Book The Embryologic Basis of Craniofacial Structure

Download or read book The Embryologic Basis of Craniofacial Structure written by Michael H. Carstens and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-10-29 with total page 1756 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on the anatomy of the head and neck, this book begins at the cellular level of development, detailing bone, muscle, blood supply, and innervation along the way. It illustrates the origin of each tissue structure to aid in making prognoses beyond the surface deformation, offering typical issues seen in the craniofacial region, for example. Written by a pediatric Craniofacial plastic surgeon and intended for clinicians and residents in the areas of plastic surgery, ENT, maxillofacial surgery, and orthodontistry, this book is the first of its kind to focus so intently on evolution of the craniofacial structure. It is neatly broken up into two distinct sections. The first section is meant for readers to gain a fundamental understanding of the development of craniofacial structures, from embryo onward, relying on the concepts of the Neuromeric Theory. The chapters in the first section of the book trace the development of the typical patient. The second section offers clinical examples of how the Neuromeric Theory can be used to repair or reconstruct various regions of the head and neck. Craniofacial clefts, including cleft lip and palate, ocular hypotelorism, anencephaly, craniosynostosis and more are detailed. Understanding the formation of the tissue structures involved in any given genetic deformation or anomaly enables the clinician to provide a more satisfying outcome for the patient, both structurally and aesthetically. New and current therapeutic options are explored and supported through original illustrations and photographs to aid in determining the best treatment for each individual patient. Embryological Principles of Craniofacial Structure bridges the gap between introductory books on the basic anatomy of the head and neck and the detailed understanding required for corrective surgery of craniofacial defects.

Book Mesenchymal Epithelial Interactions in Neural Development

Download or read book Mesenchymal Epithelial Interactions in Neural Development written by Joachim R. Wolff and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is based on the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on "Mesenchymal-Epithelial Interactions in Neural Development" which was held in Berlin during March 1986. The idea that it may be the time for this workshop arose from a discussion among the organizers who met at a conference in Innsbruck. During the twenties, Spemann demonstrated that, in vertebrates, the formation of neuroepithelium depends on the induction by specific mesodermal derivatives. This was about the first time that mesenchymal-epithelial interactions had been recognized as an important mechanism in the development of an epithelial organ. Since then two things had become clear: 1) The identity and role of molecules, elaborated at mesenchymal-neuroepithelial interfaces had been partially elucidated in spinal cord and peripheral nerve ontogeny but, until recently, had been ignored in studies on the development of the brain. 2) In many-non-neural epithelia, the surrounding mesenchyme regulates such fundamental developmental steps as, for example, cell proliferation, morphogenesis and cell differentia tion, and there is no reason to exclude similar influences and interactions from brain development. It seemed to us that the importance and implications of many of these findings had not been appreciated by many developmental neurobiologists and that an attempt should be made to initiate discussions and exchange of ideas among different groups of scientists involved in extracellular matrix (ECM) research. This turned out to be a formidable task because of the great diversity of disciplines contributing findings to this active field.

Book Somites in Developing Embryos

Download or read book Somites in Developing Embryos written by Ruth Bellairs and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Somite development is a unique and important topic; unique because somitic mesoderm is the first tissue to become segmented, important because the somites - once established - exert a profound influence on other seg mental structures which form later. Somite development is of interest at a number of levels. In one aspect, demarcation of a specific number of somites and size regulation, it is a particularly intriguing example of embryonic pattern formation, 'especially in vew of its possible relation to homoeobox-controlled segmentation in insects. At another level, somite development has long been studied by compara tive anatomists, but only recently has new light been thrown on such sub jects as segmentation of the head, proposed in the 18th century by Goethe and now a live issue for developmental biologists. Somit es are simple when they first appear, but very complex structures arise from them. These include the vertebrae and the axial and other muscles and consequently there is a wealth of morphogenetic problems to be explored. Sometimes their morphogenesis is disturbed, by genetic or environ mental factors, and there are many clinical conditions which arise as a result.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A medical student asks the teacher why the brains hemispheres control opposite sides of the body. In this short book, the teacher engages the medical student, all neuroscience students, and anyone interested in the structure of brains in humans and other animals. Why does the left brain refer to the right side of the body and the right brain to the left side? Why are brains wired as they are?
