  • Pages : 335 pages

Download or read book Over My Dead Body written by Greg Melville and published by Abrams. This book was released on 2022-10-04 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Journalist Greg Melville’s Over My Dead Body isan “astonishing . . . fascinating . . . powerful” (New York Times Book Review) tour through the history of US cemeteries that explores how, where, and why we bury our dead. “You hold in your hands a treasure map, a gentle, sly, and poignant presence leading us to places in America and in our lives that have been hiding in plain sight. This tale is about cemeteries, but it’s really about how beautiful is life.” —#1 New York Times bestselling author Doug Stanton The summer before his senior year in college, Greg Melville worked at the cemetery in his hometown, and thanks to hour upon hour of pushing a mower over the grassy acres, he came to realize what a rich story the place told of his town and its history. Thus was born Melville’s lifelong curiosity with how, where, and why we bury and commemorate our dead. Melville’s Over My Dead Body is a lively (pun intended) and wide-ranging history of cemeteries, places that have mirrored the passing eras in history but also have shaped it. Cemeteries have given birth to landscape architecture and famous parks, as well as influenced architectural styles. They’ve inspired and motivated some of our greatest poets and authors—Emerson, Whitman, Dickinson. They’ve been used as political tools to shift the country’s discourse and as important symbols of the United States’ ambition and reach. But they are changing and fading. Embalming and burial is incredibly toxic, and while cremations have just recently surpassed burials in popularity, they’re not great for the environment either. Over My Dead Body explores everything about cemeteries—history, sustainability, land use, and more—and what it really means to memorialize. Includes Black-and-White Photographs Locales visited in Over My Dead Body Shawsheen Cemetery – Bedford, Massachusetts; the 1607 burial ground – Historic Jamestowne, Virginia; Burial Hill – Plymouth, Massachusetts; Colonial Jewish Burial Ground – Newport, Rhode Island; Monticello’s African American graveyard – Charlottesville, Virginia; Mount Auburn Cemetery – Cambridge, Massachusetts; Green-Wood Cemetery – Brooklyn, New York; Laurel Grove Cemetery – Savannah, Georgia; Sleepy Hollow Cemetery – Concord, Massachusetts; Central Park – New York, New York; Gettysburg National Cemetery – Gettysburg, Pennsylvania; Arlington National Cemetery – Arlington, Virginia; Woodlawn Cemetery – Bronx, New York; Boothill Graveyard – Tombstone, Arizona; Forest Lawn – Glenwood, California; the Chapel of the Chimes – Oakland, California; Hollywood Forever Cemetery – Los Angeles, California; West Laurel Hill’s Nature’s Sanctuary – Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Book The Vital Dead

    Book Details:
  • Author : Alison Bell
  • Publisher : Univ. of Tennessee Press
  • Release : 2021-10-08
  • ISBN : 1621906973
  • Pages : 289 pages

Download or read book The Vital Dead written by Alison Bell and published by Univ. of Tennessee Press. This book was released on 2021-10-08 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What can a cemetery tell us about the social and cultural dynamics of a place and time? Anthropologist Alison Bell suggests that cemeteries participate in the grassroots cultural work of crafting social connections, even as they test the transcendental durability of the deceased person and provide a measure of a culture’s values. In The Vital Dead, Bell applies this framework to the communities of Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley and the cemeteries that have both claimed them and, paradoxically, sustained them. Bell surveys objects left on graves, images and epitaphs on grave markers, and other artifacts of material culture to suggest a landscape of symbols maintaining relationships across the threshold of death. She explores cemetery practice and its transformation over time and largely presents her interpretations as a struggle against alienation. Rich in evocative examples both contemporary and historical, Bell’s analysis stems from fieldwork interviews, archival sources, and recent anthropological theory. The book’s chapters range across cemetery types, focusing on African American burials, the grave sites of institutionalized individuals, and modern community memorials. Ultimately, The Vital Dead is an account of how lives, both famous and forgotten, become transformed and energized through the communities and things they leave behind to produce profound and unexpected narratives of mortality. Bell’s deft storytelling coupled with skill for scholarly analysis make for a fascinating and emotionally moving read. Groundbreaking in its approach, The Vital Dead makes important contributions to cemetery and material culture studies, as well as the fields of anthropology, archaeology, history, geography, and folklore.

Book The Cemetery Monument Hidden in Plain View a SUPPLEMENT

Download or read book The Cemetery Monument Hidden in Plain View a SUPPLEMENT written by Edward G. Mclaughlin and published by . This book was released on 2021-11-03 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Philadelphia National Cemetery contains the remains of over 1,000 black Civil War soldiers and sailors buried in segregated sections of the Cemetery. The Philadelphia National Cemetery is within one mile of the original location of Camp William Penn, the largest training camp for United States Colored Troops (USCT) in the United States. Hundreds buried in these segregated sections were soldiers that died during their training at Camp William Penn or the hospitals that they were sent to. The story of over 1,000 black Civil War soldiers and sailors out of a total burial of over 13,000 buried at the Cemetery is unique in the country. The book was the result of exploring over 25,000 period records. The Philadelphia National Cemetery was one of 14 original national cemeteries established in 1862. Its unique history predates better-known national cemeteries, such as Arlington and Gettysburg. The book attempts to give a 3 to 5 -line history each of the 1,000 black soldiers and sailors, where they were from, their occupation, what they died from and the like.
