Book Negotiating with a Sovereign Quebec

Download or read book Negotiating with a Sovereign Quebec written by Daniel Drache and published by James Lorimer & Company. This book was released on 1992 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in 1992, this book explores the process, problems, and issues related to Quebec's possible accession to sovereign status. The essays in this collection start from the premise that the process of constitutional renewal in Canada had, by 1992, reached an impasse. Since the federal government was unable to make proposals for an asymmetrical federalism acceptable to Quebec, Quebec sovereignty seemed an increasingly likely possibility. The contributors explore the minutiae of the process required to make sovereignty a reality. Written at a time of extreme constitutional stress, the essays in Negotiating with a Sovereign Quebec offer clear-eyed assessments of the possibility of the failure of Canadian federalism.

Book Secession of Quebec and the Future of Canada

Download or read book Secession of Quebec and the Future of Canada written by Robert Young and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1995-01-23 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Young discusses the ways in which Canadians might reconstitute their country after Quebec separates and considers possible political and economic arrangements between Quebec and Canada - the "association" aspect of sovereignty-association - including the breakdown of economic cooperation. Arguing that the long-term future of Canada and the shape of Canada-Quebec relations will depend on how the transition to sovereignty takes place, Young provides a clear and detailed analysis of how the transition is likely to occur. His discussion addresses major issues to be negotiated during the secession - citizenship, national debt, borders, armed forces and public service, commercial and economic relations, currency, First Nations, minority rights, mobility and immigration, and environmental matters. For comparison, Young draws on the experiences of other countries where peaceful secession has occurred, including Czechoslovakia. The second edition includes a new preface and concluding chapter that discuss to what extent the situation has changed since the referendum of 1995.

Book excerpt: Is Quebec Nationalism Just? is an examination of how nationalist aspirations in Quebec relate to liberal principles of freedom, justice, equality, and democracy. Download or read book Debts to Pay written by John F. Conway and published by James Lorimer & Company. This book was released on 2004-04-01 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the resignation of Lucien Bouchard and Jean Charest's resounding win in the recent provincial election, many in English Canada have come to believe that Quebec separatism has finally been defeated. But polls show that sovereignty is still strongly supported by many Quebeckers, and by young people in particular. This new edition of Debts to Pay, a book dealing with Quebec/Canada relations, offers a fresh perspective on the recent changes in Quebec. Saskatchewan-based sociologist and historian John Conway investigates the early days of Jean Charest's government and looks ahead to the effect that Paul Martin's ascension in Ottawa could have on Canada's constitutional struggles. Conway attempts to understand Quebec's aspirations by understanding its history. Through a discussion of relations between Quebec and Canada in the past and present, he explores the division of power between the two societies and provides insights into the source of Quebec's grievances. Debts to Pay offers insight into the bitter and longstanding rift that still remains a threat to the integrity of the Canadian nation.

Book Self Determination in International Law Quebec and Lessons Learned

Download or read book Self Determination in International Law Quebec and Lessons Learned written by Anne Bayefsky and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-11-15 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The case of Quebec within Canada, and the Supreme Court of Canada's case on the legality of secessionist attempts by Quebec, is one example of the tension associated with the relationship between self-determination and a right of secession. The object of the book is to render available to the international community the expert opinions and legal arguments associated with the Supreme Court of Canada's decision on the Quebec Secession Reference. The questions put to the Court in large part concerned international law, leading the parties to the Reference to seek opinions from international law experts around the world as they prepared their arguments which are presented in this book. Self-determination is an idea rooted in human dignity and its meaning and force parallel the emergence of new understandings of the nature of sovereignty and the role of international law in the protection of human rights. The UN Human Rights Committee has identified self-determination as one of the most awkward principles to define because abuse of this right could jeopardize international peace and security. Self-determination, as formulated by the International Court of Justice, requires a free and genuine expression of the will of the peoples concerned. But serious questions remain about the extent of the relationship between self-determination and a right of secession. Does self-determination legitimate internal self-government, association of some kind with another state, or statehood, and in what contexts?
