Book The Social Studies in Secondary Education

Download or read book The Social Studies in Secondary Education written by Murry R. Nelson and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document contains a reprint of the 1916 "The Social Studies in Secondary Education: A Six-Year Program Adapted Both to the 6-3-3 and the 8-4 Plans of Organization and Report of the Committee on Social Studies of the Commission on the Reorganization of Secondary Education of the National Education Association" widely believed to be the most important document in the history of citizenship education in the United States. It legitimated the term "social studies" to designate formal citizenship education and placed squarely in the field all of those subjects that were believed to contribute to that end. While recognizing the importance of history and the social sciences as contributing to citizenship education, the Committee's report recognized that citizenship education is something more than mastery of separate disciplines. It recognized the study of social problems as a necessary part of the education of citizens, and outlined a content for the social studies that was widely adopted and has remained remarkably unchanged to the present. This book includes annotations by Murry R. Nelson, the editor of the present document, on the 1916 report. Commentaries include: (1) "The Social Contexts of the Committee on Social Studies Report of 1916" (Murry M. Nelson); and (2) "Thomas Jesse Jones--Doing God's Work and the 1916 Report" (Stephen T. Correia). The book also contains a 35-page select annotated bibliography from the ERIC database on social studies reform. The table of contents of the 1915 report on "The Teaching of Community Civics" is included in an appendix. (Author/DK)

Book Engagement in Teaching History

Download or read book Engagement in Teaching History written by Frederick D. Drake and published by Prentice Hall. This book was released on 2009 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can history be taught effectively? Does knowing about the past give meaning to the present and hints to what will happen in the future? This book responds to these questions as it explores the key elements of history instruction-the use of primary sources and narratives, involving students in the historical inquiry through classroom discussions, teaching toward chronological thinking, and the use of historical documents to develop in students a "detective approach" to solving historical problems. Taking a systematic approach to improve students' historical thinking, this book emphasizes certain strategies that will help students know more about the past in ways that will help them in their lives today. The second edition is organized in three parts-Part One describes the theoretical background to teaching history. Part Two, "Planning and Assessment," emphasizes the importance of good organization and lesson planning as well as how to assess students' knowledge, reasoning power, and effective use of communication in the history classroom. Part Three, "Instruction," focuses on the use of primary sources, class discussions, incorporating photographs and paintings, and writing in teaching history. Both the study of history and the teaching of history are multifaceted. The author's hope in writing this book is to engage new and experienced teachers in thoughtful discourse regarding the teaching and learning of history and to develop lifelong learners of history in the 21st century.
