Nine Nights of the Goddess explores the festival of Navarātri—alternatively called Navarātra, Mahānavamī, Durgā Pūjā, Dasarā, and/or Dassain—which lasts for nine nights and ends with a celebration called Vijayadaśamī, or "the tenth (day) of victory." Celebrated in both massive public venues and in small, private domestic spaces, Navarātri is one of the most important and ubiquitous festivals in South Asia and wherever South Asians have settled. These festivals share many elements, including the goddess, royal power, the killing of demons, and the worship of young girls and married women, but their interpretation and performance vary widely. In many cultural and historical contexts, including contemporary India, women's everyday lives tend to revolve heavily around domestic and interpersonal concerns, especially care for children, the home, husbands, and other relatives. I have dealt with great Hindu epics like the Mahabharata and Ramayana and learned a great deal about the human condition and why it is as it is. To conclude, writing this book has been a revelation to me about my own spirituality and I am sure it will be an interesting read for people who are invested in Sanatan Dharma which is the correct terminology for Hinduism.

Dharma, the righteous path explained in the Vedas, the Bhagavad Gita, and then the Ten Commandments, is grossly misunderstood, misinterpreted, and distorted. They taught sacrifice and virtues, and order that will make life and the universe possible. Even nature was not spared. “Selfishness” has become the order of the day. What is the view of the young?
