Book Roots of Change

Download or read book Roots of Change written by Mary Ridder and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do accomplished writers (and grown-ups) like Ron Carlson, Rick Bass, and Michael Chabon (to name but a few of those represented here) still obsess over their baseball days? What is it about this green game of suspense that not only moves us but can also move us to flights of lyrical writing? In Scoring from Second: Writers on Baseball some of the literary lights of our day answer these questions with essays, reminiscences, and meditations on the sport that is America's game but also a deeply personal experience for player, observer, and fan alike.

Book The History of Nebraska Law

Download or read book The History of Nebraska Law written by Alan G. Gless and published by Ohio University Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the aftermath of the Civil War, legislators in the Nebraska Territory grappled with the responsibility of forming a state government as well as with the larger issues of reconstructing the Union, protecting civil rights, and redefining federal-state relations. In the years that followed, Nebraskans coped with regional and national economic collapses. Nebraska women struggled for full recognition in the legal profession. Meyer v. Nebraska, a case involving a teacher in a one-room rural Nebraska schoolhouse, changed the course of American constitutional doctrine and remains one of the cornerstones of civil liberties law. And Roscoe Pound, a boy from Lincoln, went on to become one of the nation's great legal philosophers. Nebraska holds a prominent position in the field of Native American legal history, and the state's original inhabitants have been at the center of many significant developments in federal Indian policy. Nebraska Indian legal history is replete with stories of failure and success, heartache and triumph, hardship and hope. These stories are more than a mere record of the past, of treaties broken or trials won -- they are reminders of the ongoing and sometimes tense relations among the many peoples and nations that make up the heartland. Much of Nebraska law reflects mainstream American law, yet Nebraskans also have been open to experiment and innovation. The state revamped the legislative process by establishing the nation's only unicameral legislature and pioneered public employment collective bargaining and dispute resolution through its industrial relations commission and its relaxation of strict separation of powers. These seemingly contradictory trends, however, are but differing expressions of a single underlying principle inscribed in the state's motto: "Equality Before the Law."

Book New Roots for Agriculture

    Book Details:
  • Author : Wes Jackson
  • Publisher : U of Nebraska Press
  • Release : 1980-01-01
  • ISBN : 9780803275621
  • Pages : 172 pages

Download or read book New Roots for Agriculture written by Wes Jackson and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 1980-01-01 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The plowshare may well have destroyed more options for future generations than the sword," writes Wes Jackson in a review of practices that have brought U.S. agriculture to the edge of disaster. Tillage has hastened the erosion of irreplaceable topsoil everywhere and a technology based on fossil fuels has increased yields for short-term profits, leaving crops ever more vulnerable to diseases, pests, and droughts. Such, says Jackson, is "the failure of success." As high-technology agriculture becomes more wasteful and expensive, more farmers are being forced off the land or into bankruptcy. ø Jackson's major solution calls for the development of plant combinations that yield food while holding the soil and re-newing its nutrients without plowing or applying fossil-fuel-based fertilizers or pesticides. His new way of raising crops, by working with the soil's natural systems, would keep the world's bread-basket producing perpetually.

Download or read book Nebraska Roots written by Leah Jesse Lambert and published by . This book was released on 2023-05-31 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Nebraska Roots, Leah Lambert presents the story of her own evolution from sheltered child to self-aware young woman. Throughout the book, Lambert weaves in historical references along with some ghostly encounters. She depicts a childhood in the 1950s where her education happened in a one-room schoolhouse and children were affected by news reports about spies, the Cold War, and serial killers-and they responded in unique ways. In high school, Lambert encountered classmates who did little to hide their blatant bigotry, teachers who openly promoted their political views, and counselors whose prejudices prevented them from supporting student goals. As a college student at the University of Nebraska in the 1960s, she experienced a variety of contrasting cultures, from rabid support of college football, to the emergence of women's issues, racial awareness, and a rising anti-war movement. After years of anti-war protests and growing feminism, two divergent worlds collide when Lambert falls in love with an Army officer. Poignant and honest, Nebraska Roots narrates an eventful life spanning decades of unprecedented change.

Book Sons of the River

Download or read book Sons of the River written by Norm Bomer and published by Canon Press & Book Service. This book was released on 2000 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Sons of the River is a stunning introduction to the psychological meaning of rural Nebraska. Every geography emanates from within its own peculiar power of place. The essence of the Elkhorn Valley in northeastern Nebraska is captured in this book. Rooted in the memory of a young boy, Sons of the River recounts the founding, growth and decline of Ewing in the Elkhorn Valley. But it's not so much a history as an elegiac prose poem, for farm and ranch life in the Sand Hills of Nebraska has long lost its rustic charm. This book is more than a memoir. Like all art, it halts the ravages of time. A book not just to be read but savored." -James Sire, author of The Universe Next Door and Habits of the Mind "Through the heartbreak of unforeseen change, Norm Bomer reminds us of the rich bonds of simple community and divine care. Sons of the River is a moving and rewarding read." -Kay Orr, former Governor of Nebraska "Norm Bomer expertly portrays the frail weaknesses of real people, and then shows their redemption through God's grace. The book arouses a reader's own childhood memories, with personal triumphs and tragedies, and encourages one to look forward with hope." -Jack M. Wells, Montana State Senator "Books about family roots are legion. But here is one done with literary skill and with biblical reflection on covenant faithfulness, disobedience, and creation order and beauty. You will find it delightful and inspiring reading." -Dr. John White, President, Geneva College "Bomer is part of a cadre of American writers who are giving glowing biographies to some of the country's most forbidding territory. . . . Bomer details how landscape is destiny." -Julia Duin, The Washington Times Norm Bomer is Senior Editor of God's World Publications. He and his artist wife, Carol, live in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, which, up close, turn out to be rather greyish brown. They have two children.

Excerpt: ...before his death, Mrs. Randolph, one of the passengers in the stage coach that day, placed upon his finger a beautiful gold ring with these words engraved upon it: E. Umphry, G. C. Randolph and Hattie P. Randolph to ROBERT EMERY in remembrance of what we owe to his cool conduct and good driving on Tuesday, August 9, 1864. A STAGE COACH HERO OF THE LITTLE BLUE 141 And, looking at the ring, this stage coach hero of the Little Blue gave up the lines at the end of his last drive. QUESTIONS 1. Have you ever seen a stage coach? Have you ridden in one? 2. In what respects is a stage coach journey better fun than a journey by railroad? 3. Was Robert Emery just the kind of a man to drive a stage coach? Why? 4. What are such men as Robert Emery doing to-day? THE PRAIRIE FIRE ALL Nebraska was one great field of wild grass in the early days. A few trees grew along the streams and in the ravines. All the rest was grass. In the heat of summer the short grass dried on its roots. When the frosts of early fall came the tall, green grasses were killed. Then the autumn winds blew and the grass everywhere was dead and very dry. Prairie fires burned in this great ocean of dry grass every fall and spring. Indians or white hunters or campers started them. Once started a fire spread on and on until a rain fell or until it reached a river too wide for it to jump. One of the great dangers to the early settlers was from the prairie fire. To protect their homes and stacks from its ravages they broke a narrow strip of sod around them, then, at some distance inside of that, another narrow strip and burned the grass between. This was called a "fireguard." It was usually from four to eight rods wide. It would stop any common fire and keep the settler's house...
