Download or read book Navigation Conditions at Lock and Dam No 4 Arkansas River written by John J. Franco and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lock and Dam No. 4 will consist of a 110- by 600-ft lock and a 1190-ft long, gated, nonnavigable dam. A 1:120-scale fixed-bed model, reproducing 5.2 miles of the Arkansas River, was used to: (a) demonstrate flow conditions in lock approaches and in vicinity of Rob Roy Bridge (1.3 miles above lock); (b) determine effect of various guard wall designs on forces affecting tows in upper lock approach; (c) determine optimum location of harbor and dock, and mooring facilities; (d) measure distribution of different flows throughout the model; and (e) furnish information for use in developing modifications of the approaches and structures to improve navigation conditions. Tests were concerned with study of flow patterns, measurement of velocities in lock approaches, and behavior of a model tow on entering and leaving the locks and navigating through Rob Roy Bridge under flows ranging from 100,000 to 350,000 cfs. Book Navigation and Sedimentation Conditions at Typical Lock and Dam Arkansas River Arkansas and Oklahoma

Download or read book Navigation and Sedimentation Conditions at Typical Lock and Dam Arkansas River Arkansas and Oklahoma written by J. J. Franco and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As part of the studies for development of a navigable waterway from the Mississippi River to the general area of Tulsa, Oklahoma, a movable-bed, distorted scale model of a typical 5-mile reach of the Arkansas River was used to study problems involved in the location, design, and operation of a lock and dam on an Arkansas River bend. Principal conclusion were: (a) The lock and dam should be placed as far downstream of the point of the convex bar as possible to minimize crosscurrents and scouring in the upper approach. (b) Ports will be required in the upper guard wall of the lock to reduce the intensity of the crosscurrents near the end of the guard wall. (c) Shoaling in the lower lock approach, which would tend to be heavy, could be reduced by a wing wall at the end of the lower guard wall. (d) There is no appreciable difference between a stepped-sill and a level-sill dam insofar as the movement of sediment is concerned. (Author).

Book Navigation Conditions in Fort Smith Reach Arkansas River

Download or read book Navigation Conditions in Fort Smith Reach Arkansas River written by John J. Franco and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fort Smith reach of the Arkansas River, located in the Lock and Dam No. 13 pool, includes the mouth of the Poteau River and is crossed by two bridges 850 ft apart. An undistorted 1:120-scale, semifixed-bed model reproducing approximately 4 miles of the Arkansas River and adjacent overbank and the lower 2 miles of the Poteau River was used to determine the regulating structures and modifications required to develop a channel of project dimensions, and the modifications required to the existing bridges to provide satisfactory navigation conditions through the reach.
