Download or read book On the Edge of Empire written by Chantal Esquivias and published by British Archaeological Reports Oxford Limited. This book was released on 2002 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary objective of this research, conducted in the area of Chacalapan, southern Veracruz, Mexico, was to address the social and political development of the region during the Classic and Postclassic periods (AD 300-1520). One of the main goals was to study the relations between Chacalapan and the Mexica Empire during Late Postclassic times (AD 1400-1520), and to define the extent of imperial control in these borderlands. Although Early Colonial period documents attest to native population of the area at the time of Spanish contact ca. 1522, no appreciable Postclassic occupation was discovered archaeologically. There is, however, ample archaeological evidence for extensive occupation during the earlier Classic period, which implies a regional population decrease during the Postclassic. As a result, this study is a hybrid of ethnohistorical research relevant to the Postclassic period and archaeological research pertaining to the Classic period.

Book Seeing Into the Earth

Download or read book Seeing Into the Earth written by National Research Council (U.S.). Board on Earth Sciences and Resources and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Just below our feet is an environment that supports our infrastructure, yields water, provides for agriculture, and receives our waste. Our capacity to describe, or characterize, this environment is crucial to the solution of many resource, environmental, and engineering problems. And just as medical imaging technologies have reduced the need for exploratory surgeries, a variety of technologies hold the promise for rapid, relatively inexpensive noninvasive characterization of the Earth's subsurface. Seeing into the Earth examines why noninvasive characterization is important and how improved methods can be developed and disseminated. Looking at the issues from both the commercial and public perspectives, the volume makes recommendations for linking characterization and cost savings, closing the gap between the state of science and the state of the practice, and helping practitioners make the best use of the best methods. The book provides background on: The role of noninvasive subsurface characterization in contaminant cleanup, resource management, civil engineering, and other areas. The physical, chemical, biological, and geological properties that are characterized. Methods of characterization and prospects for technological improvement. Certain to be important for earth scientists and engineers alike, this book is also accessible to interested lay readers.

Book Advances in Geophysical Methods Applied to Forensic Investigations

Download or read book Advances in Geophysical Methods Applied to Forensic Investigations written by Giovanni Leucci and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-05-07 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a general introduction to the most important geophysical exploration methods and their application to forensic sciences. It describes physical principles, campaign procedures and processing, as well as interpretation techniques, while also highlighting new acquisition and data analysis procedures. A large section of the book is devoted to applications, from measurements to the interpretation of data. Further, the book shows how to design and perform a forensic survey, and offers guidance on selecting the best method for the problem at hand, and on selecting the best type of data acquisition and processing. Written in straightforward language and chiefly intended as an introductory text for students in several scientific fields, the book also offers a useful guide for specialists who want to expand their expertise in this fascinating discipline.
