Book Poland s EU Accession

Download or read book Poland s EU Accession written by Sergiusz Trzeciak and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-01-12 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the process of Poland’s accession negotiations to the European Union between 1998-2003. An empirical study based on Robert Putnam’s two-level game model, it charts the influence and role of key domestic actors and groups on the negotiations especially in three critical, controversial, areas - areas where EU accession threatened to bring about a profound transformation to Polish life - agriculture, with particular emphasis on direct payments and production quotas; the purchase of real estate by foreigners; and the free movement of labour. This book demonstrates the complex interaction between the domestic and international level of negotiations and furthermore, shows how critical this link can be to negotiation outcomes at the international level. It reveals how susceptible Poland’s negotiation process was to domestic pressure, particularly public opinion and interest groups. Drawing heavily on qualitative analysis – such as press releases, news wires, policy documents, as well as quantitative analyses, such as the use of opinion polls, and supported by in-depth, unrestricted interviews with key Polish decision-makers, this book examines the dynamics of policy formation in Poland and shows how this translated into the final conditions of accession.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines in detail the negotiations that led to the entry of Greece into the European Community as its tenth member. While the existing literature tends to confine itself to either a member state's pre-accession trends and prospects, or both, the presnt book provides an analytical and conceptual framework for the study of membership negotiations. It thus contributes not only to an understanding of Greece's relations with the European Community but also to the identification of general negotiating mechanisms underlying the process of EC (and EU) enlargement.

Book Priorities in negotiating Romania s accession to the European Union

Download or read book Priorities in negotiating Romania s accession to the European Union written by Perju Genoveva and published by Babelcube Inc.. This book was released on 2019-12-15 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Priorities in negotiating Romania's accession to the European Union by Prof. ec. Dr. Genoveva-Elena period Priorities in negotiating Romania's accession to the European Union The competitiveness of the Romanian exports has improved both as a result of the restructuring of the economy and the devaluation of the currency. The example of industrial production is illustrative. Production of the processing industry decreased by 8% in 1999 compared to 1998, its share in exports increasing from 30.7% to 35.1% and the export growth rate was 5.9%. The main effect was a reduction of the current account deficit. Overall, the current account deficit fluctuated, representing on average 5.2% of GDP. The budget deficit was difficult to control but it was achieved by applying the European Union's strictures. We can also talk about performance in terms of the level of external debt relative to the level of the external debt of the Union, which is at a higher level than other candidate countries. The labor market was affected by imbalances both in the ratio of the active and inactive population and in the employment rate. The population employed in agriculture owns about 40% of the total employed population. In addition, a large part of the population was affected by the poor (approximately 33.8%) population, especially in rural areas (40.5%). In such an internal and international framework marked by interdependencies with echoes internally from the Union or candidate countries, resolving divergent situations or removing obstacles to assuming obligations and arousing political will, the quality and experience of the negotiator can be considered decisive for further cooperation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on accession processes in the WTO and EU this book explores how accession processes vary from state to state and the impact these variations have. Book European Union Enlargement

Download or read book European Union Enlargement written by Michael Schwarzinger and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-29 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: European Union Enlargement offers an intense and detailed analysis of the almost ten-year process of preparing and negotiating the accession of Eastern, Southeastern, and Central European countries, as well as Mediterranean countries to the European Union. In the end, ten joined in 2004, with two more to follow in 2007. European Union Enlargement was written by two diplomats who were directly involved in that process. Sajdik and Schwarzinger relate their first-hand experience of proceedings that occurred behind closed doors. They detail how the vision of adding some countries gradually developed into the concrete policy intended to enlarge the European Union. A special chapter explains the Accession Process as well as the Union's strategy that prepared the candidate countries, in legal and economic terms, for membership. The authors describe in detail the complex negotiations that occurred from 1998 to 2002. These include activities of EU member states as well as the European Commission with respect to the candidate countries. They further offer a brief analysis of future possibilities of EU-accession by Balkan nations and Turkey. A number of topical chapters deal with particular key issues involved in the process: free movement of workers, agriculture, financing of the enlargement, transport, and nuclear safety. Other chapters deal with the enclave of Kaliningrad as well as the Stability and Association Pact for South East Europe. In addition to providing key information about the process, this volume is also a case study of European policies and diplomatic practice. The enlargement negotiations from 1998 to 2002 were the most complex ones the European Union had ever conducted. In consequence, this work gives insight into the working methods of both the institutions in Brussels and of the representatives of the member states that made them a success. It will be of interest to those concerned with European politics, international organizations, and area studies.
