Book Tattoos and body modifications in antiquity proceedings of the sessions at the EAA annual meetings in The Hague and Oslo 2010 11

Download or read book Tattoos and body modifications in antiquity proceedings of the sessions at the EAA annual meetings in The Hague and Oslo 2010 11 written by European Association of Archaeologists. Annual Meeting and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "From Ötzi the Iceman to today's full-sleeved and pierced urbanite, it seems that body modification has always formed an integral part of the human animal's relationship to its body. Some adornments are temporary or purely situational, such as particular body paints, jewelry or hair treatments, while others--such as tattoos--are quite permanent and, when we are very lucky, preserved in the archaeological record. The papers presented in this volume result from two thematic sessions on Tattoos and Body Modifications in Antiquity organized during the annual meetings of the European Association of Archaeologists (EAA) in The Hague and Oslo in 2010/11. They deal with a variety of topics, from the Pacific to the American continents and to Eurasia, including early evidences of tattooing and methods of detection, tattoo implements and experiments, as well as iconographic contexts and cultural meanings of tattoos and other body modifications, such as cranial deformations or cosmetic applications. Many new finds are discussed, and presented for the first time to an English speaking audience."--P. 4 of cover.

Book Cities Mountains and Being Modern in fin de si cle England and Germany

Download or read book Cities Mountains and Being Modern in fin de si cle England and Germany written by Ben Anderson and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-01-02 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first transnational history of rambling and mountaineering. Focussing on the critical turn-of-the-century era, it offers new insights into alpine development, attitudes to danger, cultures of time, internationalism and domesticity in the outdoors. It charts an emerging group of mass tourist activities, and argues that these thousands of walkers and climbers can only be understood within the context of the urban cultures from which most of them came. In doing so, it offers a fresh perspective on the relationship of alpinists and countryside enthusiasts to the modern world. Instead of an escape from or rejection of modernity, it finds that upland trampers and climbers contested what it meant to be modern, used those modern identities to make political claims on rural space and rural people, and sought to define what a more modern future society should be like.

Book Language Contact and Lexical Enrichment in Israeli Hebrew

Download or read book Language Contact and Lexical Enrichment in Israeli Hebrew written by G. Zuckermann and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-11-04 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Israeli Hebrew is a spoken language, 'reinvented' over the last century. It has responded to the new social and technological demands of globalization with a vigorously developing multisourced lexicon, enriched by foreign language contact. In this detailed and rigorous study, the author provides a principled classification of neologisms, their semantic fields and the roles of source languages, along with a sociolinguistic study of the attitudes of 'purists' and ordinary native speakers in the tension between linguistic creativity and the preservation of a distinct language identity.

Book Values of Happiness

Download or read book Values of Happiness written by Iza Kavedzija and published by . This book was released on 2016-12-15 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How people conceive of happiness reveals much about who they are and the values they hold dear. Drawing on ethnographic insights from diverse field sites around the world, this book offers a unique window onto the ways in which people grapple with fundamental questions about how to live and what it means to be human. Developing a distinctly anthropological approach concerned less with gauging how happy people are than with how happiness figures as an idea, mood, and motive in everyday life, the book explores how people strive to live well within challenging or even hostile circumstances. The contributors explore how happiness intersects with dominant social values as well as an array of aims and aspirations that are potentially conflicting, demonstrating that not every kind of happiness is seen as a worthwhile aim or evaluated in positive moral terms. In tracing this link between different conceptions of happiness and their evaluations, the book engages some of the most fundamental questions concerning human happiness: What is it and how is it achieved? Is happiness everywhere a paramount value or aim in life? How does it relate to other ideas of the good? What role does happiness play in orienting peoples' desires and life choices? Taking these questions seriously, the book draws together considerations of meaning, values, and affect, while recognizing the diversity of human ends.

Book excerpt: The Krampus, a folkloric devil associated with St. Nicholas in Alpine Austria and Germany, has been embraced by the American counterculture and is lately skewing mainstream. Book Human Landscapes in Classical Antiquity

Download or read book Human Landscapes in Classical Antiquity written by John Salmon and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-02-01 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human Landscapes in Classical Antiquity shows how today's environmental and ecological concerns can help illuminate our study of the ancient world. The contributors consider how the Greeks and Romans perceived their natural world, and how their perceptions affected society. The effects of human settlement and cultivation on the landscape are considered, as well as the representation of landscape in Attic drama. Various aspects of farming, such as the use of terraces and the significance of olive growing are examined. The uncultivated landscape was also important: hunting was a key social ritual for Greek and hellenistic elites, and 'wild' places were not wastelands but played an essential economic role. The Romans' attempts to control their environment are analyzed. This volume shows how Greeks and Romans worked hand in hand with their natural environment and not against it. It represents an outstanding collaboration between the disciplines of history and archaeology.

Book Lifestyle Migration

Download or read book Lifestyle Migration written by Michaela Benson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-06 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Relatively affluent individuals from various corners of the globe are increasingly choosing to migrate, spurred on by the promise of a better and more fulfilling way of life within their destination. Despite its increasing scale, migration academics have yet to consolidate and establish lifestyle migration as a subfield of theoretical enquiry, until now. This volume offers a dynamic and holistic analysis of contemporary lifestyle migrations, exploring the expectations and aspirations which inform and drive migration alongside the realities of life within the destination. It also recognizes the structural conditions (and constraints) which frame lifestyle migration, laying the groundwork for further intellectual enquiry. Through rich empirical case studies this volume addresses this important and increasingly common form of migration in a manner that will interest scholars of mobility, migration, lifestyle and culture across the social sciences.
