What happens when a hockey player buys his very first home only to discover his beautiful new neighbor isn’t so neighborly? I threw a housewarming party and accidentally blew up my neighbor’s yard. Some hockey players may be known for being rough or partying a lot, but not me. I understood that you have to work hard to make your dreams come true. My dream was to own my own home. I tried to make it up to her, but that didn’t go well either.

Book excerpt: A hot, new romance by USA Today bestselling author Elizabeth Lynx about a fake engagement that turned into something not so fake. What happens when a hockey player and a wedding planner kiss pretending to be in love and that kiss turns into something neither expected? I thought it was a good idea to pretend to be engaged to my sister’s best friend. Before you judge, hear me out. I needed the money. Okay, that sounded really bad, but Harper needed something too, a job. We were both benefiting from the fake engagement. The only problem was as we tried to keep it a secret from our friends and family, the more word got out. That’s the problem with being a famous hockey player and living in a small town. Word spreads fast. I guess I didn’t think that one through. I didn’t think a lot of things through. But I was desperate for the money I could get by pretending to be Harper’s fiancé. My ex-wife took everything I had and trying to raise my son in a tiny one-bedroom apartment wasn’t easy. I may not be proud of the lie I told, but I’d do anything for my little boy. Even pretend to not be in love with my fake-fiancé.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A novel interpretation of architecture, ugliness, and the social consequences of aesthetic judgment When buildings are deemed ugly, what are the consequences? In Ugliness and Judgment, Timothy Hyde considers the role of aesthetic judgment—and its concern for ugliness—in architectural debates and their resulting social effects across three centuries of British architectural history. From eighteenth-century ideas about Stonehenge to Prince Charles’s opinions about the National Gallery, Hyde uncovers a new story of aesthetic judgment, where arguments about architectural ugliness do not pertain solely to buildings or assessments of style, but intrude into other spheres of civil society. Hyde explores how accidental and willful conditions of ugliness—including the gothic revival Houses of Parliament, the brutalist concrete of the South Bank, and the historicist novelty of Number One Poultry—have been debated in parliamentary committees, courtrooms, and public inquiries. He recounts how architects such as Christopher Wren, John Soane, James Stirling, and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe have been summoned by tribunals of aesthetic judgment. With his novel scrutiny of lawsuits for libel, changing paradigms of nuisance law, and conventions of monarchical privilege, he shows how aesthetic judgments have become entangled in wider assessments of art, science, religion, political economy, and the state. Moving beyond superficialities of taste in order to see how architectural improprieties enable architecture to participate in social transformations, Ugliness and Judgment sheds new light on the role of aesthetic measurement in our world.

When he needed the help of his teammate's sister, the sweet-as-pie local veterinarian, to save his dog, he wondered if his secret crush from the past might be more than puppy love. My teammates called me Grumpy Old Man. I understood the grumpy part. It wasn't as if I was the life of the party. But I wasn't old. Geez, I was only thirty-two. Despite the only partly correct nickname, there's two things you needed to know about me. The first, I loved my dog and would do anything for that crazy mutt. The second thing, well, it involved my teammates' sister. The woman he told me to stay away from. What nobody knew was I have had a crush on her for years. Why was I telling you that? My dog was in an accident and the only one who could save him? You guessed it. My secret crush was the local veterinarian. What did I do to thank her? I got her fired. Now my secret crush thought I was a grumpy jerk, too.

This book was released on 2019-01-29 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The eleven contributors to this volume come to grips with the hard realities of controlling war in our modern, interrelated world. All of them deal directly with the role of law in the management of conflict. From Cyril E. Black's introductory chapter, "Conflict Management and World Order," to Richard J. Barnet's concluding chapter, "Toward the Control of International Violence: The Limits and the Possibilities of Law," each expert moves from analysis of some immediate problem of international legal control to the direct application of law to war. The contributors include Tom J. Farer, Rosalyn Higgins, John Norton Moore, Daniel Wiles, William B. Bader, Arnold Kramish, Mason Willrich, W. Michael Reisman, and Harold Feiveson. Conflict Management is the third volume in a large-scale collaborative research project intended to focus the attention of international lawyers and social scientists on the near future of the international legal order. A brochure describing the entire series is available. Cyril E. Black is Duke Professor of Russian History and Director of the Center of International Studies, Princeton University. Richard A.
