to seek in the library the 60 + volumes in the series Handbook of Clinical Neurology edited by Pierre J. Vinken and George W. Bruyn). However, the information selected for inclusion in this volume of the Oklahoma Notes series remains true to the goal of the whole series-only materials vital in both the general clinical practice of medicine and to answer questions on the all-important United States Medical Licensing Examination have been incorporated in the text. Roger A. Brumback, M.D.

Book The Brain Supremacy Notes from the frontiers of neuroscience

Download or read book The Brain Supremacy Notes from the frontiers of neuroscience written by Kathleen Taylor and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2012-10-25 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a world full of science, the balance of power between sciences is changing. Advances in physics, chemistry, and other natural sciences have given us extraordinary control over our world. Now the younger sciences of brain and mind are applying the scientific method not only to our environments, but to us. In recent years funding and effort poured into brain research. We are entering the era of the brain supremacy. What will the new science mean for us, as individuals, consumers, parents and citizens? Should we be excited, or alarmed, by the remarkable promises we read about in the media - promises of drugs that can boost our brain power, ever more subtle marketing techniques, even machines that can read minds? What is the neuroscience behind these claims, and how do scientists look inside living human brains to get their astonishing results? The Brain Supremacy is a lucid and rational guide to this exciting new world. Using recent examples from the scientific literature and the media, it explores the science behind the hype, revealing how techniques like fMRI actually work and what claims about using them for mindreading really mean. The implications of this amazingly powerful new research are clearly and entertainingly presented. Looking to the future, the book sets current neuroscience in its social and ethical context,as an increasingly important influence on how all of us live our lives.

Download or read book Minding the City written by Harrison Fraker and published by Oro Editions. This book was released on 2020-10 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book calls attention to the public space of cities. It proposes that the environmental performance of public space is underdeveloped, and is primed to play a more integrated role in combatting the urgency of climate change, while also creating a more meaningful experience of the city. The approach is influenced by recent insights from neuroscience that are generating a growing body of evidence for the underlying bodily basis of mind and meaning imply a reformulation of urban design theory. Minding the City is an effort to refocus the subject of urban design on the tangible and visceral experience of public space, to remind urban designers that our concept of the city is grounded in bodily experience. It discusses emerging insights from neuroscience and their potential impact on urban design in detail, not as a formula for design, but to bring awareness, a new sensibility to the design process. It uses a set of case studies to illustrate how the insights from neuroscience are operative in how we experience and value the built environment. It finishes with an exploration of the sensory and aesthetic potential of sustainable systems and then illustrates, through a series of urban design studies, how they might be used to create better environmental performance while creating more meaningful, even poetic urban spaces.

Book Basic Molecular Protocols in Neuroscience Tips Tricks and Pitfalls

Download or read book Basic Molecular Protocols in Neuroscience Tips Tricks and Pitfalls written by John T. Corthell and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-04-16 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Basic Neuroscience Protocols: Tips, Tricks, and Pitfalls contains explanatory sections that describe the techniques and what each technique really tells the researcher on a scientific level. These explanations describe relevant controls, troubleshooting, and reaction components for some of the most widely used neuroscience protocols that remain difficult for many neuroscientists to implement successfully. Having this additional information will help researchers ensure that their experiments work the first time, and will also minimize the time spent working on a technique only to discover that the problem was them, and not their materials. - Describes techniques in very specific detail with step-by-step instructions, giving researchers in-depth understanding - Offers many details not present in other protocol books - Describes relevant controls for each technique and what those controls mean - Chapters include references (key articles, books, protocols) for additional study - Describes both the techniques and the habits necessary to get quality results, such as aseptic technique, aliquoting, and general laboratory rules

Chapter 3 reviews the theory of coupled neural oscillators observed throughout the nervous systems at all levels; it describes how oscillations arise, what pattern they take, and how they depend on excitory or inhibitory synaptic connections. Chapter 4 specializes to one particular neuronal system, namely, the auditory system. It includes a self-contained introduction, from the anatomy and physiology of the inner ear to the neuronal network that connects the hair cells to the cortex, and describes various models of subsystems.
