Book The function of Nelly Dean and the Dog in chapter 12 in Wuthering Heights

Download or read book The function of Nelly Dean and the Dog in chapter 12 in Wuthering Heights written by Beate Wilhelm and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2006-12-24 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2004 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 2, University of Freiburg (Englisches Seminar), course: Proseminar I 'The Brontës', language: English, abstract: The happenings in the given excerpt from Wuthering Heights, written by Emily Brontë, bring about an important turn in the action of the novel. It first describes a scene in Catherine Linton`s room at Thrushcross Grange. After a quarrel between Heathcliff, Edgar Linton and Catherine, Catherine drives herself extremely mad to the point where she becomes mentally and physically ill. Nelly Dean is the narrator of the passage, she both observes and is involved in the action herself. As she witnesses how helpless Edgar Linton is – uncertain of what to think or do for his wife, Nelly calls the doctor in the village. As Nelly passes the garden to reach the road, she makes a terrifying discovery: Isabella Linton`s springer Fanny is hung on a bridle hook, almost “at its last gasp” (Brontë 1847: 144). Nelly releases Fanny, wondering who was capable of committing such a crime, and as she sets off to reach the doctor, she hears horses galloping in the distance. Both the dog itself and the action of its hanging have a symbolic meaning. That the dog is a symbol reflecting Isabella Linton and that Fanny`s hanging represents Heathcliff`s diabolical hate and brutality, shall be focused on in my essay through having a closer look at the characters of Isabella Linton and Heathcliff and by interpreting the given excerpt. I will start by analysing the role of Nelly Dean before moving on to symbolism and the function the excerpt has in the frame of the whole story.

Book Trapped in Thought

Download or read book Trapped in Thought written by Eric P. Levy and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 2007-04-17 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eric P. Levy’s book investigates the mentality or attitude of cognitive apprehension expressed in Beckettian texts. Primary areas of concern include how the Beckettian attitude began, what concepts it invents or transforms to sustain its mode of thought, how the mentality wards off factors which would refute or heal it, and, most paradoxical of all, why this mentality ultimately reduces the mind to an estranged source of thought, continuously repudiated by its own awareness. The study uncovers the strategies by which experience is evacuated of all content but that consistent with the attitude registering it.

Book excerpt: In 1801, Lockwood, a wealthy young man from the South of England who is seeking peace and recuperation, rents Thrushcross Grange in Yorkshire. He visits his landlord, Heathcliff, who lives in a remote moorland farmhouse, Wuthering Heights. There Lockwood finds an odd assemblage: Heathcliff who seems to be a gentleman, but his manners are uncouth; the reserved mistress of the house who is in her mid-teens; and a young man who seems to be a member of the family, yet dresses and speaks as if he is a servant. After his visit to the Heights, Lockwood becomes ill, and is confined to his bed for some length of time. The Grange housekeeper, Ellen Dean, who is looking after him, tells him the story of the family at the Heights during his convalescence.

Book Victorian Fiction as a Bildungsroman

Download or read book Victorian Fiction as a Bildungsroman written by Petru Golban and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2019-09-30 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metaphorically speaking, the nineteenth-century English Bildungsroman, dealing with the principle of identity formation, parallels Victorian fiction as a whole, revealing the completion of its own formation, which began in the eighteenth century. Significantly, the most important and popular Victorian novels are Bildungsromane, in which authors construct or rather reconstruct their own life experiences as formative processes. This book shows that the Bildungsroman has a development history, is a specific literary system, and consists of a thematic and narrative pattern. It details the entrance of this newly established fictional tradition into Victorian culture and literature through Carlyle’s threefold literary reception of the novel of formation and its subsequent flourishing and complexity. In this respect, a number of novelistic works are scrutinized, and each faces the question as to whether its thematic and narrative perspectives fit the pattern and shape of the Bildungsroman.

