Book excerpt: Delay is a fundamental problem of data communication and networks, a problem that is not usually addressed in classical coding, information or networking theory. We focus on the general problem of delay challenged networks. This delay challenge may be related to different reasons, for example, 1) large latency, which can affect the performance of the system in delay, throughput or energy efficiency, 2) half-duplex constraints on the nodes, which precludes a node to receive and transmit at the same time, and/or 3) application-level requirements for reliable, fast and efficient dissemination of information. We consider three main problems of study and the role of network coding on solving these problems. The first is related to the problem of reliable communication in time-division duplexing channels, also known as half-duplex channels, in the presence of large latency. In large latency channels, feedback about received packets may lag considerably the transmission of the original packets, limiting the feedback's usefulness. Moreover, the time duplex constraints may entail that receiving feedback may be costly. In this work, we consider tailoring feedback and (network) coding jointly in such settings to reduce the mean delay for successful in order reception of packets. We find that, in certain applications, judicious choices provide results that are close to those that would be obtained with a full-duplex system. The second part of this thesis studies the problem of data dissemination in arbitrary networks. In particular, we study the problem of minimizing the delay incurred in disseminating a finite number of data packets. We show that the optimal solution to the problem can be thought of as a scheduling problem, which is hard to solve. Thus, we consider the use of a greedy linear network coding algorithm that only takes into account the current state of the system to make a decision. The proposed algorithm tries to maximize the impact on the network at each slot, i.e., maximize the number of nodes that will benefit from the coded packet sent by each active transmitter. We show that our scheme is considerably better, in terms of the number of slots to complete transmission, than schemes that choose the node with more information as the transmitter The third part of this work studies the case of underwater acoustic networks as an example of delay challenged networks. We consider the use of network coding under two different lights. First, as a means to obtain a lower bound on the transmission power of multicast connections in underwater networks. Second, to develop practical schemes useful in such networks. Finally, we study upper bounds on the transport capacity of underwater acoustic networks under unicast connections. We show that the amount of information that can be exchanged by each source-destination pair in underwater acoustic networks goes to zero as the number of nodes n goes to infinity. This occurs at least at a rate n-1/Qe-Wo(O(n-k)) where Wo represents the branch zero of the Lambert W function, and a path loss exponent of a. Note that typical values of the path loss exponent are a E [1, 2] for underwater acoustic networks. This is significantly different to the a> 2 of radio wireless applications.

Coding packets is especially beneficial in a wireless environment where the demand for radio spectrum is high. However, to fully realize the benefits of network coding two challenging issues that must be addressed are: (1) Guaranteeing separation of coded packets at the destination, and (2) Mitigating the extra coding/decoding delay. If the destination has all the needed packets to decode a coded packet, then separation failure can be averted. If the scheduling algorithm considers the arrival time of coding pairs, then the extra delay can be mitigated. In this paper, we develop a network coding method to address these (decoding and latency) issues for multi-source multi-destination unicast and multicast sessions. We use linear programming to find the most efficient coding design solution with guaranteed decodability. To reduce network delay, we develop a scheduling algorithm to minimize the extra coding/decoding delay. Our coding design method and scheduling algorithm are validated through experiments. Book excerpt: A shift in the way the Internet is accessed and the type of traffic generated has been underway for the last decade and will continue into the foreseeable future. Furthermore, these shifts are expected to place considerable strain on the ability of existing transport layer protocols to meet users' quality of service demands. Internet traffic is being generated by an increasing number of inexpensive, low-power, mobile devices resulting in an increased incidence of packet losses, unreliable network connections, and path instability. In addition, the majority of traffic, such as streaming video, is fast becoming more delay sensitive driving changes throughout the network. This thesis explores methods to improve end-to-end performance through the use of network and erasure coding techniques applied at the transport layer. These techniques will help provide path diversity and connection resiliency in the form of multi-path transport, in addition to increasing throughput and decreasing in-order delivery delay in the presence of network disruptions and packet erasures. The potential gains of a network coded transport layer are first introduced using two protocols: Coded TCP (CTCP) and Multi-Path TCP with Network Coding (MPTCP/NC). These two approaches help illustrate different methods to implement network coding to help overcome packet losses and diversify network connections over multiple paths. Analytic and experimental results are provided that show a network coded transport layer can significantly improve throughput in challenged networks; but more importantly, these results hint at the possible gains for application layer quality of service. Observing the performance of HTTP requests and streaming video, the potential to decrease the in-order delivery delay is highlighted. Based off of the observations outlined above, the second half of the thesis explores different code constructions that reduce in-order delivery delay in multiple path networks. A generation-based systematic code construction, similar to the one used in CTCP, is modeled and analyzed. Of particular note is the inherent trade-off between increasing the generation size to reduce the probability of decode errors resulting in retransmissions and keeping the generation size small enough so that coding delay is minimized. Furthermore, the trade-off between delay and efficiency is explored to help quantify the cost of reducing delay so that a user's quality of service constraint is met. Finally, a multiple path streaming code construction that removes the artificial constraints imposed by partitioning packets into generations is explored. Comparisons between the two constructions help highlight the importance of feedback in reducing delay, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of one type of code construction over the other.
