Book Celestial Navigation

Download or read book Celestial Navigation written by Dominique F. Prinet and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2014-07-17 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This manual has grown out of all the courses given by Dominique Prinet, a certified Instructor-Evaluator for Sail Canada who has been teaching celestial navigation since 2000. It has benefitted from the thoughtful contributions of over 100 students. The aim of Celestial Navigation is to give a sufficient grounding in the subject to determine position at sea using a sextant for fixes on the sun, moon, stars and planets. Furthermore, the material presented will prepare a reader who wishes to pursue a Celestial Navigation Certificate through self-study. The subject requires some comfort with the basic concepts of navigation, but the prospective navigator only needs to know how to add and subtract either times or angles. Lucid and well-paced, Celestial Navigation starts with fundamentals and definitions which ensure that a motivated student need not bring anything more to the table than his or her willingness to master the subject. Richly illustrated, it includes a chapter with more than forty pages of review exercises covering all topics. The cleverness of many of the concepts, explained here, will bring about great intellectual joy and satisfaction. Whether you are a recreational sailor or an individual pursuing professional certification as a navigator, Celestial Navigation will teach you what you need to know.

Book Mathematics for the Mariner

Download or read book Mathematics for the Mariner written by Dennis A. J. Morey and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2004-12 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whereas numerous tomes of comprehensive studies of navigation and related subjects are readily available for the professional navigator, there is dearth of publications suitable for the amateur navigator in a "how-to" form. Furthermore, the appearance of relatively inexpensive electronic devices, such as the GPS, has lured would-be navigators away from the traditional methods of navigation, in spite of the warnings offered by the companies producing these devices. Thus they overlook the "sine qua non" of good navigation, the determination of the current velocity, that is the set and drift. Once determined this component of the navigational triangle makes precise navigation a snap, whereas without it there is only uncertainty. Most students are turned off by the need to acquire a practical application of basic formulae employing basic trigonometry and later spherical trigonometry, methods which have evolved over the centuries from the beginning of the Age of Exploration in the early 1400's to modern days. In this text we develop the knowledge and application of these mathematical processes in such a way as to reassure the student that these techniques are not beyond his capabilities.

This book was released on 2017-12-18 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the completely NEW EDITION of The American Practical Navigator Vol 2. "I am honored to welcome you to the 2017 edition of Publication No. 9, The American Practical Navigator, or as most mariners refer to it, "Bowditch." As a young Surface Warfare Officer serving in my first ship, I quickly learned Bowditch should be my first resource for all things related to navigation, oceanography and meteorology. I never imagined that 25 years later, I would be privileged to lead the team entrusted with updating this incredible document. One can hardly imagine the time, effort, and pressure involved in undertaking such a task--this is Bowditch, after all. None of us alone can equal the talent, experience and skill of Nathaniel Bowditch, as expressed in his first edition of 1802. As a result, this edition is the outcome of countless hours of hard work by many dedicated, passionate, and skilled colleagues from a variety of disciplines. And it was this team of scientific and operational navigation experts, led by Dr. Jerry Clifford, which has created this contemporary edition that stands ready to address the challenges faced by today's navigators and mariners. Please take the time to read the long list of contributors to this edition, I know you will be impressed by the depth and quality of our team. Since the last edition, there have been huge advancements in positioning methodologies and navigation systems. In some cases, what was old is new again, so we focused considerable effort into improving the celestial navigation and piloting chapters. Hand-plotting latent fixes on paper charts has been overtaken by Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems that continuously tell you where you are, provide warnings when standing into danger, and display radar and Automatic Identification System information to heighten situational awareness. Older graphics have been replaced by newer, higher resolution images to better illustrate the purpose of the text. Needless to say, we are justifiably proud of this 2017 edition and equally honored to continue such a noteworthy legacy of the navigational expertise first introduced by Nathaniel Bowditch 215 years ago. Wherever you may sail, I trust this fine resource will assure your safe passage. I wish you all fair winds and following seas. CAPT Brian D. Book Navigation Workbook 1210 Tr For Power Driven and Sailing Vessels

