Book excerpt: This Final Technical Report presents the results of a feasibility investigation of a technique for calculating the far-field radar cross section of an object based upon measurements made in the near-field of the object. This technique is an extension of existing planar near-field antenna measurement technology, and is capable of measuring monostatic radar cross section and bistatic radar cross section at both narrow and wide angles. Included are the detailed formulation of the theory of near-field planar bistatic radar cross section measurement, and discussion of details of the mechanical scanner and software implementation. The comparison of measurement with predictions is presented; the agreement is excellent, and suggests that a larger-scale demonstration would be appropriate. Also included are concepts for reducing the amount of data required for reconstructing radar cross section, and a discussion of limitations of this method of radar cross-section measurement. Specific recommendations are presented for technology development areas that should be pursued to mature this measurement technique into a viable, operational technology. Among those areas are calibration, data handling, computational optimization, data analysis, operational considerations, and additional theoretical development.

A street-sized walk, appropriately called the Diag, runs diagonally across this square, connecting its southeast and northwest corners. In 1904 a new engineering building was either started or finished (I do not remember which) to house classrooms. When another engineering building was built on the expanded campus across the street from it many years later, the old building came to be known as West Engine, to distinguish it from the new East Engine. Old West Engine is (or maybe by now, was) a four-story, L-shaped structure that stood at the southeast corner of the original campus. It was built with an arch in it to straddle the Diag at the apex of the L. You walked over the Engineering Arch to get from one leg of the L to the other if you were inside the building, and you walked under it when you entered the campus from the southeast corner. Affixed to the masonry wall of the arch was a plaque I often noted in passing. It bore a quote attributed to Horace Greeley (1811-1872), who I did not know at the time was the founder, editor, and publisher of the New York Tribune. It said, simply, Young man, when theory and practice differ, use your horse sense. The suggestion seems worthy of an exclamation point instead of a period, but I do not remember if it had one.

A technique using one parabolic reflector and a planar scanning probe antenna is analyzed. The field pattern in the test zone is computed using a spatial array of signal sources. It achieved an illumination pattern with 1 dB amplitude and 15 degree phase ripple over the target zone. The required scan plane size is found to be proportional to the size of the desired test target. Book excerpt: This research examined the applicability of the monostatic-bistatic equivalence theorem (MBET) and associated extensions in determining the extent to which correlation exists between monostatic and bistatic data for both the near and far-field. A secondary objective was to determine whether reliable bistatic near-field radar cross section (RCS) data could be collected on a range originally designed to take monostatic far-field measurements. Dr. David Falconer developed two extensions of the MBET in an effort to estimate the bistatic RCS pattern in both the near and far-field by measuring the monostatic RCS pattern at one-half the bistatic angle, at a reduced frequency, and, for the near-field case, at an adjusted target-to-receiver separation range. The pattern representation and accuracy of these two extensions were examined by measuring the RCS of an ogive, a circular flat plate, and two circular cylinders of different lengths. Theses.

Book excerpt: This research addresses some phenomenological aspects of bistatic scattering from a complex object with an emphasis on specular, shadowing, dihedral, and cavity effects. Five targets are investigated for their simplicity and ability to highlight certain scattering phenomena. Direct measurements of scattered electromagnetic energy and simulation data is gathered for a frequency bandwidth of 6-18 GHz. Both ray tracing and scattering center approaches are used to describe the bistatic mechanisms. An appraisal of the effectiveness and utility of the monostatic-to-bistatic equivalence theorems (Kell's and Crispin's) and several commercial scattering prediction codes is also accomplished. Simulation data is generated from two different electromagnetic scattering prediction codes, Xpatch and FISC. Xpatch is a physical optics (PO) based code while FISC is a more rigorous method of moments (MOM) based tool. This data is utilized to achieve three objectives: (1) study Kell's and Crispin's monostatic-to-bistatic equivalence theorems (MBET) for a complex object through theoretical derivations and comparison of measured and simulated data sets, (2) evaluate the performance of Xpatch and FISC through direct comparisons to measured data, and (3) gain insight into the bistatic scattering phenomenology while extracting appropriate rules-of-thumb for bistatic scattering predictions. These rules of thumb are proposed to help guide the reader in evaluating the bistatic RCS of complex shapes in general.

Book excerpt: This research effort examined the feasibility of performing bistatic radar cross section (RCS) measurements in the AFIT anechoic chamber. The capability was established to measure the bistatic RCS of a target versus frequency and versus target azimuth angle. In either case, one of three bistatic angles (angle between transmit and receive antennas) is available: 45 degrees, 90 degrees, and 135 degrees. Accurate bistatic RCS measurements were obtained using a CW radar and utilizing background subtraction, bistatic calibration, and software range gating. Simple targets were selected for validation purposes since their bistatic RCS could be predicted. These consisted of spheres and flat plates (square, triangle, and five sided). Several computer codes were utilized for system validation. Two codes based on the Uniform Theory of Diffraction were used to predict the scattering from the flat plates. A program using a Mie series solution provided the exact scattering from the flat plates. A program using a Mie series solution provided the exact scattering for the spheres, which were used for both RCS predictions and system calibrations.

Book excerpt: Recent advances in signal processing and remote sensing have highlighted the importance of bistatic radar systems for the purposes of environmental monitoring, surveillance, and tracking radar. The calibration of such systems has been problematic-much more so than similar monostatic systems, primarily as a result of the lack of reference objects suitable for calibrating at any given bistatic angle. This research deals with the problems of calibrating full-polarimetric laboratory-environment bistatic radar systems, including the lack of suitable calibration targets and procedures, and operational considerations such as alignment and mounting. Several popular bistatic calibration techniques are classified, evaluated, and comparisons are made between the relative merits of various calibration objects. The analysis addresses sensitivity to target alignment error, sensitivity to polarization impurity, and ease of implementation. Both theoretical concepts and practical considerations are discussed, based on measurements accomplished at the European Microwave Signature Laboratory (EMSL) of the Joint Research Center (JRC) in Ispra, Italy. Significant gains in co-polarized channel accuracy and cross- polarization purity are realized with calibrations that utilize the complete system distortion model and these conclusions are discussed in detail.
