Book Mobility and Migration Choices

Download or read book Mobility and Migration Choices written by Martin van der Velde and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-03 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The crossing of national state borders is one of the most-discussed issues of contemporary times and it poses many challenges for individual and collective identities. This concerns both short-distance mobility as well as long-distance migration. Choosing to move - or not - across international borders is a complex decision, involving both cognitive and emotional processes. This book tests the approach that three crucial thresholds need to be crossed before mobility occurs; the individual’s mindset about migrating, the choice of destination and perception of crossing borders to that location and the specific routes and spatial trajectories available to get there. Thus both borders and trajectories can act as thresholds to spatial moves. The threshold approach, with its focus on processes affecting whether, when and where to move, aims to understand the decision-making process in all its dimensions, in the hope that this will lead to a better understanding of the ways migrants conceive, perceive and undertake their transnational journeys. This book examines the three constitutive parts discerned in the cross-border mobility decision-making process: people, borders and trajectories and their interrelationships. Illustrated by a global range of case studies, it demonstrates that the relation between the three is not fixed but flexible and that decision-making contains aspects of belonging, instability, security and volatility affecting their mobility or immobility.

Download or read book Human Security written by Benny Teh Cheng Guan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-01-03 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human security is becoming increasingly pronounced in recent years due to changes in the security landscape of world politics. Yet, inter-state relations have continued to dominate security concerns in East Asia. This has, unfortunately, eluded the broader understanding of issues and challenges facing the peoples of East Asia. Home to nations with rapid economic growth and development, East Asia is at the core of what some individuals have termed as the coming Asian Century. Years of economic liberalization and exposure to globalization have permitted the region to achieve high levels of interconnectedness from within and without in unprecedented ways. This has certainly reduced state control and opened up spaces for cross-border human activities. While economic wealth have increased substantially over the years, it has also brought about bigger income disparities, unsustainable safety nets and a surge in social problems from health issues to migratory concerns that threaten the safety and well-being of individuals. Human Security: Securing East Asia’s Future timely examines the fundamental issues causing human insecurities and evaluates the extent of which human security plays a role at the state and regional levels. Covering the different areas of threats to humans and applying case study materials, this volume provides an intellectual mix of perspectives that captures the relationship between people, state and region. This book will be of interest to those studying traditional and non-traditional security/threats, Asian human development and critical policy analysis.

Book Assessment of Complaints Mechanism for Cambodian Migrant Workers

Download or read book Assessment of Complaints Mechanism for Cambodian Migrant Workers written by and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The assessment finds that the legislative framework launched in December 2013 to enable complaints has provided migrant workers a clear avenue and process for lodging complaints and receiving compensation. The assessment finds that there has been considerable use of the complaints mechanism by migrant workers and that staff from the Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training (MOLVT), Provincial Departments of Labour and Vocational Training (PDOLVT), Migrant Worker Resource Centres (MRCs), trade unions and service providers have demonstrated strong commitment to pursuing migrant workers' right to justice through the dispute resolution process. The assessment also reveals inconsistencies in the implementation of these processes, and provides recommendations to address these gaps. The International Labour Organization (ILO) Tripartite Action to Protect Migrant Workers within and from the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS TRIANGLE project) has supported labour migration governance in Cambodia through improving policy legislation, capacity building of stakeholders, and support to migrant workers, including in the receipt and resolution of complaints. This assessment of the complaints mechanism will contribute to improving migration governance in Cambodia by initiating analysis and beginning an evidenced-based discussion on the complaints process with stakeholders.

Book A Critical Reflection on Cambodian Women s Labour Migration in Southeast Asia

Download or read book A Critical Reflection on Cambodian Women s Labour Migration in Southeast Asia written by Sopheap Suong and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This coursework thesis aims at understanding the situation of Cambodian female labour migrants working in three destination countries in Southeast Asia, namely Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore, and how Cambodian female migration fits into the bigger picture of global economies and global politics. This is achieved through the use of a range of feminist perspectives, especially Marxist feminism, to analyse and provide critical reflection of Cambodian women's labour migration in the context of global capitalism. The analysis is guided by the literature on global capitalism and international migration. The findings reveal that the situation of Cambodian female labour migrants is best understood as part of the system of global capitalism. The Cambodian government can also be understood in this context; a large part of this, serving the needs of global capital as much as serving any concept of 'national good'. Caught in this clash are female labour migrants, often finding themselves in dire circumstances. This is a contentious situation with Cambodian female labour migrants resisting such exploitation whenever they can in order to be free from exploitation and improve their working conditions. Action has also been taken by civil society organisations (CSOs) to advocate for female migrant workers' rights and benefits. The agency of female labour migrants and the actions taken by CSOs and other actors have put pressure on the Cambodian government to improve its labour migration policies and practices.
