Book Nesting Ecology of Canada Geese in the Hudson Bay Lowlands of Ontario

Download or read book Nesting Ecology of Canada Geese in the Hudson Bay Lowlands of Ontario written by Dennis G. Raveling and published by [Toronto, Ont.] : Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources. This book was released on 1977 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Report is in two major sections: nesting ecology and population limitations. Objectives were to examine apparent optimum and accomplished reproductive rates, habitat preferences, and density and sparing of nests in relation to the regulation of population size. The nesting ecology was also examined to provide insight into the factors limiting goose numbers.

Book Nesting Ecology of Eastern Prairie Population Canada Geese

Download or read book Nesting Ecology of Eastern Prairie Population Canada Geese written by Scott Edward Walter and published by Ann Arbor, Mich. : University Microfilms International. This book was released on 1999 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Successful management of Canada geese (Branta canadensis) requires an understanding of the factors which govern annual variation in reproductive success. We examined variation in nesting phenology, clutch size, nest survival, partial predation, egg size, and nest density for Eastern Prairie Population (EPP) Canada geese using data collected from 3 study areas in northern Manitoba from 1976-1996. The timing of nest initiation varied among years, and this variation was largely related to local weather conditions during the month of May. Mean clutch size declined with later annual nesting phenology, suggesting that delayed nesting results in higher energetic demands and reduced endogenous reserves for EPP geese. The relation between clutch size and relative nest initiation date within years was not linear, with the largest clutches being produced near the midpoint of initiation, and this relation was likely driven by a reduced allotment of nutrient reserves to egg production by early-nes.

Book A Radio Telemetry Study of the Incubation Behavior and Egg Temperatures of the Canada Goose Branta Canadensis Interior in the Hudson Bay Lowlands

Download or read book A Radio Telemetry Study of the Incubation Behavior and Egg Temperatures of the Canada Goose Branta Canadensis Interior in the Hudson Bay Lowlands written by Gordon Bruce Stenhouse and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study was conducted to investigate the incubation behavior of female Canada geese, as well as to determine the care provided to the eggs during undisturbed incubation. Contradictory or no data exists on several facets of incubation in the Canada goose. The principle reason for this problem is the methodological difficulties involved in trying to obtain data in the field without distubing the nesting females. During the spring of 1979 five Canada goose (Branta canadensis interior) nests were studied on the Hudson Bay Lowlands in northern Manitoba... Data on environmental factors was gathered during this study to determine if they exerted any influence or incubation behavior... Behavioral data indicated that there were five readily distinguishable postures seen while the female was incubating... Nest attendance for the successful nests averaged 95.03% over the entire incubation period... There was a significant effect of stage of incubation on all three egg temperatures, but only a small percentage of observed variance was accounted for by the stage of incubation... The data on egg turning did not support previous research which stated that egg turning was directly related to the weight characteristics of the eggs. The present study showed a great deal of variation in the number of turns of each study egg received... The results indicate that incubating female Canada geese have a high degree of nest attentiveness, provide a relatively stable thermal and physical environment for their eggs, and feed little over the course of incubation. These results suggest that the physical condition of nesting female geese plays an important role in determining nesting success.