Download or read book Navigation Workbook 1210 Tr For Power Driven and Sailing Vessels written by David Burch and published by . This book was released on 2014-07-31 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides over 700 exercises with answers covering all aspects of small-craft navigation. These are practical problems that all navigators should know how to solve. Topics include: Piloting, Chart reading and plotting, Voyage planning, Dead reckoning, Compass use, Waypoint selection, Special publications, Rules of the road, Route design, Lights and buoys, Tides and currents, Electronic fixes, Depth sounding navigation The level of the exercises is comparable to that used in the USCG 100-Ton masters exam, which in turn is about the same used in the navigation certification programs of US Sailing, ASA, CYA and RYA. These practice problems are, however, designed to be practical and instructive, not just training exercises for certification exams. This Workbook is used by several navigation schools around the country. Selections are provided from each of these special publications along with exercises to insure their full use is mastered: NOAA Tide Tables, NOAA Current Tables, US Coast Pilot, USCG Light List, USCG Notices to Mariners, NOAA Chart Catalog The exercises that require a chart use nautical training chart No. 1210 Tr, available in print at reduced price from NOAA chart dealers and other outlets listed in the Appendix. You can also work the chart problems with an electronic chart (Raster Navigation Chart, RNC) number 1210 Tr. This custom echart is available as a download from www.starpath.com/1210Tr. The echart can be viewed by any of several free echart viewer programs. Sources for free echart viewers and guidelines for their use are included in the Appendix. You can also use any full echart navigation program of your choice. We encourage navigators to solve the chart problems with both traditional paper plotting as well as electronically, using route tools, electronic bearing lines, and range rings.

Book Stark Tables For Clearing the Lunar Distance and Finding Universal Time by Sextant Observation Including a Convenient Way to Sharpe

Download or read book Stark Tables For Clearing the Lunar Distance and Finding Universal Time by Sextant Observation Including a Convenient Way to Sharpe written by Bruce Stark and published by Starpath Publications. This book was released on 2010-05 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Celestial navigation is a way to find your latitude and longitude on earth using a sextant to measure the angular heights of celestial bodies above the horizon. It has been used by mariners at sea and explorers on land for three hundred years, and it is still used today as a dependable backup to modern electronic navigation. Routine celestial navigation relies upon accurate time (Universal Time) to find the longitude of a position (latitude does not require time). Advanced celestial navigators can find longitude without knowing the time using a technique called Lunar Distance. In this technique, the sextant is used to measure the angular (diagonal) distance between the moon and another celestial body. Since this distance slowly changes as the moon moves eastward though the stars, it can be used to find the time of day that is needed to complete the longitude determination. The process of finding longitude from lunar distance, however, requires special tables that have not been published in the Nautical Almanac or other sources since the early 1900s. Although software solutions have been available, most advanced celestial navigators are very grateful to navigation historian Bruce Stark for creating these printed tables dedicated to this task. They have been used and tested by mariners for more than 15 years and are praised by experts for their ingenuity and ease of use in solving this complex navigation exercise-which all agree is the hallmark of an expert celestial navigator. With The Stark Tables in your nav station, you no longer have to fear losing power to your electronic navigation aids, nor are you dependent on accurate time from any official broadcast. Besides their practical use in back up navigation, historians have used these tables for years to interpret the logbooks of Lewis and Clark, David Thompson, James Cook, Matthew Flinders, George Vancouver, Nathaniel Bowditch, and other notable explorers and sea captains. "It is remarkable in this day when the very survival of celestial navigation seems in question, that an individual should suddenly appear on the scene and present to the world such a brilliant piece of work. Stark has rendered a great service to the celestial navigation community." - Robert Eno, The Navigator's Newsletter "Captain Cook would have relished using these tables, had they been available to him then." - George Huxtable, FRIN
