This book was released on 2018-02-28 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book seeks to launch a new research agenda for the historiography of Dutch foreign relations during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It does so in two important ways. First, it broadens the analytical perspective to include a variety of non-state actors beyond politicians and diplomats. Second, it focuses on the transnational connections that shaped the foreign relations of the Netherlands, emphasizing the effects of (post-) colonialism and internationalism. Furthermore, this essay collection highlights not only the key roles played by Dutch actors on the international scene, but also serves as an important point of comparison for the activities of their counterparts in other small states.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dutch East Indies Red Cross (NIRK) took action in 1873 when the Aceh War broke out, which lasted several decades. In this war the organization’s neutrality was tested, but it turned out not to be an issue. Neutrality was a concept for European wars between “civilized” countries, not applicable in colonial wars. As a consequence, aid was tailored to the needs of the Dutch East Indian Army. This also showed itself in a statutory change making aid not only possible during “war”’ but also in case of “uprising.” After the war ended several decades of “peace”—if peace is a proper term in colonial circumstances—followed. They were used to be prepared in case of an attack by a foreign enemy. For this “peace-work,” societal work of the Red Cross, was deemed important. This means that it was not an aim in itself, but seen as practice for the war task. It also had to avoid the Red Cross becoming invisible and lose popularity, for only with enough (wo)men active the war task could be fulfilled. When war came, preparation turned out to have been in vain. Japan quickly conquered the archipelago. It forbade the organization only making use of some local branches when this came in handy. However, it proved not to be the end of the NIRK. When after the war independence was declared by Indonesian nationalists, the Netherlands send an army “to restore law and order.” In the war that followed, Red Cross-work became part of military carrot-and-stick strategy, trying to get the population back on Dutch side, and hoping that patients would inform the doctor with military information. The Red Cross not only had a humanitarian but a national task to fulfill.

Download or read book The Failure of a Liberal Colonial Policy written by Daniel Wilco van Welderen Rengers and published by Springer. This book was released on 1947 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reaspns why the period following the English interregnum in the Netherlands Indies and preceding the establishment of the Compulsory Cultivation system has been chosen as the sub ject of this thesis are the following: 1. Until recently this period, which is of the greatest importance if one desires to know why the Compulsory Cultivation system was introduced, has been rather neglected and treated according to preconceived ideas. Because of that, a wrong interpretation has been given to the attempts to establish a liberal colonial policy. In the light of new evidence, we hope to arrive at a more correct evaluation of the principles, which governed Dutch colo nial policy during that period. 2. By studying this period and especially the attempts to align the colonial policy with the new principles of liberalism, we hope to find some general principles which may be of value for a better understanding of the problems which confront the Dutch at present in the Indies. Regardless of the intrinsic value of the new liberal principles in colonial policy, it can be easily understood that their success or failure depended very much on a correct evaluation of the impact which previous policies had had on the Indonesian society.