Book In Praise of the Minor Character

Download or read book In Praise of the Minor Character written by Grace Pregent and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2023-10-19 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Minor characters are everywhere in novels. They linger with readers and invite us into the untold aspects of their lives. They fill a text's landscape, bringing depth to its ecosystem, and encourage us to shift our thoughts from textual centers to margins and even to consider the minor elements of our own experiences. Minor characters challenge us to hold oppositional perspectives, rethink interdependencies, and reimagine textual and lived relationships. In many ways, we identify with minor characters, and yet we lack a nuanced way of understanding them. This work is about minor characters and the qualities of "minorness" in Victorian novels. It offers casual readers and scholars alike a method of reading and rereading for minor characters that extends across genres.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The experience a reader undergoes when perusing a new novel parallels the spiritual probing of Bronte's central characters when they meet other characters. The reader's task, like that of a Bronte heroine, is to look beneath the surface. To Bronte, every true work of art, when rightly understood, was a marriage between Jane and Rochester, between the reader and the author. The Adytum of the Heart examines in detail Bronte's commentary on three famous novels--Pride and Prejudice, Vanity Fair, and Wuthering Heights--and relates each to Bronte's own fiction. The book reconstructs the similarities G.H. Lewes must have noted between Jane Eyre and Pride and Prejudice, applying Bronte's critical terminology to pinpoint what she saw as Austen's limitations. Wheat's reading of Bronte's handwritten letters enables her to uncover errors and omissions in printed editions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Returning from Liverpool, Mr. Earnshaw brings with him a dirty, ragged, black-haired child called Heathcliff, and sets into motion a tale of destructive passions. The book’s two locations, the genteel Thrushcross Grange and the wild Wuthering Heights, serve as matching backgrounds to the characters of their occupants, as they struggle to gain the upper hand in marriage and power. All the while, the ghosts of the past seem to drive revenge more than inspire forgiveness. Wuthering Heights was Emily Brontë’s sole published novel before her early death at the age of 30. Published under the pen name of Ellis Bell, a shared surname with the pen names of her sisters, many assumed that such a book could only have been written by a man. Reviewers of the time praised its emotional power but were also shocked at the actions of its characters, and most agreed that it was impossible to put down. After the novel’s original publication in 1847 it was revised into a single volume in 1850, and over time has become a classic of English literature. The story has been reworked into plays, operas, films, TV dramatisations and a ballet, and has inspired many further works of art, music and literature. This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.

Book excerpt: Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2011 im Fachbereich Didaktik für das Fach Englisch - Literatur, Werke, Note: 2,4, Universität Mannheim, Veranstaltung: Proseminar Literatur, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: This term paper deals with Brontë’s unique novel "Wuthering Heights", focusing on the protagonist Catherine Earnshaw and her fragmentarity. However, why does she even have a fragmentary identity and what are the consequences for her own self and as well as in terms of Gothic Fiction? Exactly this question is tried to be answered applying mainly the psychoanalytic approach by Lacan, Freud and Jung and using the hints given by the text’s symbolic value. To fulfil a rational overview, the paper is structured in three main parts: First the conventional symbol of mirror and Lacan’s mirror stage will be analysed as a hint for Catherine’s problematic self. Then the consequences of her crisis of identity will be examined applying the psychoanalytic theories by both Jung and Freud. Lastly, her split self will be analysed in context of Gothic Fiction in general.

Book Wuthering Heights Annotated and Illustrated Edition by Emily Bront

Download or read book Wuthering Heights Annotated and Illustrated Edition by Emily Bront written by Emily Brontë and published by . This book was released on 2021-03-13 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wuthering Heights was Emily Brontë's only novel, and it is considered the fullest expression of her highly individual poetic vision. It contains many Romantic influences: Heathcliff is a very Byronic character, though he lacks the self pity that mars many Byronic characters, and he is deeply attached to the natural world. When the novel was written, the peak of the Romantic age had passed: Emily Brontë lived a very isolated life, and was in some sense behind the times. Wuthering Heights expresses criticisms of social conventions, particularly those surrounding issues of gender: notice that the author distributes "feminine" and "masculine" characteristics without regard to sex. Brontë had difficulties living in society while remaining true to the things she considered important: the ideal of women as delicate beings who avoid physical or mental activity and pursue fashions and flirtations was repugnant to her. Class issues are also important: we are bound to respect Ellen, who is educated but of low class, more than Lockwood.

Download or read book The Significance of Narrators and Narrative Structure in the Works of the Bront s written by Franziska Müller and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2016-12-01 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2016 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,3, Durham University, language: English, abstract: Emily Brontë’s "Wuthering Heights" was written between October 1845 and June 1846 and was first published in 1847 under the pen name Ellis Bell. The narrative structure in "Wuthering Heights" is striking. Interestingly, there is not only one narrator. The main narration, narrated by Nelly Dean, is embedded into Lockwood’s report of events. In addition, Lockwood finds a diary entry from Catherine in the beginning and quotes parts of it, and Nelly includes the contents of a letter written by Isabella, as well as several eyewitness accounts into her narrative. The following essay aims to identify the significance of Lockwood and Nelly as narrators in "Wuthering Heights", and to work out their impacts on the reader. There will first be a general examination of the narrative style of Lockwood and Nelly respectively, and then the effect of these styles on the reader will be examined in more detail. An attempt will then be made to prove that "Wuthering Heights" is in fact a story about exclusion and deficient sympathy between human beings, and that the narrative voices serve to demonstrate and highlight these elements.
