Download or read book Probabilistic Graphical Models written by Daphne Koller and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2009-07-31 with total page 1270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A general framework for constructing and using probabilistic models of complex systems that would enable a computer to use available information for making decisions. Most tasks require a person or an automated system to reason—to reach conclusions based on available information. The framework of probabilistic graphical models, presented in this book, provides a general approach for this task. The approach is model-based, allowing interpretable models to be constructed and then manipulated by reasoning algorithms. These models can also be learned automatically from data, allowing the approach to be used in cases where manually constructing a model is difficult or even impossible. Because uncertainty is an inescapable aspect of most real-world applications, the book focuses on probabilistic models, which make the uncertainty explicit and provide models that are more faithful to reality. Probabilistic Graphical Models discusses a variety of models, spanning Bayesian networks, undirected Markov networks, discrete and continuous models, and extensions to deal with dynamical systems and relational data. For each class of models, the text describes the three fundamental cornerstones: representation, inference, and learning, presenting both basic concepts and advanced techniques. Finally, the book considers the use of the proposed framework for causal reasoning and decision making under uncertainty. The main text in each chapter provides the detailed technical development of the key ideas. Most chapters also include boxes with additional material: skill boxes, which describe techniques; case study boxes, which discuss empirical cases related to the approach described in the text, including applications in computer vision, robotics, natural language understanding, and computational biology; and concept boxes, which present significant concepts drawn from the material in the chapter. Instructors (and readers) can group chapters in various combinations, from core topics to more technically advanced material, to suit their particular needs.

Download or read book Network Security Metrics written by Lingyu Wang and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-11-15 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines different aspects of network security metrics and their application to enterprise networks. One of the most pertinent issues in securing mission-critical computing networks is the lack of effective security metrics which this book discusses in detail. Since “you cannot improve what you cannot measure”, a network security metric is essential to evaluating the relative effectiveness of potential network security solutions. The authors start by examining the limitations of existing solutions and standards on security metrics, such as CVSS and attack surface, which typically focus on known vulnerabilities in individual software products or systems. The first few chapters of this book describe different approaches to fusing individual metric values obtained from CVSS scores into an overall measure of network security using attack graphs. Since CVSS scores are only available for previously known vulnerabilities, such approaches do not consider the threat of unknown attacks exploiting the so-called zero day vulnerabilities. Therefore, several chapters of this book are dedicated to develop network security metrics especially designed for dealing with zero day attacks where the challenge is that little or no prior knowledge is available about the exploited vulnerabilities, and thus most existing methodologies for designing security metrics are no longer effective. Finally, the authors examine several issues on the application of network security metrics at the enterprise level. Specifically, a chapter presents a suite of security metrics organized along several dimensions for measuring and visualizing different aspects of the enterprise cyber security risk, and the last chapter presents a novel metric for measuring the operational effectiveness of the cyber security operations center (CSOC). Security researchers who work on network security or security analytics related areas seeking new research topics, as well as security practitioners including network administrators and security architects who are looking for state of the art approaches to hardening their networks, will find this book helpful as a reference. Advanced-level students studying computer science and engineering will find this book useful as a secondary text.

Download or read book Big Data Analytics in Cybersecurity written by Onur Savas and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-09-18 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Big data is presenting challenges to cybersecurity. For an example, the Internet of Things (IoT) will reportedly soon generate a staggering 400 zettabytes (ZB) of data a year. Self-driving cars are predicted to churn out 4000 GB of data per hour of driving. Big data analytics, as an emerging analytical technology, offers the capability to collect, store, process, and visualize these vast amounts of data. Big Data Analytics in Cybersecurity examines security challenges surrounding big data and provides actionable insights that can be used to improve the current practices of network operators and administrators. Applying big data analytics in cybersecurity is critical. By exploiting data from the networks and computers, analysts can discover useful network information from data. Decision makers can make more informative decisions by using this analysis, including what actions need to be performed, and improvement recommendations to policies, guidelines, procedures, tools, and other aspects of the network processes. Bringing together experts from academia, government laboratories, and industry, the book provides insight to both new and more experienced security professionals, as well as data analytics professionals who have varying levels of cybersecurity expertise. It covers a wide range of topics in cybersecurity, which include: Network forensics Threat analysis Vulnerability assessment Visualization Cyber training. In addition, emerging security domains such as the IoT, cloud computing, fog computing, mobile computing, and cyber-social networks are examined. The book first focuses on how big data analytics can be used in different aspects of cybersecurity including network forensics, root-cause analysis, and security training. Next it discusses big data challenges and solutions in such emerging cybersecurity domains as fog computing, IoT, and mobile app security. The book concludes by presenting the tools and datasets for future cybersecurity research.
